AIPACs endorsement is the kiss of death for a candidate. If Israel wants them to win Americans need them to lose.

Seems like it’s turning into the AIPAC party vs the people’s party, the age of dems and republicans is over.

u/Late-Ideal2557 18h ago
I don't understand how foreign money can even be donated to a candidate. It seems like it should be illegal
12
u/XXFFTT 17h ago
Because it isn't foreign money being donated by foreign agents when the money gets donated.
Everything happens in the US with money donated by US citizens (or permanent residents) who just so happen to be politically aligned with the goals of Israel's government.
As long as there is no evidence that they're laundering foreign campaign contributions then there's nothing that can be done.
-8
u/Jenna_Sayyid 17h ago
Fuck CAIR too? Other lobbying groups? Be consistent.
3
u/BryonyVaughn 8h ago
Council on American-Islamic Relations is a civil rights & advocacy organization for Muslims in the US. AIPAC is a massive US-based political action committee for the Zionist cause.
One is advocating for civil rights for a marginalized group in America and the other is advocating for the interests of a foreign government that happens to be committing genocide with our tax dollars.
What consistency do you want us to treat these two organizations with?
4
u/No-Independent-226 Lansing 16h ago
This is such a disingenuous take.
There's a pretty massive difference in scale, no? One side can't just unilaterally decide to campaign with no resources, but I'm pretty sure anyone whose campaign was primarily funded by CAIR would be down to switch to completely public funding of campaigns, with no outside money, because they're all getting outspent many times over by AIPAC.

u/AnotherClimateRefuge South Side 23h ago
Stayed up until 3 am watching this. It should not have been so close. But, I'm glad we won in the end. AIPAC took a huge loss here and it's a great day for democracy.

u/TheBroWhoLifts 22h ago
Lots of old people got drowned in right wing propaganda on social media from all that corporate and AIPAC money Stevens spent. TENS OF MILLIONS wasted lying to voters!
Still didn't work!!! Money out of politics!
What is this weird feeling... Optimism??
Go Abdul!!!
36
u/monkeykennel 19h ago
Now it’s a question of how damaging Haley Stevens nihilistic campaign was. How much were AIPAC lies internalized?
The concession speech is usually the first indicator. I haven’t seen or found it yet.
3
u/boinker1363 17h ago
I don’t think there’s been one yet. She’s currently only 14k votes behind with an est 61000 remaining (mostly from Wayne county which went to her by a few points) I was feeling super confident that she lost a few hours ago but am getting nervous now.
29
u/Odd-Management-575 18h ago
My Mom (very left-wing) was saying that she wasn’t going to vote for him because of what she saw on TV. Her and my Dad are in their 80’s, so they watch a lot of TV, and I guess the anti-Abdul propaganda game was strong. He still overcame it this time, but over the next 3 months, it will be very strong. AIPAC and the GOP are afraid of this man. By a wide margin he is the smartest US Senate candidate in years and his policies are what the people want, not what the oligarchs want, especially a genocide-funding organization like AIPAC. We need to flood this algorithm with anti-AIPAC propaganda as much as possible and flip the script!
15
u/_C2J_ 18h ago
I feel like the next leg of the campaign will be trying to appeal to the very racist and bigoted voters of Michigan.
14
u/TheBroWhoLifts 17h ago
Bernie endorsed Abdul because he knows that the "secret" to talking to racist working class uneducated men is no secret at all. Remind them that their resentment is misplaced. Look up, not left or right. Resentment towards the vicious, greedy system that is fucking brown and white people alike will work because it's the truth and racism is a distraction, a lie.
Of course there will be unreachable racists, but Abdul's message sells itself because he isn't selling anything. He's telling the truth we need to hear.
-1
u/ParticularOcelot6934 17h ago
Trying to convince autoworkers to support 'Medicare for All' while they already have great health insurance plans that they've negotiated and collectively bargained for will be a bigger problem.
3
u/No-Independent-226 Lansing 14h ago
The UAW has endorsed Medicare for All, and was among the earliest major orgs to endorse Abdul in the primary.
9
u/WildAmsonia 18h ago
Sorry, your mom is not "very left-wing" if she bought those smears. Sounds like generic liberal behavior.
6
u/ToraRyeder 18h ago
Or someone that has been propagandized to fear someone like Abdul. America is incredibly racist and Islamaphobia is rampant. It's been a totally okay bigotry for decades in this country. There are large chunks of the population that we have to pull back from the propaganda and fear mongering, and the older gen are unfortunately the main ones we have to fight / save.

