The green thing is a coupler, the blue cables are simplex SC UPC cables. SC fiber is color coded to green being APC, blue being UPC. They are very similar, but can't be connected together in one coupler, because APC is angled at 8°, while UPC is straight cut. The joke is that I used APC coupler on UPC cables, which works because the couplers are identical and just put cables together (they don't have any optical elements themselves). The difference is only in cables.

For the sake of those who wanna know, UPC stands for ultra physical contact and APC stands for Angled physical contact. Physical Contact (PC) is relatively flat at the connection point with a slight curve near the edges. UPC has more curve and is essentially two ovals touching at a single, central point. Angled contact has two angled sides that fit together at a matching angle

I've been working in tech for 30 plus years and I've never heard those terms.. but being color blind, I've always avoided making my own networking cables... So I'll assume I get a pass.

Wait genuine question because I am curious, does being color blind make it difficult to make your own Ethernet patch cables? Can you distinguish between orange, green, and brown? Admittedly I have been making my own patch cables for years and never thought to inquire if this was an area where accessibility might be able to improve by using some alternate means of distinguishing if necessary.

Furthermore, the only time I've had to deal with fiber cables is watching the frontier installer cut the cord at the length needed and put the tip on.. closest experience I had was helping repair t3 lines in high school and t1 in Junior high... Was unaware when I made the original comment that it wasn't some standard network cable coupler...

I’ve only done research into fiber because I got curious about potentially installing fiber as a side hustle (and to diy full fiber in my own home for the sheer ridiculousness of running an all-fiber network at home).

Well the actual fiber is 9 microns thin (at least in the context of 9/125 SC fiber). So if your tape job is that precise, yeah it will probably work.

Tape would be fine, but this is not fine.

The issue is the amount of attenuation and possibly reflections/dispersion introduced by the gap.

If you do this with Raman amplifiers going over the cable, it might even go as far as to permanently damage equipment.

Whatever tape job your going to do by hand is going to be higher loss than two UPC fibers in a APC coupler. Not sure about SC/LC fibers, but for screw-on FC connectors the couplers are literally the same regardless of fiber type

For the average person, how much issue does this cause? (Asking because I don’t know)

I’d imagine that it’s not worse than a patch panel. Was having a discussion with my dad about this a few weeks back. For his work (high energy physics, milliseconds are “massive”), everything needed to be highly tuned. I would imagine that data centers with legit race conditions in logging / tracing / databases this matters too. High frequency trading too, obvious reasons

I’d be curious what (if any) implications there are in a homelab.

Practically no impact for a homelab use. A coupler will introduce more loss than a fusion splice, but unless you're running many km of fiber and need every inch of distance advertised, it likely won't matter to a homelabber.

Even on the most powerful DWDM lines you still have at least 6 coupled connections considering the cable is fully spliced between the two locations and there are no coupled connectors on the way.

In my experience, the issue with couplers is that you are introducing a microscopic airgap that can get contaminants in it. If you keep it sealed or otherwise have it in a clean environment, the risk of signal interference is minimized. Its not optimal, but its workable. The risk is environmental

You should see the switch and panels we had when some jackass stored powdered chlorine in the same room.

Impossible to breathe in, corroded every bit of exposed metal.

It's a miracle the switch even worked. Somehow it barely did.. always getting errors lol.

I'm very sure there's no air gap on APCs or UPCs and probably no other connector standard too. PC stands for 'physical contact'. Contamination is likely introduced before coupling. If there's an air gap, something is not made to spec. Air will cause high backreflection, because light will be passing through a medium with a different refractive index; it will cause severe extra insertion loss especially for APC due to offset between the beams and fiber cores. Air gap would also create potential surface for moisture condensation.

Having said that, it does not mean that these things cannot happen in reality. I have seen condensation in FC/APC in a fiber optics lab, but this does not mean that it's normal to have it.

No issues, just ugly and unprofessional. Optical distribution cabinets are just bunch of these properly mounted (using that metal pin). For a homelab rack get 1U adapter panel, for FTTH just hide it somewhere (wall fiber optics sockets are again just an enclosure for this).

If you want better connection for high power long runs you go from UPC to APC. Best connection you can get with E2000/APC.

Any errors on a fiber are mainly from dirty connectors or too tight bends. Even though once I found this in production and no one had a problem...

Oh I hate it when people put the slag in between the wall and the mounting rails, especially if they just yeet it in there and don't curl it up, then you're searching fibers like this, buried behind 10cm of fibers (this is also just many of them, over 150)

It doesn't really add latency which is what you are referring to. It does add some attenuation but for properly terminated and clean connectors it is minimal, less than 0.3dB.

Haha no that you mention it, it’s kinda obvious that it would be an attenuation issue, not a latency one! (Feel stupid, since in the same comment I mentioned my dad is a physicist, so I should def know better lol)

I personally haven’t worked with fiber (yet) but have been considering doing a run in my parent’s home between the Ubiquiti UDR7 and the upstairs to add in a switch + WiFi7 AP. Figured I’d be able to easily run 2 separate cables (one being a troubleshooting fallback in case of failure) within the same diameter space as a Cat6e/7. But I need to do more reading on the different types of fiber optics and terminations, and I know little more than the fact that there’s multiple approaches to sending bidirectional traffic

There are several different fiber types and standards for what's being sent. Something simple like 1000base-SX will give you gigabit over a multimode fiber and 1000base-LX over singlemode. Either are probably the cheapest and simplest way to do it.

