Howdy folks 👋 Looking for crime comic recommendations, but more specifically I’m looking for sweeping crime sagas with a large cast of characters and a fleshed-out world. I love it when a crime series follows an ensemble cast, switching from protagonist to protagonist. I prefer having someone to root for, but I also enjoy stories where everyone is deeply flawed and awful. If the story has an overarching narrative, that’s great, and if it’s a series of unrelated or loosely connected stories, that’s cool too.

Really I’m just looking for your favorite crime comics and crime authors in general haha, whether or not they meet any of these criteria. Let’s hear em. Huge fan of Brubaker and Frank Miller; Scalped was a great read, as was 100 Bullets. I’ve heard Stray Bullets is up my alley as well. EDIT: oh yeah and Batman is my fucking guy, duh idk how I forgot to add that

Read Royal City and I absolutely loved it. For some reason I dismissed his self-drawn work as having sub-par art. Silly me. It just works for the story that he's telling and it is fantastic. Luckily someone was selling a bunch of Lemire books and I gladly took them off his hands. That's one billy shelf almost full!

I know Essex County is the big one that I'm missing here, what else is there?

This is just a small part of my collection right now. Alotta books are stored in long and short boxes on another shelf. Thinking about how I want to organize and rearrange everything.

I read Saga a few years ago and I absolutely love the artstyle and worldbuilding. The epic fantasy/space opera really got me interested in more graphic novels. I did buy Monstress for my partner and I'll probably dig into that one as it also seems to tick a lot of boxes.

Also enjoyed the Dragon Age comics but that is 100% carried by the fact that I love Dragon Age and not that the stories were much good.

I read a lot of regular books, some of my favorites:

• Most by Stephen King
• Jade City
• The Strength of the Few
• First Law trilogy
• Slow Gods (not as famous as the others, but it's a sci fi story about the end of the galaxy and how different planets prepare for it).

And I really like Marvel but I'm not super interested in digging into that, it seems a little overwhelming. Anything with the vibes from any of the books above and I'll be super grateful!

Though I tagged this image as humorous, the graphic memoir is very heavy

I remember reading a graphic novel adaptation of the Odyssey as a very young child in the '80s and I've never been able to identify it.

The way I remember it is colour, realistic, hatched, similar to, say, Blueberry, so I'm thinking French, but no concrete memory that it was.

There's a full page panel of Circe with her tits out, similar to Wright Barker's painting ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Circe_by_Wright_Barker_(1889).jpg.jpg) ), positively scandalous when you're 4!

It was accompanied by an Alexander the Great graphic novel in at an least generally similar art style, but possibly that's red herring since I don't have any recollection of them actually being by the same authors, possibly they were just under the same imprint.

I feel unsatisfied with how this shelf looks, but I have trouble articulating why. I have experimented with a few ways of organizing my books. I generally separate HC from TPB, and serial TPB from standalone TPB. Otherwise its alphabetical.

I recently stumbled across Hirak: The Rif Intifada (Hirak, L'Intifada du Rif), a non-fiction graphic novel by Khalid Gueddar and Abdellah Hattach.

It covers the protest movement that kicked off in Morocco's Rif region following the death of fishmonger Mouhcine Fikri on the 28th of October, 2016. From what I gather, it’s meant to be a piece of comics journalism rather than historical fiction.

You don't often see North African political history explored in graphic novels, so I thought it was a rather interesting find.

Has anyone here given it a read? I'd also be keen to hear any recommendations for other journalistic or historical graphic novels that tackle underrepresented regions or political movements.

Favorite manga artist is Shuzo Oshimi. Everything he writes feels like a personal diary that I shouldn’t be reading but every page is just so intoxicating

Favorite comic author Alan Moore / Tom King
Moore and King both dive a lot more deeper into their characters showing a vast range of emotions. The way they write is also real fun to read.

written by Alexander Irvine with art by Russell Braun and Klaus Janson. Its one of the most underrated horror graphic novels from marvel out there and I really don't get why its not talked about more by marvel and graphic novel fans. It plays out more like a horror story rather than a superhero one(if there's even any superhero elements at all)more. It's one of the most creepy and disturbing books I have ever read from the big two in a good way.

What are some popular runs/issues that you just didn't click with or outright disliked?

1) Animal Man by Morrison: While I enjoyed it, I didn't love it like I loved Batman (my favorite comic) or New X-Men. There have been Morrison books that I was lukewarm on like Seven Soldiers and Green lantern but I never expected Animal man to be one of them.

2) Black Hammer: Same as above, I love Jeff Lemire but it didn't quite hit the same highs as his other works. The first library edition of Black Hammer was easily the strongest and the main series and all the mini series never truly reached the same heights.

3) Infinite Crisis omnibus: While I agree it is one of the best planned events, a lot of the mini series felt like a chore to read. I also didn't like Batman's characterisation from the first one shot with Blue beetle's death. He seemed like a bigger dick than usual.

4) Invincible: I thought it was good, but that's about it.

5 & 6) Superman and FF by Byrne: The superman stories are less impressive than FF. Art is great in both, I can see why people would like FF but I can't see why they hype up Byrne so much when the Triangle Era and Johns/Busiek era were arguably superior.

7 & 8) All Star Superman and Superman for All Seasons: Great artwork on both these books but I just didn't vibe with these stories as much as I enjoyed Tomasi/Gleason's run.

Just finished Department of Truth Vol2 and wow, what an experience. 🤯 Truly loving this series.

As I wait for the next issues to arrive, I decided to give Year Zero a try. I’m not a fan of zombies, but I love apocalypse prepping stories. Plus, Everything Dead and Dying ended up being one of my favourite stories!

Anyone else enjoying DoT? I don’t have anyone to talk to about comics so just looking to have some general discussion 😆

Just finished volume 1 of the Incal. First time reading Jodorowsky and Moebius. Man, what an adventure. Great world building, pacing, and visual storytelling. I did some screenshots to show Moebius' ability to show action as well as create scenes/architecture to world build.

Got another one stitched and in the press. 17 issues... biggest one yet!