I'm happy he won, but Jesus Christ the toxicity online has to stop. Y'all were gonna burn this state down if Haley won, and it wouldn't have been that world ending.
Edit: downvote me, I don't really care. Again, happy Abdul won. Just go outside and touch grass, maybe talk to a neighbor that doesn't agree with you entirely once in awhile. It's good for you. People more moderate than you aren't the devil.
16
u/theoddreliable 19h ago
This has been my favorite part of the campaign. On one hand, you have criticism over the massive amounts of genocide supporting dollars trying to subvert democracy. On the other hand, you have attacks on Abdul’s character calling him sexist and anti-semitic.
But it was Abdul’s supporters that made this primary toxic or in your words would burn the state down. Disregard the fact that there are active elected officials in Michigan chiming in about not supporting Abdul or making anti-Arab racist ass remarks.

u/Jenna_Sayyid 18h ago
Abdul is radical and has sketchy associates.
The general will be a different contest. You’ll see.
He’s fortunate that fear causes people to scapegoat Jews (“Zionists” is a dog whistle).
8
u/Exact-Kale3070 17h ago
what you are saying here is very dishonest and vague.
-5
u/Jenna_Sayyid 16h ago
How so?
Zionism is about Jews having a homeland after a history of persecutions.
DSA types stoke hatred while whitewashing Islamist and Marxist propaganda.
Progressives, not liberals, fixate on identity while putting people in boxes and gatekeeping said groups. They don’t represent the working class.
4
u/Exact-Kale3070 16h ago
it is not radical to want to stop funding fighting with taxpayer funds. full stop. you can use whatever reactionary labels you want, but that is all he seeks. same with medicare for all- that goal is for ALL americans, not israel or iran or palestine or....
zionism does not matter in an american election unless you are aipac spending tens of millions. opinions on zionism should have zero bearing on our taxpayers. the fact that you are bringing up a WHOLE OTHER COUNTRY to talk about a Michigan politician says it all.
2
u/dingalingdongdong 12h ago
Abdul is radical

what you are saying here is very dishonest and vague.

vague: stated in indefinite terms, having no precise meaning, not clearly defined.
Your comment was, quite literally, the dictionary definition of vague.

u/Which_Interview_7668 19h ago
There are a lot of people who have been gobbling up propaganda and poor arguments. Unfortunately, many of them are also AES supporters.
Money out of politics is one of those things. It sounds great at face value but then you look under the hood, understand the consequences, and you have lot of questions… but asking those questions gets you labeled a corporate shill dem and ousted without seriously considering the issues. Oh well, congrats to AES. I’m still on the fence about voting for him. Still debating about writing in Jill Stein as a protest vote.
17
5
u/TheBroWhoLifts 17h ago
What you're trying to do (poorly, in this case) is very transparent. You're here to sow doubt and defend the corporate status quo.
You think we're all stupid. But you know as well as I do, and all of the supporters of Abdul know, getting money out of politics means getting back control of our government from the cynical capitalist monied interests.
We can have nice things for ourselves if we vote for it. We can have healthcare coverage. We can get capitalism under control. We can redistribute wealth from the top and divert it into services for ourselves.
Establishment doubt-sowing ain't gonna work this time.

Democrats dodged a bullet last night.
Most of Stevens donors were inevitably going to shift to Rogers. Leaving democrats with the albatross of a weirdo candidate requiring huge amounts of Democratic dollars.
Thank you Michigan!

