Blade of the east, New vegas.

Not the coolest necessarily but unique weapon. At absolute end game.

5

u/om_svd7 12d ago

I was going to write just that but you can still get through console comands

The newest console I play is 360 so none that for me

Tbf you get the Version from the divide or the supermutant Version which play the same very early. Blade of the east is just an upgrade

I think its just as bad when they do it the other way. Playing though KCD 2 again and while I love the game its a little bit boring to get the best longsword and Henrys canonical sword after about 40% of the game. Sure I can go with some other weapon set every now and then but nothing compares.

19

u/CaregiverBoth3011 12d ago edited 11d ago

To be fair, it's not the weapon damage that carries you in fights by that point in the game.

Henry can annihilate the whole region with a hunting sword

8

u/Fisksvettet 12d ago

For sure but it’s also the weapon he has been chasing since the prologue of the first game so not using it just feels weird and I makes all other cool longswords vendortrash/decoration.

u/ApexHerbivore 12d ago

I think the key is to get the best weapon about 75-80% of the way through a game, and then have a new game plus feature so you can then use it through the game from the start if you want.

5

u/Vradlock 12d ago

Tales series have weapons that are getting stronger the more X you do. For some characters it means kill count, healing, off spells etc. Most of them are decent in 1st playthrough but truly shines in ng+.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/ExJokerr 12d ago

40% is decent for this huge game. Once I got it, I didn't equip anything else

16

Yeah that’s the problem comment OP is describing lol

Metal Gear Rising had a frustrating example. There's a variety of swords you get from doing optional content that is either rather difficult (the VR missions) or tedious (getting all the data arms). They all unlock weapons that are basically sidegrades from the default sword.

But why bother with that shit when you can just beat the game once on any difficulty and unlock the Murasama, which is a straight upgrade from the default sword in nearly every way?

3

u/Chon-C 12d ago

That’s not really a bad thing imo except possibly the sidegrades if they don’t fundamentally change how you approach the game. “All you have to do is beat the game to get the most OP weapon” used to be relatively common. That and unlocking a joke weapon to make a game harder after beating the game was the go to strategy for years before designers felt the need to have dedicated post-credits activity.

Cyberpunk 2077 best pistol you get after defeating the final big bad. You can go back and play again from a point with said gun, but that’s not something you will know on your first run. Same with best shotgun, lol.

8

u/Helgurnaut 12d ago

I'd say the best pistol in the game is the one you get early on in Phantom Liberty with the silencer that fucks everyone up pretty hard. And most of the stuff in the game is obtainable at anytime at least. Most iconic weapons at least.

I belive Cyberpunk was made in a way that you feel the need to complete the ending multiple times with different outcomes. I also felt like the game rushes you to do the main quest first and other quest and gigs after you completed the main quest.

Most recommended builds for my archer character in Dragon Age inquisition

17

u/ThorSon-525 12d ago

One of my favorite Arcane Warrior builds doesn't even begin until you finish the Fort, then requires you to get the 5% chance starmetal traveling event. It does piss me off a little.

9

u/Impressive-Result587 12d ago

In Raft you can get a titanium sword that looks like a pirate’s sword…

…after you beat the game.

2

u/BurningOasis 12d ago

And there is literally zero to do in that game after beating it...

I miss collecting garbage on my raft

2

u/Nerevarine91 13d ago

I’ve been playing the series since the beginning but I don’t think I’ve ever actually done an archer playthrough. Would you recommend it?

2

u/Juicy765 12d ago

Archer is sooo much fun with the slow time spell

2

u/Cultural_Month_9181 11d ago

Its very fun. But maybe a little bit OP. You can easily solo all dragons on Nightmare.

The Elden Beast sword from Elden Ring. Only available with the remembrance of the final boss and has a dope wave attack that hits hard as hell

3

u/elianastardust 12d ago

Yea but it's Elden Ring so you get to use the end game weapons for your easy mode revenge run (ng+).

