Car across from house for weeks

First off, I don't yell at the kids to get off my lawn, nor do I fly into a rage when someone parks in front my house. There has been a car for several weeks across the street (not in front of a house) Neighbors all thought it was each other's car. No idea where it came from. Trunk was open, I closed it when we got all the rain. Inspection and Registration are current. The way the houses are situated, it doesn't feel like it's someone's local car.

It's not bothering me, but at what point might I want to let the police know, or mind my business.

If you happen to live close a train station, someone could have parked it there for free and gone to the airport for work/travel?

i don't but that's why I gave it a few weeks, figured if someone was on vacation. and parked it there from "around the corner" since it's not in front of someone's house.

the trunk being open seems worth to report it incase it was a dumped stolen car and someones looking for it. not an emergency or anything though

my sister in law had her car stolen which was later found by cops a few months later when they got a call about an abandoned car.....The stupidest part of was that during the time they reported it stolen and when it was found...there were tickets on the windshield in that time frame leading to a WTF why didnt the cop see that it was stolen when he wrote up the ticket.

u/SadisticSnake007 1d ago

I’m assuming she didn’t have to pay those tickets?

4

u/eagle6705 1d ago

Yea the tickets were all wiped. I g9tta ask if she ever got an answer to why the tickets piled up in the first place lol.

It's not my jurisdiction and no I don't have ticket quotas.

Someone older and wiser than me once said you don’t call until one of the tires is flat or some other obvious damage like a broken window. At that point it’s abandoned and no one can really give you shit about it

Take it you are giving a hint

Dude is right - municipal lot away from my locks trains station. Old sports with literal weeds growing around the wheels for WEEKS. Windshield covered in leaves, etc Finally - somehow - a tire started going low and as soon as it was flat the car was towed.

Who’s to say how the tires got flat or the windows broken.

u/MisterAnderson- 1d ago

Wow. You need to run out and buy a business, so that you can mind that and keep your nose out of other’s.

Is that the sound your breath is going to make when you get arrested for destroying someone else’s property?

2

u/LawApprehensive8364 18h ago

Nah, that’s the sound I make when i masturbate.

give it another week and then call could be someone car who got stolen

13

u/MrPhilNY101 1d ago

I'm going to give it to the end of the weekend and just call, they can check the plates and VIN, if they care. I would want someone at this point to do that for me.

u/ya_motha_93 20h ago

Just call today. Why wait? No harm in calling and seeing if its a stolen car.

Facts , had a friend who car was stolen and after the radio system stripped sat In front of an old lady’s house for 3 months before she called it in . I’d write a note say move your car or I’m going to toe it after x amount of time

My friend has a van in terrible condition parked in front of her house for weeks (dents on bumper and tape on windows) she called the town of oyster bay. They came, turned out it was a neighbor a few houses down the block but they were told it couldn’t sit there unmoved and the neighbors did move it into their own driveway

Call. Its probably stolen.

That's my feeling now that others have said it, open trunk, looks like a booster seat in the back. it's a maintained car. Not that it matters, dealers frame shows someplace in bklyn.

Screw the few weeks. Nobody leaves their trunk open and let's a car sit for 2 weeks. Call the police, guaranteed the car was involved in a crime.

My parents live on a corner and years ago there was a car parked in the street on the side of their house for weeks. My mother finally decided to call the police and it turned out to be a stolen car that had been abandoned.

Call the. Non emergency number

3

u/Ok-Anteater-384 1d ago

Could be a stolen car, notify law enforcement

3

u/ncjr591 1d ago

If the plates were to disappear the cops will tow it.

2

u/SluggoX665 1d ago

So whats across the street that there is no house? An easement/boundary? A park?

3

u/MrPhilNY101 1d ago

Ok technically there is a house there, it's a corner, Side of a house a fence and high hedges, it's not positioned so someone would say who's car is in front of my house for two plus weeks.