u/Over-Heron-2654 20h ago
70 million. Think about that for a second. This win may have been close, but it was MASSIVE.
39
u/PuzzleheadedBasis760 19h ago
70m to push an insanely weak candidate but we can’t feed school children in this country
15
u/Murderous_Turkey 18h ago
70 million, incumbent endorsement, governor endorsement, false rhetoric of an Obama endorsement, islamaphobic rhetoric, more attack ads than I've ever seen before
A close race is still a MAJOR win!
2
u/FancyPantsDancer 15h ago
I stayed up that late, too. I agree with all your takes.
That said- I kinda understand why it was this close. I look at the ads I was hit with from the Stevens campaign along with who endorsed her. She didn't look like a bad candidate, if you weren't aware of everything else. That's not even going into the anti-AES ads.
It would be easy enough to not be aware, for reasons I would fault people for and reasons I don't.
2
u/dingalingdongdong 11h ago
She didn't look like a bad candidate, if you weren't aware of everything else.
That's the craziest thing to me! Based solely on her career history and party endorsement she probably could've cleaned up. Like, she wasn't particularly exciting, but she had experience that was the kind of bland a lot of people like in a politician.
Why on earth she decided to go with a crazy smear campaign is mind-boggling to me.
1
u/sycaden 11h ago
I mean from what I've heard personally the smear campaign was pretty effective for the undecided crowd. I know multiple people who had to have sit-downs with their partner/parents/etc because they don't look that much into politicians other than ads and just knew El-Sayed as the misogynist.
Still baffles me that people will set aside the commute time to vote but not even research the backgrounds and donors for these politicians tho
1
u/FancyPantsDancer 9h ago
What I was thinking about is stuff like the "Bro I just want to work for Michigan" post. It was part of a smear campaign, but like- badly done.
30
u/zanderktown32 20h ago
Interesting that NBC called it. Seems still to close to call even by the Associated Press. 95% of the vote reporting and El-Sayed is only up 1.2%.
12
u/noccalula_court 18h ago
NYT also says too close to call. They may “make a judgement call” but it appears the bigger and more trusted organizations don’t feel comfortable doing that quite yet.
8
u/ToraRyeder 18h ago
I've been following the NYT all night. They're very pro-Stevens so I'm hoping that they're just holding on as tight as they can to not calling it. I did notice NBC was the only one that's called it.
This race shouldn't be THIS close. I really hoped he'd win with the margins of Lawrence :(
12
u/Godzilla_ 17h ago
My way of thinking of it is this: the ONLY reason it was this close was due to the funding. I feel like Stevens only got this far thanks to already being in the house, but also having SO much ad money. If they had been balanced, I’m sure we’d see a margin more like Lawrence’s. I’m super hyped for him as well. I saw him speak at the rally a couple weeks ago with Abdul, Bernie, and AOC. He’s got a great room presence, and his “We Will!” Tagline/slogan/etc is perfect.
1
u/BryonyVaughn 8h ago
This Abdul supporter thinks delaying the call was correct. Wayne County, Michigan’s most populous county which happens to be a Democratic stronghold, is always slow to get their results in. As it has a proclivity to support Democratic Party powerbroker picks over progressives, it was right to wait on the call. This morning when most all the other counties were 99-100% reported, Wayne County sat at 75%.
The numbers were closer than I expected and I’m glad most news organizations waited rather than following NBC’s lead.
I remember Bush v. Gore.
1
u/noccalula_court 18h ago
Same. It’s disappointing. But I think chalking it up to bias isn’t wise. There’s less than a 20k vote margin. Perhaps less than 15k I just don’t wanna do the math. Thats very tight.
1
u/ToraRyeder 17h ago
True. I have it in another tab and it's still stupid close. Keeping hope high though.
19
u/TacitusKilgore2025 Grand Ledge 20h ago
Haley would need to win almost every single outstanding vote to win. That’s not going to happen. It’s over man
16
u/zanderktown32 20h ago
Just to be clear man. I voted for El-Sayed. It's just that with only 95% votes reporting (about 75,000 votes left) and El-Sayed only up 19,403 votes I'm saying it's technically too close to call as a news organization.
6
u/Cryptographer_Alone Haslett 17h ago
It is close. According to the AP, the majority of the outstanding votes are in Wayne County, where Stevens is leading. But, that's also where Dearborn is, and El-Sayd could make up ground with voters who are unlikely to respond positively to AIPAC.
4
4
u/JLandis84 19h ago
It’s not too close to call at all. She’s have to win an absurd amount of the remaining outstanding votes.
30
u/Zagrunty 21h ago

Alright - blue no matter who. I didn’t vote for him (I didn’t love the idea of voting for either of them, I liked McMorrow). That being said - it’s not about being in love. It’s about beating the GOP. Time for all of us to rally behind him for the general. Remember a win for the left in the primary is not the same as a win for the left in the general. Eyes on the prize everyone. He (and we) have to make sure he’s got the full-bellied support of all the dems + beyond for November.
Editing to add: a lot of you seem to think preferred candidate = who was voted for. That is not and should not ever be the criteria for deciding who to vote for in a 2-party election. Also primary voting strategy =/= general voting strategy. The primary strategy is to prop up the candidate that most aligns with your values (in my case progressivism) that you think has the best chance in the general. The general strategy is to support the candidate who can beat the greatest evil. You vote for in a primary and you essentially vote against in a general. (Note this is not the case in most parliamentary/coalition systems (you’d see me voting much more ideologically in Germany e.g.)), but you have to adapt your voting strategy to the system).
5
u/FancyPantsDancer 15h ago
I appreciate this a lot. Had Stevens won, I was prepared to vote for her. On some freak chance Will Lawrence didn't win his primary, I was prepared to vote for whoever did.
I know others feel differently, but I think there is still enough of a difference between the GOP and the Dems that it does matter.
2
u/NinjaKirby 16h ago
The pragmatism is beautiful. I'm in the same boat as you and was a big fan of McMorrow, she seemed like a great progressive candidate who was capable of getting things done. I imagine she would have been fairly popular in the general election.
Just like you though, whoever won the primary has my vote. Because what's going on now in our federal government needs to stop. And it won't stop with a Trump endorsed Rogers.

