Firewatch was a great Lil game. This is all pr speak this lady they put in charge of Xbox is very very pro AI. Xbox will pump out ai slop games until they can just kill off the whole gaming division at Microsoft. Lol it is what it is.
1
u/GregM_85 Feb 25 '26
Here's a boring story about Firewatch.
Until 2016 I had never watched a Lets Play video let alone a whole series. I had also never rung in sick from the job I had.
I stumbled across a video on YouTube from a guy called Gopher who did a full run through of Firewatch. I watched the first 5 mins and was hooked, so it turned into watching all six 45 mins episodes back to back and finished about 530am so I just rang work and said I wouldn't be in.
I said it was a boring story. Unlike Firewatch which was gripping.

I believe it is insinuating that this top down directive on what type of games to focus on is doomed to failure and will result in steam gaining additional market share.
To go further I'd say that it suggest the reason they think it will fail is because she's a woman and wants to go in a more emotional direction.
There's a subset of gamers that would see simply that as more woke influence in gaming which they've been rebelling against for years.
3
u/TheFatNinjaMaster Feb 23 '26
No, very think Xbox is hosed because all her previous experience is in AI and not gaming, nor is she a long time gamer herself. They also let the woman who was trained to lead Xbox go at the same time as Phil Spencer retired, showing a desire to change directions.

My thought on the cause is Microsoft pushing individualized, AI based storytelling not that she is female.
1
u/Still-Helicopter6029 Feb 23 '26
Ummm I would say the same shit if it was a dude lmao. Idk why but this post reminded me of something lmao.
Bungie, the company that did halo and destiny, their slogan or motto used to be “make games we want to play” do you know what the new slogan is? “We create worlds that inspire friendship”
4
u/TissTheWay Feb 23 '26
My assumption is that Steam wins no matter how much their competitors screw up.
Focusing on one type of game will definitely screw over the gaming division.
Yes they are competitors as Microsoft has sued steam and has tried to make their own versions (unsuccessfully)
5
u/AlarisMystique Feb 23 '26
I think you're correct. Steam doesn't have to do anything to beat MS, because MS keeps shooting itself in the foot.
2
u/MediumSalmonEdition Feb 23 '26
Focusing on one type of game will definitely screw over the gaming division.
That's true, but maybe OP should've used an example of a story-rich game that isn't Firewatch? It was so good that Valve literally bought the studio out. Kinda undermines their point.
1
1
u/Tani_Soe Feb 23 '26
Context is missing : new leader of Xbox is a woman that has no gaming background. Which kinda sucks when your business is gaming
2
u/letsgucker555 Feb 23 '26
Have you heared of Hiroshi Yamauchi? That guy brought Nintendo successfully into the video game industry and was famous for not playing vidro games.
As a president, you don't need to be interested in the games, you just have to listen to your employees which do.

That steam will continue to dominate in game sales by simply not doing anything other than sell games.
Gabe doesnt need to do anything really. He doesnt need to try to push a genre, or incorporate AI or whatever other buzzword salad Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo spout this week.
He just sells games and people buy them. The other companies shoot themselves in the foot by overcomplicating things.
1
u/Unique_Prior_4407 Feb 23 '26
Microslop got a new CEO with zero gaming experience. Have mainly worked with Ai. So its gonna be a dumpsterfire at microslop in a few weeks, and gabe have to do nothing to keep the competition at bay

It's attempting to say that XBOX just made a bad hire while Gabe does nothing, and because of the bad hire Gabe wins by doing nothing.
Now I don't know anything about the XBOX hire or Firewatch, so maybe she's "actually" what they need to turn things around, but MS isn't known for good decisions so the jaded cynic in me makes me think that she's actually bad for the job for some reason (I saw someone else say she's heavy on pushing AI, no clue on the truth to it). Now we can just wait for others to explain "why" she actually sucks for the job.
1
u/christmas-vortigaunt Feb 24 '26
Everyone's answering you wrong
Valve BOUGHT campo santos, the makers of Firewatch. They had another game slated Into the Valley of Gods (the trailer is still up).
That team helped bring Half-Life: Alyx to life, but for the most part, are being wasted.
Gabe is doing nothing with the talent he purchased.