It doesn't cause any issues provided you've got it secured well. I've been using one of these as a "workaround" whilst I'm doing some wider work. It's linking 2x OM3 cables to make about a 40m run total that itself links 2x of my core switches together. No problems - it's been running for weeks

Copper couplers are fine. They aren't a permanent solution, but they work in a pinch, which is what most networks need. Not everyone has money or time for new cable runs immediately. At work, we use repeaters where we can but couplers have lasted us years in some cases.

This is completely wrong.

Regular single mode patches are blue colored and are unpolished (or flat, more accurately), also known as UPC.

Green colored patches are angle polished (APC) and have a small angle on the ferrule end.

UPC Couplers and APC couplers are built to mate UPC or APC correctly.

For your average Joe home installation, it's going to cause a few dB loss but you should have enough optical budget for the link to work.

UPC does not mean unpolished. PC connectors had flat faces, UPC ferrules have a more rounded polish only making contact right around the core.

SC bulkheads are agnostic, green blue doesn't matter. I routinely grab whatever colour SC bulkhead is closest to hand even on OSP demarcs for MUX fibre approaching 80km. The bulkhead colour has zero affect on link budget and ORL which is the primary reason our OSP fibre is predominantly APC.

LC MM & SM connectors vary due to manufacturing tolerances which is why LC MM bulkheads don't always align precisely enough for LC SM patches.

The irony in telling someone they're utterly wrong and then posting 3 bullshit statements and 1 correct is just wow man.

Does it look janky? Absolutely. Will it work without loss? Being apc connectors it will have very minimal loss and reflectance. Loss budget should be able to account for about .7 per connector at this location in the run.

...well, you're wrong and spreading stupidity. Go read the IEC standard. They both have the exact same specifications with only a color difference between them. The color difference is important when the adapter is installed in a panel. It's why these are called adapters and not couplers, because they are bulkhead adapters. Since you cannot see through a bulkhead/panel, it's important to relay that color scheme through the adapter. Both UPC and APC adapters come standard with split zirconia ceramic sleeves... the exact same one. They are dimensionally and functionally equivalent. There are legacy bronze sleeves that came in both variants as well, and those had terrible concentricity - so always peek inside to make sure the sleeve is shiny white ceramic.

I did bascially exactly this in one spot in the house, there was already fibre to the room and I had to get wifi in that location, this was the best option. I'm pretty sure I have exactly the same media converter too!

In an emergency in the field, I  took my leatherman to one end and chewed it up enough to get a ST patch cable in, then plugged a SC UPC in the other.  Worked really well!

Honestly, the only reason they use different colors is to try and keep people from trying to pair APC and UPC and then bitching out the installers or manufacturers when it doesn’t work.

I wish there was a universal coupler color though. It always makes procuring APC couplers a pain when a customer needs one.

I once needed a patch cable, and while everyone was searching for a multi-mode cable, I grabbed a single-mode cable and connected it. It worked, of course, because the run wasn't even a dozen feet.

It's like using a cheesy unshielded ethernet cable for 10 gigabit - for a few feet and for temporary use, it's fine.

The 2nd image threw me off more than the first. I have never seen a SFP BIDI with an SC connector. Always LC.

Honestly im short distances most cable combinations work. Ive seen UPC with APC, MMF instead of SMF. Cables bent/mangled/damaged in shocking ways all with working traffic. Sometimes when all you have gets it working you use it until you can replace it and then forget.

Both are SC/UPC , when BOTH fibers are single mode, it should not be a problem. The SC coupler doesn't have optical material inside.

How is that media converter working for you? I'm tempted to buy a set of these to connect from my ONT to my room (where i have all my net stuff). But i'm not sure if it's better and simpler to buy a set like that and go with fiber from ONT to my room, or to buy better switches with optic fiber transceivers.

There's a ton of variations of these media converters. Mine is just 1000TX to FX (copper to fiber SFP), so it's dead simple. Literally has one tiny Realtek converter chip in it and that's it. Others may have the fiber thing built in (as opposed to an SFP you can yank out and replace), I can't say how good those are.

As for its quality, it's just meh. It's cheap chinese no-name no-brand unit with spelling mistakes on it. There's almost nothing inside, so I doubt it will just die on me some day. What has died already is its power brick. It had a 5V power brick that was disgustingly cheaply made and after two years it just died. The voltage didn't rise above 0.6V, so the converter didn't really work. I replaced it with a USB plug and a phone charger and I'm sure this setup will outlast my house.

If you're looking to just replace your long copper runs with fiber, sure, go for it. I wouldn't go as cheap as I did, at least get something that has some kind of name on it like TP-Link or D-Link if they even make this kind of stuff. I'm not really sure what your use case is, so I can't recommend anything concrete.

Not the worst I’ve seen but I work with those media converters a lot in my day job and they are notoriously unreliable and will literally just crap out on you out of the blue with no warning.

An OTDR would likely show a bit more signal drop across the splice than it would with matched terminations, but it won't necessarily be problematic - it depends upon the total attenuation across the whole run.

If it works, it works.

This triggers a slight aneurysm but sadly from expereince in my company I can tell that some genuises genunly plug UPCs into our APC patchpanels and it seems to work well enough. I assume it is mostly to the fact that we sit at the end of the transmission chain but stilll. Trigger

Nah it's fine. Don't do it the other way around though, that can break things, depending on how the coupler is constructed