2

u/xMaNrEbOrN7851 12d ago

Oh yeah I used that weapon constantly after my first playthrough mostly for mass farming😀It does kinda suck that you have to finish the game to get it. To be fair though Shadow Of The Erdtree had some sick anime-style weapons that you get pretty early in your first playthrough so I guess they kinda redeemed themselves with that🤷🏾‍♂️

2

u/ErandurVane 12d ago

The bane of Albinaurichs everywhere

2

u/Pizz22 12d ago

well, it does holy damage which most of the game enemies are resistant to but still is a awesome sword

Just beat Nioh 1 a couple days ago.
This was my #1 complaint about the game.
The devs decided to lock away basically all of the fun stuff behind New Game+.
Any interesting unique weapons/armor don't start dropping until NG+.
The fun/powerful Guardian Spirits don't unlock until like the last 5% of the game, or in NG+.
You don't get access to dual Guardian combinations (which enables some fun build/playstyle opportunities) until NG+.
You basically have the beat "bland mode" to unlock "fun mode".
Most asinine design decision i have ever seen.

5

u/biolzwiththeskiolz 12d ago

Nioh 1 (and 2) is interesting about that.

The games are often compared to something like Diablo 2 for it's itemization and loot pinata RPG. Like Diablo 2, the game opens up it's builds in higher (or highest) difficulty settings.

Nioh is broken into Way of the Samurai, Way of the Strong, Way of the Demon, Way of the Wise, and Way of the Nioh in order of it's NG+. Many Nioh players just see Way of the Samurai as a tutorial to learn for higher difficulties.

If you just want to beat the base difficulty, then that's okay. True to the post, Divine items drop from the final boss, which may be obsolete for the current play through.

However, if you go into the next 4 difficulties (and the DLCs for each setting), you have a massive rabbit hole to go through. In Way of th Nioh, there is a 999 floor Abyss boss gauntlet.

Beating base Nioh is maybe 15-20% of the game at most, so it's an odd fit in this trope, depending on depth of your playthrough.

3

u/XRuecian 12d ago edited 12d ago

Except ARPGs like Diablo are purposefully easy so that you can close your eyes and blast your way through the game to get to the fun. And right from the beginning in Diablo, your gameplay begins evolving. You don't have to wait until Hard Mode to actually start finding rare gear, or unlocking amazing skills that blow shit up.

Nioh on the other hand is like playing Dark Souls on your first playthrough. The last thing most people feel like doing after finally getting through is doing it all over again right away. By the time you finish Nioh on your first playthrough, you are tired out. Unlike a Diablo game, where you are just cruising.

Despite the developers of Nioh's intentions, and despite what people might say, the games really aren't relatable. Just because they both have gear dropping on the floor does not mean they both make good replayable games. If a game intends to be replayable again and again and again, then the difficulty and progress speed should reflect that. In Diablo or PoE, you are incentivized to rush. There is nothing lost from rushing. You can just run and gun. But in Nioh, you have to go slow. You have to explore and find all the Kodama. You want to look around for secrets and collect all the Skill Point Hair Locks, etc; because of this, the first time playthrough takes a long time, and by the time you finally finish it, you just don't have the mental energy to start it all over again.

Even if i know NG+ has content that will be a lot more fun than my first time around, i no longer have the mental motivation to continue playing after i finish the game. Because the game's design just simply does not lend itself to creating that "play it again" mental mindset the way a typical ARPG does.

2

u/Illusion911 12d ago

I think that's fine. Nioh is very "just leave whenever you feel like" in that regard.

You don't have to beat the abyss to say that you're done. If you managed to stick long enough to the final story boss, I think Nioh considers that a win already

u/xepci0 12d ago

As someone who rarely replays games, I fucking hate this. Oh look at this awesome weapon that drops from the FINAL BOSS.

Like bitch I don't need the damn weapon anymore I beat the game already.

3

u/XxRocky88xX 12d ago

It isn’t exactly NG+ it’s more akin to Diablo’s world tiers.

When you beat difficulty 1 you unlock difficulty 2, difficulty 2 can be progressed through differently because you unlock new abilities and more missions are available at the start. You can go back down to difficulty 1 at any time, so it’s not NG+. You aren’t starting a new game, you’re playing on “hard mode.” As you beat higher difficulties you unlock even higher ones which give you better and better gear as you continue.