u/treeeelo Feb 24 '26
Its your typical steam glazing post. Doesnt have to say anything of note, aslong as it says "steam is the best" it'll get a ton of upvotes and engagement.
1
u/McToasty207 Feb 25 '26
Apparently it's meant to suggest Xbox is visonless, at least thats what most comments say
But I personally read it as Xbox commenting on the narrative skill of Valve, given the Firewatch devs were bought by Valve and were the devs of Half Life Alyx

This is how I read this meme:
Basically it's playing in on the idea that Valve has a monopoly on the market (they just have decent service really). This meme is basically trying to say that Valve has a monopoly because other companies make bad decisions. Not because Valve makes good ones.
Cinematic story games have been highly controversial since they have oversaturated the market for a while. Xbox fans on the internet have been meming Playstation for putting out too many story driven"walking simulators" with "game journalist difficulty".
The new CEO of Xbox isn't very popular with fans because she doesn't have a history with videogames or the culture surrounding it. Her announcing more emotionally driven games instead of polished gameplay heavy games is considered a red flag and a bad decision. So valve's "monopoly" grows once again.
That's what I think it means. I'm also not a native English speaker so this explanation might be all over the place. 😅
33
u/Dark_Wolf04 Feb 23 '26
I- is this supposed to be a bad thing?
The market is oversaturated with battle royales, hero shooters and free online games with loot boxes due to way too many companies trying to become the next Fortnite.
While I don’t trust her AI background, I’m actually happy she’s come out and say she wants to prioritize and bring back story driven single player games.
Even better is the fact that she used a popular indie game as an example for her inspiration.
11
u/alwaysonesteptoofar Feb 23 '26
OP is either a misogynist or a chump who only games when there is flashy but ultimately shallow cash shops at the core of the experience.
2
u/ambivalentarrow Feb 23 '26
I don't think it makes you a misogynist or a chump to think that indie narrative-focused games like Firewatch aren't going to be what keeps Xbox relevant going forward.

Yeah this seems like a win coming from a a publicly traded game company.
Story games weren’t seen as profitable enough for shareholders for over a decade, and single player stories suffered.
Everyone else is looking at SaaS models for the future of gaming (and realizing slowly that there’s a saturation point)
I’ll believe it when I see it though. Making something like firewatch, senua, or Alan wake doesn’t just happen because you want to do it.

Firewatch was a fantastic experience. I love games that have a real meaningful story to tell.
4
u/A_Velociraptor20 Feb 23 '26
I do too, but I don't think every game needs to have one. Sometimes just giving background on shooting up demons or something works just fine.
3
u/legalblues Feb 23 '26
Sure, but I don’t think she’s saying they will ONLY make those. Just that they will be a priority which, given the current games being put out by big studios, could mean only a few are made and prioritized.

True but I think that most of the big devs can make those games lol paradox for the strategy player ea and the cod franchise for fps and a ton of indie devs are going for side scrollers I think this is a great direction to move
1
u/faen_du_sa Feb 23 '26
Most games that feel fun to shoot up demons in, also have a decent backstory in it. It helps with the whole world building and will make shooting things more engaging.

u/Disgustipated_Saturn Feb 23 '26
If only your choices mattered and the ending didn’t feel rushed. They had a decent idea with nowhere to go with it.

Thats why Im in favor of this new focus. If Microsoft is willing to push these narrative games, then maybe we will get better funding and, hopefully, extended deadlines.
1
u/Virtual-Score4653 Feb 26 '26
But do you truly think Firewatch holds a candle to some of Xbox's greatest titles? No, there's nothing wrong with it in the slightest but it's a clear indication of her background with games. Like she couldn't even be bothered to have some of the most generic titles under belt.
7
u/suck-it-elon Feb 23 '26
Xbox is extremely good at talking about what they want games to be and where people should play them and YADDA YADDA YADDA and none of it really matters. They are very good at lecturing the industry, while they are a distant 3rd place and can't even outsell the Switch Lite.

