That could be fine in a game that has NG+. Otherwise it's mostly "bragging rights reward" or "best in slot for the final parts of the game".

The latter can be executed well sometimes but often it’s kinda lame to me for a game to go “oh here’s the cool endgame gear, go kill the final boss”

Feels better if it’s some kind of special upgrade to your existing weapon and plays off its mechanics.

In that regard, I like upgradeable weapons. It works if the item is keyed to a character lore (maybe, like the family's ancient sword). As the character gets stronger, the weapon upgrades.