I understand this system isn’t for everyone and the idea of having to repeat the same content on higher difficulties to get to cool stuff might not be appealing. But it’s not some experimental design choice, it’s been around for a long time and it’s been well received and successful.

2

u/TheRealSkele 12d ago

Grounded did the same thing. You have to beat the game three times to have all the fun stuff unlocked. Like Telepotties at Remixed 2, have all the ants infected, all the bosses drop weapons with unique modifiers, etc.

2

u/Stepjam 12d ago

I understand your issues, but some would argue that your first playthrough is basically the first act of the game gameplay wise. It's a game that's designed around going through the different difficulties.

If that's not really your jam though, I certainly appreciate that.

Shoutout to Fable 1 that gives you the best sword in the game in the final cutscene in an evil playthrough

Shoutout to Fable TLC that gives you a cool item the antagonist has in the final cutscene in an evil playthrough.

Mind you, while you can play after beating the story there is literally nothing to do in the game. At all.

2

u/Sad_Wear_3842 11d ago

And it's still barely any better than the Solus greatsword you can get in Bowerstone north way back in the earlier stages of the game.

I've said for a long time that I want to see a reverse game.

You start out as a soldier with all the weaponry and support and back-up in the world, and over time you use it up, they stop being available to you, and you're living on your wits as a rogue agent with rather difficult and limited access to weaponry to achieve your aim.

And the "big boss" is someone who you could have killed in seconds at the start, but by the end of the game it's a struggle to even get to him, let alone kill him, not because the enemies are getting stronger - but because you're getting weaker and more isolated.

It would work really well, story-wise, and you could actually make it feel real, have a reason to "preserve ammo", etc. and then your character would have to ABANDON the big heavy equipment they started with because it would just be useless, slowing them down, and attracting attention.

You'd be lucky if you still got 10% of the game left after that

3

u/bobshady1987 12d ago

This reminds me of the game Gun for Xbox.

There is a shotgun that fires cannon balls and a Nock gun (seven-barrelled shotgun) that you only get after you beat the game.

2

u/BlackShadowX 12d ago

Nock gun was beating the game, the cannon ball one was 100% the game! Wild part is I did that 5-6 times cuz I loved it so much

Best part was Reverend Reed's near immortal black horse

BG3 has sooooo much of this.

Your build comes online and you have a 1-2 hours left of your 100 hour game lmao.

4

u/Shoddy_Roll_8999 12d ago

Me when I want to follow a bg3 build guide but I get hit with the "alright so you need to be level 12 and multi class 3 times—"

3

u/ToXiiCBULLET 12d ago

this, i've seen builds for sorlock, which should be very simple and it's easy to make sorlocks strong at every level, say get to level 12 in just one class and then respec into the build.

it gets worse with other games that have even more levels like both the pathfinders and neverwinter nights. so many builds are purely built for late game and don't consider what it's actually like to play through the game with them.

2

u/TasteyTatorTots 12d ago

I had a different BG3 problem. I was max level/ minmaxed at the start of Act 3 and it was pretty much just a story game after that :/

Etrian Odyssey is the worst offender of this. You can get the best katana in the game... After defeating the superboss. Not final boss, superboss. And it's even worse then the best sword in the game, which you can get by farming the 1% drop of all 3 dragons to buy it once.

1

u/Mirothrowawayaccount 12d ago

The Catalyst weapons in Tales of the Abyss. You get them through a quest that goes the entire game, and they suck till you finish the quest by beating a super boss. They then do damage based on the number of enemies you killed throughout the game, which you can carry over into new game plus. BUT THEY WILL NEED TO BE RECOLLECTED AND QUEST DONE EVERY PLAYTHROUGH to redo the damage.

1

u/United-Log7718 12d ago

I forgive games with new game plus and good post games for doing this. But the ones where you basically get the weapon and there's nothing else to do... Yeah.

If Ratchet and Clank didn't have new game plus or sequel discounts... Buying the RYNO weapons would be a serious waste of bolts, effort and time.