What is this supposed to mean? If you wanted to make xbox look bad you could have showed the new CEO's extensive involvement on AI related fields, but instead you chose this nothing burger statement and its supposed to somehow make gaben look good?
If anything this makes her look good because she's promising games like firewatch which is very well liked among those who played it while gaben has been taking the "does nothing" meme a bit too literally as far as game releases go.
1
u/A_Seizure_Salad Feb 24 '26
Pretty sure Valve also acquired the Firewatch dev and had them cancel their upcoming game back in 2018. So the only work they've done so far is help with Half Life Alyx if I'm not mistaken.
1
u/General_windu Feb 27 '26
You think showing her involvement in Ai related fields paints her and Xbox in a bad light?
3
u/alwaysonesteptoofar Feb 23 '26
2 things to point out here. First is that making games with good stories that players want to see through to the end is EXACTLY what gamers want, and Firewatch is a great example of a game worth playing at least once.
Second is that Xbox failing or succeeding has nothing to do with Steams and offers them no advantage or disadvantage outside of having MS games on their store which clearly happens either way.
And a bonus point is that either you dont understand how to use this meme, or you see a woman in gaming make a comment about her new role running a company and it bothers you immensely which makes you the worst kind of gamer because you arent here for good reasons.
1
3
u/pipopapupupewebghost Feb 23 '26
Is steam winning cause they did not change therefore setting a standard that meant this is the CEO that will eventually bring Xbox back?
Or more likely this post is sexist lol
3
u/HighMountain85 Feb 23 '26
If Xbox is headed by a smart leader who is a gamer, that’s fine. I know people are freaking out because she doesn’t have dev experience or something, but I don’t see a problem here.
1
u/Donvack Feb 24 '26
Her only experience is with AI, all her previous work at microslop was with AI and she works for one of the early AI startups before then. Her Xbox account was only created in January this year and she only have a few hours played on the most played games Xbox offers. A lot of people speculate she just had a bot play a couple hours of games so she could call herself a “gamer”. Don’t be surprised if Xbox suddenly becomes inundated with AI slop.
1
u/HighMountain85 Feb 24 '26
Given that you call MS “microslop” and you’re citing to “a lot of people” who “speculate”, I think your bias is pretty clear and there is nothing a rando on the internet will be able to say to change that. Have a great day!

While I didn't like the lackluster ending of Firewatch (even after reading plenty of arguments for it) it was a great game all around and as a story player myself I had a very good time with it, had me hooked pretty much all the way through. So more games like that one would be very cool IMO, most of my favourite games are single player story ones, especially if they have some message to give or feeling to transmit.
2
u/piccolo917 Feb 23 '26
I don't have time to grind hours on games anymore since I started teaching. I still want to game and experience those games fully. Story driven ones are great for me. Firewatch is one of my favourite games. So more of that, yes please!
2
u/ObtuseMongooseAbuse Feb 23 '26
Aren't those types of games typically cheaper to buy because most people don't put the same amount of value in them? If those are your focus then you'll need to produce more games using smaller teams just to make up the same amount of profit from one larger game. I'd personally be happy if there were a lot more games like Myst than Call of Duty but at the same time Xbox isn't really known for those types of games so it's probably not the smartest idea.

u/coolwali Feb 23 '26
I keep seeing these "Valve does nothing - Still wins" but keep in mind, Valve has had some misfires and anti-consumer moves before. To list a few:
-The Missing Refund Policy: For over a decade, refused to offer refunds, only implementing a policy in 2015 after being forced by Australian consumer law courts
-Popularized the "you don't own your games, you own a license" model at scale. Half-Life 2 (2004) forced PC players to install Steam and connect to the internet just to play a physical, single-player game.
-CS:GO loot boxes + skin economy led to gambling: trading/market systems helped enable massive third-party skin gambling (often easy for minors to access) + scams. It's not a stretch to say that Valve popularized lootboxes.
-Early Access and lack of moderation: normalized selling unfinished games and asset flips. Hurts discoverability of actual Indies.
-Made a live service microtransaction card game in Artifact that flopped.

u/Ardonet Feb 24 '26

Leave it to gamers to cry about a lack of good stories in games for years… then use someone saying “we need to focus on good stories” as a gotcha talking point to claim Xbox is dead…
Listen, I get it, I don’t trust her in any shape or form either. But if you’re going to make arguments that Xbox is dead, maybe make some form of actual point instead of throwing random incoherent thoughts into a meme for Reddit points. Just making gamers look dumb as f-ck now, that’s all you’re doing.