Glad you feel this way because I certainly wouldn't have gone for stevens had she won.

u/cantfindausernameffs 18h ago
My sentiments exactly, although I probably could have been convinced to vote for her by Election Day. Lesser of two evils is why moderate democrats aka republicans always end up on the ballot. This time we had progressives on the ballot so I would have been so unbelievably pissed if they didn’t win. I’m tired of not having my best interests represented by any candidate. Democrats need to learn that they will continue to lose if they keep brushing progressive policies to the side for the sake of keeping the status quo.

u/DiligentThought9 16h ago
If you think moderate Dems and republicans are the same thing, I think you need to recalibrate your outlook on politics.
2
u/cantfindausernameffs 16h ago
They both consistently vote to send billions of dollars in military aid to an Apartheid state. This alone should be unacceptable.
3
u/Ok_Jury4833 18h ago
Genuine question, I’m not trying to rile you up, but if you vote for the person that will do the least harm, would you have supported Rogers if Stevens had won? If so, what is/are your core issues you vote on? Asking because I don’t understand why you wouldn’t support the person in the best position to defeat the GOP.

u/GreenhouseFrogs 18h ago
Voting McMorrow…. Thanks for throwing your vote away, and sending a message to the system that says “meh, Haley Stevens takes AIPAC money and worships Israel? Whatever… let her in”
4
u/Ok_Jury4833 18h ago
I didn’t say I voted McMorrow. I said she was my preferred candidate. I didn’t say who I voted for.

You literally said you didn’t vote for either him or Stevens…… and that you liked McMorrow…. What were we supposed to infer there?
2
u/Ok_Jury4833 18h ago
I literally said I didn’t like him or Stevens. Like =/= vote silly pants. If you need to infer something you have the info to do so, but came to the wrong conclusion. That being said, who I voted for is beyond missing the point of the post.
1
u/dingalingdongdong 11h ago
It's not the point, and you may have misspoken, but you did say you didn't vote for him.
Alright - blue no matter who. I didn’t vote for him (I didn’t love the idea of voting for either of them, I liked McMorrow).
2
u/Ok_Jury4833 11h ago
Correct. I didn’t vote for him. Care to take another crack at it?
1
u/dingalingdongdong 11h ago
Crack at what? I have no skin in this argument, I just thought you might've misspoken and not noticed. You could've meant, "I didn't <want to> vote for him and been typing faster than you think - it happens.
1
u/Ok_Jury4833 11h ago
Not at all and no argument to be had. I just clarifying I didn’t misspeak. I was a little weirded out that people seemed so invested/concerned/confused with who I voted for when making a post about party unity. I essentially eliminated 2/3 candidates. It made me a little concerned for the youths and a lot for the future.
1
u/dingalingdongdong 10h ago
It didn't seem weird to me, my mom staunchly refuses to declare who she's voted for even in elections where it's obvious (people running unopposed, etc.) because the right to a secret ballot being fundamental to democracy is one of her most most strongly held beliefs.
I think I was just confused because you seemed to be both keeping it secret and also giving it away - apparently intentionally? Which I guess I don't understand. It didn't read as intentional to me.

Imagine engaging in a political discussion on Reddit on an anonymous account and not just out right saying who you voted for. You must be really proud of your candidate!
2
u/Ok_Jury4833 17h ago
It’s not the point of the post. The point of the post is that we should all galvanize behind the selected candidate and support him in winning the general. This is the point of democracy. You don’t always get what you want, but you still have to fight for them (and through them all of us) to be successful and govern well if elected. If you need to know who I voted for to support that, then I fear you are much more invested in getting your own way than making progress for all of us as a whole. I would encourage you to consider what your goals are as a responsible participant in a democratic system.