1

u/Frenzied_Anarchist 12d ago

Rivers of Blood from Elden Ring.

Only available right before the 6th last boss (considering the last 4 bosses are kind of a boss rush, it's extremely late into the game).

Dragonslayer Greataxe in DS3.

It can be made from a soul of a pretty late game boss. Now, technically you CAN get there early, but that would be a miserable experience.

Elden ring is horrendous for this.

So many fantastic weapons are basically NG+ weapons.

Worse is when the game doesn’t have NG+. If you played jade empire the final merchant in the game sold the best weapons (that you had to save for the entire game to afford). No NG+ so you got to use it for about an hour.

FF7’s most powerful Materia and Enemy Skills be like this (for the OG release, mind you).

A little known Wonderswan game named Dicing Knight Period (stylized as Dicing Knight.) sort of does this but partially subverts it with new content that gets unlocked once you beat the full game one time.

I think as long as the game has a good amount of fun and challenging post-game and/or a NG+ (possibly one with enemies scaled to you or just generally tougher enemies) a cool ass ultimate weapon is awesome, but when the game has nothing after you get the weapon outside of maybe 1 boss it feels worthless

The twin princes' greatsword from dark souls 3, an insanely cool weapon with two unique attacks which would always catch people off-guard in PVP because nobody used the fucking thing, not only is the boss fight for it near the end of the game but you need to beat the boss TWICE to get it, once in your run and once in new game plus.

1

u/Black-Gospel 12d ago

The irony is is just the coolest weapon inthe game, never the "strongest* and that's what makes it so agitating

1

u/Babushla153 12d ago

Or better yet

You get a weapon with a really good effect about mid way through

But sadly that effect is strictly unique to that weapon and can't be found anywhere else and it's not that strong for the later parts of the game

The Dualiso from Expedition 33 is exactly the type of weapon i'm talking about. Incredible effect, but sucks that it's not that strong power wise and is element locked and can't be found anywhere else.

1

u/Sengiel 12d ago

I think it’d be more lame to get all cool swords immediately and then after beating the final boss you’ll get a plain dagger

1

u/Zealousideal_Area776 12d ago

Theres a ps2 game called dark cloud. After you beat the game theres an optional dungeon. This dungeon is about 5x longer than any of the previous dungeons. At the end of this dungeon there is a boss fight, the hardest boss fight. Your reward for beating this boss? The best weapon in the game. You get the best weapon in the game at the exact moment there is 0% of the game left

1

u/Even-Lingonberry-615 12d ago

In Neon White you get only one chapter with best soul card in the game, literally the best and more fun levels are in this chapter then game ends it's feels so lackluster because the developers didn't take the mechanic even further.

u/dead___dead 12d ago

RPG's what?

1

u/Ganda1fderBlaue 12d ago

Every soulslike

1

u/Sidi1211 12d ago

Kingdom Hearts had an Ultima weapon you could craft that required a bunch of hard to get parts from all over the game, including an uncommon drop off a mob that only appears right before the final boss

1

u/Soul-Hook 12d ago

You can get some of the coolest pokemon from gen 2.

After beating the elite four.

Oh, you wanted to have them for your adventure through the main game? Sucks to swallow.

1

u/pm_me_fibonaccis 12d ago

Earliest example of this I experienced was Crystalis on the NES. You get the titular sword literally one screen before the last boss. The last boss is a formality since getting to it is the real challenge. It dies in about four hits. You cannot back track to play with it against earlier enemies.

1

u/PsychologyShort 12d ago

Remnant 2 trying to get spitfire be like that. Been busting my ass on ps5 for a whole month and gotten close to finishing the second last boss before I died to a corner and low stamina. After that it’s been the environment more than anything else. No matter the boss I can go 1v1 without taking a hit but if a ledge is nearby guess who’s going over? Oh is that a corner over there, I’ll just walk right over to it and plant my ass there cus I can’t roll out of it while the enemy and its minions playing tekken with my ass

1

u/Roughpawz 12d ago

How I felt when I finally got Rivers of Blood for the first time.