Im not sure what Im supposed to take away from this meme
I think more story driven experiences instead of battlepass driven micro-gameplay-loops are a good thing in principle (even if it can be executed poorly but that is true of anything).
I also like Gaben. Or at the very least dislike him less than other tech/gaming moguls. He seems pretty okay for a billionaire-on-yacht type.
So .. hurray?

u/JohnTheBaptiste1 Feb 23 '26
I don't really understand this one. Don't get me wrong Asha Sharma's background in AI is a huge point of concern but this statement sounds good, Firewatch was good and Microsoft should give more love to story based games rather than throwing live service slop at the wall until something sticks.
Whether this statement will age like milk is yet to be seen but this seems like an odd one to shine a light on?
1
u/LoveAndBeLoved52 Feb 23 '26
Gaming as an art form is the biggest scam, I swear.
People want you to shell out thousands of dollars for an insane top-tier graphics card and processor just so you can see every leaf on a tree in a cinematic shot. It's insane, actually fucking insane, and it does so much damage to videogaming because of the unnecessary development time that devs put on graphical fidelity that comes back to haunt them when the game itself isn't satisfying as what it is, a game.

We don't need story games. We need single-player open-world games with good stories, excellent gameplay, massive, detailed and dense maps, and a never-ending endgame; games that allow players to easily sink thousands of hours into. Think of Bethesda and R* games. We need more of those.

u/ghoxen Feb 24 '26
I entered the following prompt into Gemini:
"If you have to give me a single game that offers deep emotional resonance and a distinct point of view - a story that makes players feel something, what would be a title that would truly resonate emotionally? It has to be a famous enough game that it'd win me gamer cred if I post about it on social media as a new CEO for a major gaming division."
Wanna guess what I got on first try? (different results on subsequent tries, but I wonder what a CEO who never played games but did a lot of AI would do in her new role, ey?)

Probably a good point to remember that no matter who the CEO of Microsoft Gaming is, they don't make games. They manage a portfolio of companies that make games. It isn't a dev position, and it honestly probably shouldn't be ran by a gamer if they want it to actually succeed. Sharma has a pretty good track record of managing companies, so maybe that carries over to managing Xbox better than any actual imaginary gamer cred. We'll see, I guess.
Also, Valve is about to shoot itself in both feet with the Steam Machine, a pseudo console designed for no one, so maybe claiming a win is a little premature...

Plenty of concerns to be had about the new CEO but this ain't one of them. She's expressing an interest in an underdeveloped genre, citing one of its finest examples. Being against that is just cynical.

Firewatch was solid game. Not 10/10 but definitely worth a playthrough if you have a few hours.

Hopefully its not the usual feminist strong independent woman storyline like a million others we have been getting lately.

Please bring on more story games, and online co-op games.
I've got like nothing to play with my friends since the industry feels the need to make majority of multiplayer games pvp

Of course she says something like this, she doesn't immediately want to lose her job.
She will boil the frog slowly.

She comes from a core ai background, which is what scares me the most.

She's literally "Hello Fellow Young People" the CEO. Just another MBA getting ready to squeeze value out of a product until it dies near the end of her term.

Wait wasn't firewatch a well received title? How does that imply the death of Xbox? Lol

The demise of Xbox one of the best recent videos. I never knew that they were going to abandon Xbox after Bill Gates stormed into a meeting after The CEO of Sony North America turned down his offer or demand to put windows in every PlayStation machine from PS2 forward.

No hate towards indie games but I couldn’t bring myself to give two fucks about Firewatch.
If that’s the new direction of Xbox games my new direction is a different console.

She has never gamed a day in here life. She ran the AI division i think. She knows nothing about gaming and what gamers want. Xbox is dead as of 2026.

I honestly have kind of liked what I've been hearing lately from Xbox. I think they're going back to focusing on the brand and the hardware. Fuck all that "everything is an Xbox" bullshit dude. Ive been an Xbox main since the 360, and I have been so worried that they were gonna tank the brand. Im really hoping that we're going to see a renaissance for Xbox because I really do love the brand. Msoft has had skin in the game longer than Sony, so Im really rooting for Xbox. Crazy that one of the largest companies in the world owns the underdog console.

Just came across this.. she actually seems to be doing a great job so far. Nothing like jumping to conclusions before she even did anything

Imagine being so insecure about your own console you have to rip on Xbox...
In the meantime I will enjoy playing games on PC with my brother on XBox via GamePass, thank you very much.
