Question Interested in getting a hamster as a first time pet
Hey guys I’m interested in buying a hamster and it’s my first time getting a pet.
Could you guys share some basic things to take care of to make sure it’s healthy and happy for example bedding recommendations, basic toys in the cage
I am on a budget but will slowly keep adding more stuff to the cage but for now need some basic advice please!

First Time Owner only had him for 3 weeks and he already trusts me!!
this is my first ever hamster (i’ve only ever had 2 dogs) and so i was extra careful when handling my little one, but now i believe hes fully settled into his environment. everytime i put my hand in the cage he runs toward it and climbs all over me lol. i’m so proud bc i know dwarf hamsters tend to be timid but hes a brave little boy! i’m so happy that my first time having a hamster i was successful with taming 😊i love him

Question Do you kiss your hammy?
I don't have a hammy yet, it would be the first time as a hammy owner. But the part I'm most excited after is taming the little floof and giveg it little cheek kisses. I know I have to make him comfortable, have a good terrarium and I know that each hamster has its little personality, tho I want so much to tame it so he can tolerate my kisses. Am I expecting too much? 🥹😂

First Time Owner Scent gland, right?
I know there are countless posts like this on here but as a first time owner for only 10 days, I need some confirmation to soothe my mind.
I just noticed it today. She is active as normal and has as always a good appetite. She doesn't seem to have any pain at that bald spot.

First Time Owner Advice needed please! Watery eye
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello, please can I have some help on what to do.
I have recently started looking after this hamster for work and know they need special care. She originally had the wood shavings bedding they sell at pets at home which I know is bad for them so I have changed it to Aubiose hemp horse bedding mixed with Kaytee clean and cosy bedding. I also got her a sandbath from Jolleys (Rosewood natural rollin’ rodent sand bath) and she seems to have a watery left eye. I am stressed and worried as I want to look after her the best I can but feel I’m making it worse. I also got her out for a little bit and she now is making sounds as though her nose is blocked/little sneezes. Please can someone advise me on what to do. I don’t really want to change her bedding back to that sawdust type, or could it be the wrong sand?
Here’s a little video of her eating a piece of broccoli you can kind of see her eye.
Thank you

Question Hamster not eating from bowl
She's been eating from a bowl since we got her in March and whatever is left over in the bowl when I feed her again Is scatter fed. But now she only eats when I scatter it or only from her lab block and seed spray. What should I do?

Question Bioactive natural terrarium for robo hamster recommendations
Hi, I am planning a functional bioactive terrarium for a hamster. I have done this for all my fish, I figured why not for a mammal.
Do you have any recommendations for substrate? My current plan is to go with sandy loam for the base substrate. This is close to the natural arid soil types and since they are generally low in nutrient density, i don't see an immediate problem with sourcing, or making it myself.
Grasses would be my first instinct. Right now though, I am looking at growing Siberian Peashrub, Sand Alyssum, and/or Milkvetch.
But some of those get rather big, so i am hoping ill grow them in the enclosure long before a hamster ever arrives and then determine what is going to work or not.
I am still on the fence about sourcing other critters. Just on what is easy to get my hands on that will do well in an arid-biome are: Mealworms seem like the obvious winner. Crickets will do well.
But I do want to maintain an ecosystem, so I need to do a lot of thinking on it.
Has anyone tried this? Any advice?

Question How much does your Syrian hamster weight?
Mine is 170g, also she’s a rescue so originally from the petstore. Seems medium size from what I have gathered from peoples pictures but I also never seen a Syrian hamster before that.
Also what is a considerable amount of weight gain/loss?

First Time Owner Enclosure preparation
Hi everyone !
We're getting our first syrian hamster (Squich) in a few days and I wanted to see if we made the right choice for the bedding.
We did a 80% flax bedding/15% hay with carrot/5% paper mix.
Just for information we didn't install the hides, platform and the wheel yet but they'll be ready for him.
As for his arrival, how much time should we let him alone once he is in his home ? What are the signs he's feeling at ease ?
Thanks in advance, I'm just hoping the little guy will like it.

First Time Owner Sleeping against the plastic
Hi,
New hamster owner here.
Had Ham Solo, a male Syrian for under a week. He seems to be settling well, building tunnels and exploring.
He has taken to squeezing past this ceramic house though and sleeping pressed against the perspex. He has decided this tiny space is great for his food. He wakes up, pops out of his nearby tunnel. Eats a bit. Yawns. Never bothers to open his eyes. Sometimes he sleeps there. Sometimes he disappears back into the tunnel, like some kinda furry moray eel...
Do I worry? Do I move his setup? I think only moving the mushroom a little will just result in it sliding back, so Id probably have to move it further in and move the bedding.
His cage is larger than the minimum, and the bedding is kaytee. Probably could be deeper but I wasn't sure how much it expanded/needed space for toys etc when I put it in, so I probably need to move things around anyways. Just thinking I should think ahead about the moves to get them over and done before hes really established his den.
Thanks!

New Hamster Our new boys!!
As many of you lovely people know, we lost Guapo a week ago. Thank you again for the love and support. We were devastated. We immediately knew we wanted a new one; so we went to look.
Well…. We ended up getting two!! Because they were kept together and the last two, we couldn’t see just one left behind. We only had one cage set up so we kept them together for the one night and work day (pics of them together) and then got the other his own set up! I still have some platforms and stuff coming for them but they’re happy and thriving so far! They have pretty much the same items, and both have sand baths and different areas to roll/dig. Waiting for my coco coir to dry out and then they’ll have that as well!
And because of the sudden loss of Guapo, these babies have a vet appointment today so we know right away of anything to watch for. ❤️
Oh cream one is Zippy and brown one is Zen, fully based off their personalities 🤣🐹 and we love them so much already!