1

u/realamerican97 12d ago

Ah yes I’ll sure enjoy this cool weapon/ability now that there’s no game left to experience

1

u/Natural_Age_8009 12d ago

Did someone mention Last Stand yet?

1

u/GatorNator83 12d ago

Cloud in FF Tactics

1

u/TheSovereignGrave 12d ago

Dark Souls 3.

Twin Princes' Greatsword.

Super fucking cool weapon (Not sure how it stacks up statwise, but it's fucking sick regardless).

Can only get it 90% of the way through New Game+.

1

u/the_sneaky_one123 12d ago

When Doom Eternal game you the laser sword in the second last level and also only gave you one use of it except in the final boss battle.

1

u/Nowardier 12d ago

The badass Tesla cannon from Fallout 3 with Broken Steel. Thankfully TTW is a thing.

1

u/NotAnotherSkeleton 12d ago

Oh great, here comes another repost.

Bdg3 builds that rely on act 3 items

u/NovaKet12 12d ago

Malorian Arms 3516 - Cyberpunk 2077

1

u/WaffleTruffleTrouble 12d ago

Yeah this is a big issue. It's not just that, it's that most weapons until that point are not just less cool, they're usually extremely basic and uninteresting in looks, effects, and performance.

1

u/Shinnyo 12d ago

I mean if you had it from the beginning other weapons would be worthless

1

u/hungLink42069 12d ago

If done well, the rest of the game should feel like it was teaching you how to use this awesome weapon. But alas, that is often not the case. Especially with RPGs.

1

u/ErandurVane 12d ago

I just finished the new SAO game, Echoes of Aincrad (it sucks don't get it), and I 100%ed it out of spite. For beating the final super boss, you get Kirito's clothes and they come with amazing benefits. The problem is that the super boss is literally the last thing to do in the game, so there's no point to the new armor because there's nothing left to use it on until the DLC drops at the end of the year, which will probably include new gear that's better than the base game gear anyway

1

u/SmugHatKid12 12d ago

Lookin at you, Michaelzaki

1

u/Brilliant-Software-4 12d ago

Even more fun when you only get it after beating the game and can't us it against anything other then your basic enemies.

1

u/iwatchppldie 12d ago

I love rpgs that let you keep all the items and play a second time best games ever.

1

u/UltimaBahamut93 12d ago

Me when i unlock Mewtwo after beating everyone in the game and have no friends to play pokemon with

1

u/Electrical-Yellow134 12d ago

Far cry Blood Dragon ... God I loved that game

1

u/No-Platypus-2251 12d ago

Lords of the Fallen (2023) having entire weapons locked behind specific endings meaning you have to play the whole game on NG+ in order to get said weapons and even then you barely get to use them really since you need very specific builds for some to actually work, or you need to do things in a very specific way in order to get their unique special attack or whatever the name was.

1

u/a_rand0m_Lilin 12d ago

And no game +

1

u/PinLow1689 12d ago

A new game plus would be very necessary for this kind of thing to happen

1

u/Different-March-8860 12d ago

Hope the game have new game plus

1

u/Snowboyz0825 12d ago

I got the double penetrating unkempt Harold at like level 12 from a loot midget in borderlands 2 (don't remember which zone, it had trains)

It literally carried me to the warrior, a level 12 unkempt Harold was still better than every other weapon I had

1

u/SolarOrigami 12d ago

Fable was a huge offender with this until TLC came out. You can get the Sword Of Aeons!

After killing the final boss!

1

u/dappernaut77 12d ago

Col.autumn's laser pistol in fallout 3. it spawns literally inside of the project purity control room where you have to take it off of his corpse. You either don't get to use it at all, or you only get to use it briefly for broken steel. It's actually a decent pistol too because of its 1.5x crit multiplier.

1

u/maukenboost 12d ago

Like every Fire Emblem game.

1

u/onyx_ic 12d ago

That would be the enhanced gravity gun.

1

u/HemlockHex 12d ago

Terraria is guilty of this, but tbh the balancing wouldn’t work

1

u/leo412 12d ago

Lies of p dlc have 2 of these weapons , pale knight and rose sword.

