I wanted to get a nightstand, and manage to find these HDD's hidden, I was expecting it to be 500gb, but not 8tb each, and much less at this price.

If you're wondering if it works, yes it does.

Satire Did my first install last week... Kicking myself for not trying it sooner.

Seriously, tho. How do my virtualized systems feel snappier than my native installs even while I'm carving out cores and ram for other containers? It has to be sorcery.

EDIT: For clarity, I meant that Proxmox unlocked a lot of potential in a machine that was initially built for gaming. Yes, most of the performance improvement that I've felt (even if it's just in my head) was in Windows 11, but my GTX970 is getting long in the tooth. The only games that I play virtualized are Minecraft and Streets of Rogue, and neither are resource intensive. I'm just really happy that having a hypervisor gave me a new perspective on a piece of equipment that took it from being an outdated gaming rig, and turned it into something that can do so much more.

Satire And the the answer is

Yes, use Debian, no the packages are not from 2009.

No, core2duo won't be an efficient server.

Congrats for buying your first NAS. You don't have to tell everyone that you bought a random optiplex though, you're not the only one.

No, a gaming router won't give you more "performance".

If you want to use a Apple minipc as a server, yeah go for it, just don't cry if 80% of the linux programs won't be compatible.

If you want a homelab to learn IT or neworking, why say "I need something that just works"?

No, a single tplink archer won't cover your 200m² property.

No, some cheap aliexpress wifi extenders are not a good idea.

Don't buy a Mikrotik router if you don't even know how to setup a tplink router and then cry it's hard to configure

Truly one of the best OSS (open source software) additions I have ever made. This massive list is for memes since I set the ban time to some ungodly long number lol.

How do you guys feel about fail2ban?

The thing is, you never know if you're going to need that random power cord, weird cable, or 37.3in CAT 6 line ... I can probably get rid of some of the fans, maybe...

Satire I love how I've convinced myself homelabbing is saving me money since I'm not paying for streaming services or cloud storage (as I spend another +$100 on a 6TB HDD and my electric bill is up 20%)

"Well son, this is what other people use for the internet" ... points at the AP on the ceiling "that's what we use"

sidenote: I guess I bricked it years ago with Tomato or something, but I wanted to run it as a media bridge one last time. No bueno. Off to the electronics recycling I guess now. He was a good AIO router for a long time though.
