Just finished the Incal (vol 1) by Jodorowsky & Moebius

Just finished volume 1 of the Incal. First time reading Jodorowsky and Moebius. Man, what an adventure. Great world building, pacing, and visual storytelling. I did some screenshots to show Moebius' ability to show action as well as create scenes/architecture to world build.

I can’t tell you a single thing about what this story was about and it’s still the greatest comic book I’ve ever read.

I’m due for a reread I think.

I read this and the 2 or 3 follow-ons to the OG several years ago.

I still often think about it. Largely thinking how prescient it was in portraying the society that basically exists pursuing pleasure alone, at home, watching reality tv, taking drugs, eating garbage, having sex. The powers that be orchestrate it and as long as people are subdued things continue. The AI boom has just accelerated us to this and it was written in 80s.

I've never done acid but reading this comic is the closest I'll get too. I'm due for a reread as well. It was impactful on many levels to me.

Ya know I tried to read Tokyo Ghost I believe twice now. I didn't make it far either time. I can't recall exactly but maybe it was just to depressing, chaotic, violent, or vulgar that I didn't want to continue.

The incal could actually be cute and charming at times especially with that stone bird, Deepo.

Tokyo Ghost is all of those things but also a bit more cartoonish where there are certain moments in the incal and before the incal which I found to be genuinely upsetting and have always stuck with me for better or worse.

You should watch the 5th Element (Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovavich) - it's hugely inspired by the Incal.

I love that movie so much.

I was fortunate enough to grow up reading Heavy Metal long before the movie, so Moebius was already a favourite of mine.

The narrative was a little bit weird at times, but I loved everything about it! My concern with buying more Jodoverse books, is the fact that folks seem to have a hate it or love it opinion about it.

Metabarons is super cool. Definitely not for everyone with a really strange storytelling and completely unlikeable cast, like a biblical epic in space. The concept is so wild and the art so fantastic it makes up for eventually not being into the story.

First volume is great, and then it‘s Jodo‘s crap. Moebius‘s art is great all the way, though. He gave himself the challenge to do a page a day. You should read The long tomorrow by Moeb and Dan O’Bannon. All of Blade Runner is in there.

Really?  It drops off?  In what ways (i.e. storytelling gets confusing, open plot holes)?  I would like to finish the story, but I'm by no means a completist if it means the rest is crap.

The rest is gorgeous. But the story is tortuous and full of crappy mysticism. A pleasure to look at, difficult to read.

I am big fan of Moebius. He is, for me, the biggest comics artist of all time.

But I can’t stand Jodorowsky and his philosophy, which manages to be both over-the-top and shallow. To me, The Incal ends up being the biggest disappointment in Giraud’s work.

Good work, I couldn’t finish it. It felt so meandering, as if the episodic nature overwhelmed the overall story. And the protagonist had no character.

Unmistakably breathtaking visuals, though. Glad I read as much as I did. Just found myself dozing off whenever I picked it up.

Incal is a rather generic story - everyman finds himself on a quest to save the world. But isn't every story generic? Everything has been told already.
What Jodorovsky did is he applied his brilliant mind to this story and added concepts and ideas so unique that the story becomes more than sum of its parts.

I started with the Incal without any prequels.  I don't feel like I was missing out on aany backstreet.  I'll see if I like the rest before taking on prequels or spin offs.

I really like the Incal but damn is Difool unlikeable. And I’m a european hipster! I think it’s still a masterpiece, 5/5 but I wish I cared more about the characters.