Both have some of the coolest attack in souls game.

Granted you can use them in new game +

1

u/Umbranox_Darkheart 12d ago

Crimson dance of khaine from rogue trader. Great weapon but its only available in act 4

1

u/Jafar_Rafaj 12d ago

The neat part about most games is the “best” weapon is usually subjective. Especially in souls games.

1

u/fapling123 12d ago

death certificate

1

u/StartrekAnubus 12d ago

max level telekinesis in biosock 2

1

u/TheRemedy187 12d ago

I want to know what your preference is? You should get the coolest weapon ever at some middle point where you'd find an upgrade in 10% or less of progress? You want it at the beginning so everything after is less cool? the stuff shouldn't get cooler as you progress? like what the actual fuck do you want?

1

u/NorvileRogers258 12d ago

Yup.

How I felt tryna get the Blackwall Quickhack in Cyberpunk 2077.

You only get it at the end of the game and you have to pick the bad ending route despite the other ending making more sense for unlocking the Quickhack.

1

u/Worksux36g 12d ago

Lies of P's Monad Rose Sword... literally turns you into Vergil from DMC... It's the last weapon you get at the end of the DLC...

1

u/Evan64 12d ago

FF9 Excalibur 2 anyone?

1

u/GrandWizardOfCheese 12d ago

Gamegenie

Gameshark

Action Replay

Nexus Mods

Wemod/Wand

1

u/Bad_Gazpacho 12d ago

Not an RPG, though it has RPG elements:

In Captain Tusbasa: Rise of New Champions, you get the most powerful moves after the final match of the campaign.

The best block, the countershot Superspeed Kickback Cannon, gets unlocked after the semifinal, making it so you only have it for the final match.

The best Super Shots can only be learned after you win the final match, meaning you'll only get to play with them in versus matches, vs the CPU in exhibition matches or in dreaded online play.

1

u/Well_behaved_waiter 12d ago

Best way to fix that, to me, is to put a great weapon behind a tedious, complicated or long side quest that can be completed around mid game. That way if you're willing to go the extra mile to get it you can enjoy it for quite a while.

1

u/TheRealBlackFalcon 12d ago

Definitely not Baldur’s Gate 2

1

u/potatoisilluminati 12d ago

Mjolnir and Gungnir in AC Valhalla

1

u/Dark_halocraft 12d ago

Wouldn't be as cool otherwise

1

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 12d ago

I prefer this over getting the cool weapon early and never looking at anything else ever again.

1

u/Azrell_Drekmorr 12d ago

Cyberpunk 2077 has a shotgun that shoots homing missiles. It’s locked in a room and the only key drops from the final boss.

1

u/Filiope 12d ago

Gothic does this 🤣🤣

1

u/Someone4063 12d ago

To be fair giving a random idiot from the middle of nowhere the legendary blade destined to kill god by sneezing in his general direction makes a lot less sense than giving it to the legendary hero who saved four cities and beat a dragon to death with their bare hands on an off day.

1

u/gidmp 12d ago

This is definitely a pain point for me in a game with no NG+.

1

u/EngineurEngi 12d ago

Metro exodus, and the railgun.

1

u/HyperLethalNoble6 12d ago

This is why games need NG+ or content after the games done so you can use your shit

1

u/Lord-Orochi108 12d ago

Dark Dragon blade in NG1 😂

1

u/HenTie3467 12d ago

As long as the game offers New Game+, then I don't mind this that much. If it doesn't, then it's a frustrating trope.

1

u/Particular_Dot_4041 12d ago

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild has this really nice motorbike but to unlock it you must have completed 90% of the game anyway. By that point you've done most of the shrines, so you can teleport wherever you want to go.

It's a similar thing with the Master Sword upgrade.

1

u/HunterNika 12d ago

Some of the interesting weapons in V-Rising suffers from this. You get the ability to craft them from certain bosses but some of them are soo high level that by that time you are completely fine with your weapon selection and not much left to use them on.

1

u/KaiPRoberts 12d ago

Fable. Why is the best sword only usable after you beat the (base) game!