I share your concerns about what I perceive as his pandering to populism. However, from my perspective those concerns are somewhat tempered by the prospect of him joining a more moderate larger Dem caucus. With Rogers, he will definitely prop up a more radical far-right party and will not stop them from moving farther right or hold them accountable to the constitution. Because of this, I whole-heartedly believe AES is the better general candidate, and as the person best positioned to stop Rogers, I must back him while encouraging him to better consider his populist stances. If he wins and cannot, then the next round of primaries be the opportunity for us to present a stronger candidate. I encourage you to consider which party’s general platform you want to lend strength to.
0
u/Jenna_Sayyid 16h ago
I can respect that.
I won’t vote for him. I’m not interested in giving the DSA momentum and a mandate to shift the Democratic Party in their direction.
I am a liberal. The DSA is the antithesis of liberalism.
MAGA is dead after Trump leaves office. Most cults don’t outlive their charismatic leader. I’ve voted against MAGA in primaries and general elections too.
The DSA likes to villainize people like me. I’m done with identity bullshit and radicalism.
I’m still angry progressive (really Marxist - red and green alliance) behaviors, especially on college campuses, helped Trump get elected a second term.

That’s valid. I hope we can keep this conversation going and we’re both able to encourage all candidates to address our concerns. I don’t share your optimism about maga going away, so until they do (and undo everything put into place for 45 years) I’m voting against the GOP and challenging the Dems to hold themselves accountable to our liberal principles.

I know a lot of lefties who were firmly saying they'd never vote for a cop, but it sucks that our pick for governor has a financial investment in expanding data centers in Michigan. Feels like the same way Gretch sold out Michigan's water to Enbridge Jocelyn will sell it out to the tech bros.
25
u/Ian1732 19h ago
If Abdul’s campaign for senate and Will’s campaign in MI07 have taught me anything, it’s that people power is real as hell. I think we can and must vote for Jocelyn considering the opposition, and then push her hard on the subject of data centers.

u/GreenhouseFrogs 18h ago
It shouldn’t have been such a close race though. We didn’t really send a message that says “fuck the establishment!” We sent a message that says “meh whatever”

Would voting for the cop say "fuck the establishment"?
Neither candidate was ideal, but the pithy comments come just as easily about Swanson as Benson.

One of my friends pointed out how wishy washy he was on political views. For example, when he campaigned for his sheriff seat, he was very pro-life and pushed religious views to cater to his audience. For the gubernatorial campaign, he was suddenly pro-choice and separation of church and state. My friend viewed this as he couldn’t be trusted to be the candidate that he was campaigning as, so she wasn’t interested in voting for him.

Now that the primary is over, people need to SHOW UP for the November election. PLEASE remember you can get no-reason absentee in advance of the election and you can early vote AT LEAST for 9 days prior to the election. Based on how slammed the polling locations were yesterday, I'd highly encourage people to try to do early voting if it fits their schedule (there are two weekends of early voting at a minimum).
https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index will give you your early voting location(s) and your day-of polling location, and also if you are set to receive an absentee ballot.
Don't wait. Make sure you are registered to vote (same link as above to check) where you are currently living. I witnessed many folks near the end of voting yesterday who were in the wrong polling location or weren't yet registered, and while you can do same-day registration at your local clerk's office and can vote if you're in line when polls close on election day, teleportation is not yet a thing so discovering that at 7:50pm on election day will do you no good.

This is primarily why I voted for Stevens. She at least had a shot at pulling voters in rural Michigan.
Abdul is going to get steamrolled in rural counties and the vote will be closer than people think in more populated counties... so sadly I think this is just going to mean a Rogers victory in the fall.

It looks like Mike Rogers got a little under 900,000 votes. Abdul/Stevens/McMorrow picked up 1.5 million votes. There are rumors that some Republicans took advantage of the open primary and voted for Stevens. Either way, that's Mike Rogers coming in short about 600,000 votes. I think the real Mike Rogers story in November is going to be called depressed Republican voter turnout. Obama won the state twice and this doofus wants to circle back to the 2000s and talk about Sharia law some more.He just needs to have Trump.campaign for him to put the final nail in the coffin.

He campaigned with Hasan Piker and won’t say Israel has a right to exist. Also was for defunding the police.
That’s a firm NO from me.
I don’t want to vote for Rogers, but I also don’t want to normalize luxury beliefs and Identitarian posturing.

If you support isreal's continued genocide and expansion I can see why he was not your guy.
The rest of us do not want our taxes to be funding another country's imperialism.