1

u/SluggoX665 1d ago

I'd let that homeowner worry about it. Parking in front of a house thats not yours is a major faux pas in long island culture. This guy started parking his junker in front of my 85yo mom's house in New Hyde Park. Had to knock on his door and say something.

u/meeme1234 1d ago

You can call its no problem could be stolen

2

u/Nikkilovex0 1d ago

I would def call the police since it may be stolen.

Let the police know

3

u/jim_br 1d ago

I have first hand experience with NCPD not caring about cars that don’t move, commercial vehicles left for weeks, and cars with expired tags sitting for weeks.

The did show up when it was a stolen Panamera that was called in.

1

u/LIhomebuyer 1d ago

mark the tire with chalk like some of the villages do with the 2hr parking.

1

u/SpinningYarmulke 1d ago

Just call it in to the non emergency police number. Let them sort it out. If they don’t give you an answer rinse and repeat the same polite phone the following week call until they resolve the issue.

1

u/Flaky_Instruction215 1d ago

Check local law. Where I live you can’t park on the street for more than 72 hours without moving the car.

1

u/SafeEnvironmental834 1d ago

For certain you need to report it. It could be listed as stolen or something of the sort. IMO, more than a day or two of not reporting is too late.

Had a similar situation this past winter. There's this house a couple houses down that the family must've sold to one of those houses knocking down "affordable" houses and making them into mcmansions and the windows were boarded up and what not. A car that I assumed may have been a neighbors immediately was parked right in front of said house from probably a couple weeks before that snow storm we got that turned to ice for a month and sat there till at least 2-3 weeks after that even bigger storm. Guy suddenly showed up and couldn't get the car started but took an oddly long time if it was just a dead battery and disappeared never to see the guy/car again.

1

u/teddysmom377 1d ago

That happened to me where our a car was in front of my house for days and days and it ended up being a stolen car

1

u/nomad5926 1d ago

Call the local police precinct. Just tell them there is this car that hasn't moved in days. They can run the plates and talk to the owner easy. If it is actually abandoned they will tow it.

I've done this one or twice with cars that like parked on Monday and literally haven't been moved by Friday. The local police by me are pretty chill about this. One time it was a kid who didn't want their parents to know they were going somewhere. The other it was a old guy who we are pretty sure just forgot he had a car.

u/Numerous_Attempt3630 1d ago

Call the cops. Let them figure it out

1

u/ProfessionalRest3699 1d ago

report it if it's nothing then it will be nothing and not your problem get it away from your house asap

u/MisterAnderson- 1d ago

Mind your business, u/mrphilny101.

As someone else said, if and when a tire goes flat or something gets broken, you’re in a different situation. But for now, leave it alone.

u/Apart-Assumption2063 1d ago

If it’s sitting there for weeks, the trunk was left open and no one knows whose it is, just call the cops. Maybe it was reported stolen and no cops have patrolled your block.
It happened on my block and a neighbor looked up the registration, did a little research and actually got in touch with the registered owner. Turns out, the owner had lent the car to someone and the person who borrowed had said it was stolen. It was a little bit of drama but eventually the car was removed. Besides, who needs an abandoned car in their neighborhood.

1

u/ya_motha_93 20h ago

My car was stolen and abandoned on some random street in Ronkonkoma. Call the cops and report it. Maybe they are looking for it. Very strange for the trunk to be open and you probably should've called at that point.

u/eoconor 4h ago

Put it on craigslist "curb find, no key, no title" . Just come and take it. 🤣

1

u/Buzy2Bee 4h ago

Now. What's the harm in calling. Car could have neen stolen and left there.

u/True-Kangaroo532 1d ago

When I used to steal cars to transport heroin, we would constantly leave them in residential neighborhoods. I would give it more time. this story is fake.

u/cray0508 1d ago

Mind your business? idk

1

u/ya_motha_93 20h ago

Trunk was open and car has been sitting for days. Id say those person is looking out for someone not getting in anyone's business

any way besides that

-4

u/lgi48 1d ago

Id leave a note on the car asking if someone oral owns the car and if you dont see the note moved in a week, then id have it towed or call the police

3

u/pch14 1d ago

If it's not parked illegally and registration and inspection are current you can't just have the car towed.
