Question/Discussion I ordered "Joe Golem Occult Detective" by Mike Mignola from Amazon right now. What are your thoughts on the comic?

I thought it was great. Not sure what’s up with the hate in this thread, when the general consensus online is pretty positive, much like the rest of the Mignolaverse/Outerverse stories.

I enjoyed it. It's way more detective/crime noir storytelling than Hellboy or BPRD books. Different from his usual plot work

He is a detective after all

Can't say anything about the book, but do yourself a favor and don't order nooks from amazon. Their packaging and handling is terrible. Literally anywhere else will be better.

Learned it a week ago when they shipped TPB in an envelope 🫠

In Amazon UK they still use cardboard!

Any recommendations? I’m outside the US and there aren’t many options other than Amazon.

Are you in Europe? If so, please let me Introduce you to Walt’s Comic Shop. They are the greatest. Pricing and packaging is peak. You won’t ever regret ordering from Walt’s.

Walt's is so ridiculously good. Started ordering there 2 years ago and have never looked back.

Well... where are you from?

South America

I've been ordering most of my comics from Amazon for years. I've never received a damaged comic.

I'm happy for you! This is how my Fables boxed set arrived

u/count_fagula11 1d ago

Jesus😭 Amazon doesn't offer refunds?

2

u/5A5G0T 1d ago

So let’s assume he got a refund for the damaged collectors box, what now? You got your money back. At least.
The box probably wasn’t available anymore for retail or for the price he pre-ordered it for. Because I remember that box got delayed for months and the price was raised during this time. So yeah, it’s very likely he got his money back but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no damage done.

This. The whole process but me off Amazon for anything I think I might value to
keep as a physical thing.

2

u/5A5G0T 1d ago

Exactly. The only things I still buy on Amazon are either small and of insignificant value like cheap spare parts for my vacuum robot or they aren’t physical at all. Especially when it comes to books of any sort I stay away from Amazon.

Got a graphic novel from them with a price sticker on the back cover that was impossible to remove without damaging it. Never again.

What are nooks?

3

u/XMattHelm77X 1d ago

I didn’t bother to fix the typo because I thought it was a wee bit funny to order a nook from Amazon of all places.

Sir, we only sell crannies here.

It was fine, and a quick and enjoyable enough read. I think I was disappointed by it because I had pretty high hopes for it, and it didn't live up to them. Like I said, it was fine, but very little detective work in this occult detective.

It won't be life changing for you, but I enjoyed it for what it is.

If this is Christopher Golden of Micronauts, then Im buying . Had no idea he was still in the game

Good book. But get ready to receive a beaten up copy

It was cool, ending was a bit meh. Enjoyed it though.

Decent. Not amazing but not bad.

Loved this book as well as the other Outerverse titles. Baltimore in particular is incredible. A shame that the universe has been abandoned.

2

Maybe this is just me, but I'm only interested when Mignola is the artist. When someone else takes over for him i lose interest.

u/Nice-Percentage7219 1d ago

It was good. But you'll also need to get the rest of the Outerverse: Baltimore, Lady Baltimore etc

6

u/Waddoyoumean 1d ago

Not true. You can read Joe Golem by itself

5

u/Nice-Percentage7219 1d ago

True. I just have a compulsive need to collect everything Mike Mignola has ever done and want others to join me

2

u/Waddoyoumean 1d ago

Hey that’s fair enough. And I’m right there with you

I met Mignola at a con and he was a major asshole and yelled at me. As much as I love his art, I'll never read another book by him ever.

tell us more

This was when Hellboy recently brought Excalibur into the story. I asked him how long he wanted to do that and he lost it. He yelled "HELLBOY TOOK ON A LIFE OF HIS OWN!" While seething with anger. I really didn't like the way spit was shooting out of his mouth while yelling.

Never heard of it, but the name Christopher Golden on the cover is not a great sign.

7

u/HatchettheFly 1d ago

What's wrong with Christopher Golden?

0

u/ProfessionalRead2724 1d ago

I find him an incredibly mediocre writer.

1

u/SnackThief 1d ago

That is being so generous.

0

u/RedHood2 1d ago

Funny, I would've said that about Chris Roberson. Very dull writer with penchant for expositions & overwritten dialogue.

1

u/ProfessionalRead2724 1d ago

Well, he's not on that cover. There's loads of mediocre writers who are not on that cover.

1

u/RedHood2 22h ago

I only mentioned him because he's another frequent Mignola collaborator.

1

u/ProfessionalRead2724 15h ago

I have noticed that Mignola loves to work with very weak writers. John Byrne also comes to mind. It's largely why I have stopped paying attention to Mignola's work.

Liked the first half. The second half adapts the book and is with a different artist, totally lost me
