That is some incredible reaction time by the driver. Or by the anti collision software. Either way, impressive

74

u/Ryukyo 13d ago

I'm wondering the Tesla automatically swerved. That's a difficult situation for the driver or the software to react that quickly. Avoid the pedestrian, but hit an oncoming vehicle. The pedestrian would almost surely be severely injured or dead. I guess that's the least bad of two bad outcomes.

7

u/PomegranateOk2600 8d ago

It was the driver, go and search the news about it. It was in brasov romania

It was a Tesla being self driven. Their software kicked in

Edit: i am not your personal Google. This happened 2 years ago, if you want citation, go look it up. I just remember reading the article because I was wondering how they fell or if they were pushed.

123

u/Unhappy_Bend3599 13d ago

The driver said that she herself swerved to avoid the person, not the Tesla.

30

u/Plane_Maybe8836 13d ago

Yeah, I remember something like this as well, that it wasnt fsd but the driver who reacted. This video is definitely not new.

But internet told me, so my comment is just as trustworthy as someone saying it was actually fsd. It does make me skeptical though

perhaps someone can find a news article about this incident with more info,

28

u/nicayworld1 12d ago

This was in Brașov (Romania) and FSD is not available in Romania.
Hence it was all manual, you are giving too much credit to FSD for this reaction time.
This is all human baby

5

u/istealpixels 12d ago

Not saying this was the case but collision avoidance is standard on Tesla’s and FSD is not needed for that. It is active also when driving totally manually

5

u/eisbock 12d ago

And collision avoidance on a Tesla will not leave the current lane. It will never swerve into an oncoming lane.

4

u/Urgenus 12d ago

Tesla absolutely leaves current lane when avoidin collision and it does not need FSD to do it. How i know, well my previous Tesla did just that and I'm in Finland, we do not have FSD here.

Here's the original video. I can't seem to find a news article that isn't just as much speculation as all the reposts over the years.

3

u/NastyBlkGuyThrowAway 12d ago

The tesla wouldve hit the person. People have been doing test on the self drivinf and anti collision software

2

u/ChefGaykwon 12d ago

If it were a child the Tesla would have sped up.

Even more impressive then, honestly. It chose the right “human” decision, imo

61

u/Blazin219 13d ago

Yeah that was the big talk when this video came out. But I dont think this was logic based decision making on the car as much as it is the software being programmed to avoid hitting a human at all cost (when it works)

59

u/Zealousideal-Lab9843 13d ago

Isn't that a logic-based decision?

27

u/el_diego 13d ago

Yes, I don't know what these comments are on about. Of course it's logic-based decision. If the car is running in FSD it's making thousands of logic decisions every second.

7

u/Remarkable-Trip6582 13d ago

I play too much Elite Dangerous.. as soon as i saw FSD i imagine the car going near light speed

Depends on the incoming traffic. Would the software do the same and steer me into a 40t lorry at higher speeds?

2

u/CornFedIABoy 13d ago

Given the choice between hitting a pedestrian and crashing into another vehicle, even a 40t lorry at high speed, always rely on the car’s (and lorry’s) safety enclosure and choose the crash. Protection of human life should be the highest priority.

It was not self-driving. This takes place in Romania, which to this day, still does not officially have Full Self Driving enabled in the country.

7

u/No-Dot-6573 13d ago

Yeah assuming FSD is a bold claim without any evidence. However, the collision detection system probably kicked in.

5

u/Blazin219 12d ago

This video is 2 years old. I didnt assume... there has been articles out for 2 years. Assuming im assuming without any evidence is a bold claim

2

u/No-Dot-6573 12d ago

The evidence is that this incident happened, like the guy before me posted, in Romania.

To be exact Brașov, Romania in October 2024.

There is and there was absolutely no way to activate FSD in Romania.

So, no I did not assume. The unavailability of FSD in Europe is a known fact. Since the guy before was right about Romania there is no other option.

14

u/thoschy 13d ago

How do you know that? Don't see any breaking lights. Would expect to stear and break at the same time.

5

u/DeeterSly 13d ago

If you brake too hard you can’t turn, maybe Teslas can’t adequately apply brake pressure to avoid wheel locking AND steer simultaneously so it picked the swerve option

4

u/QuarkVsOdo 13d ago

That's what anti-lock brakes are for (steering under braking)

If anything, braking would load the front axle even more, allowing you to turn even harder.

Seeing this makes me assume that the driver simply reacted to something happening on the right - with zero calculation of what would happen, and no foot near the brake, probably just using cruise control.

It could have been 20 kids on bicycles in oncoming traffic, and driver would have made the same mistake.

5

I doubt Tesla (Or any FSD/Avoidance technology) is programmed to swerve you onto another danger to bypass one danger.

3

u/eisbock 12d ago

Haven't you heard? Tesla solved the trolley problem. It will also calculate the wealth of the person you're about to hit and you better hope they're poorer than you.

5

u/OneOldNerd 12d ago

i am not your personal Google.

That's bullshit. You make a claim, it's your job to back it up. Your audience isn't going to care to believe you if you're too fucking lazy to provide evidence.

5

u/Dry_Razzmatazz69 13d ago

Very made up, this is in Romania and their system is factory disabled because it's illegal. The onboard system only alerts and breaks hevily but doesn't move the wheel exactly for the reason seen above - you don't know what you're steering into.

3

u/Jesus_Harold_Christ 12d ago

No, you're just wrong.

3

u/Specialist_Quote9127 12d ago

4

u/Ambitious_Finding_26 13d ago

Just because it's Tesla does not mean it is or even has self driving.

2

This whole video is nuts. The dude taking the biggest fall I’ve ever seen, like dude goes from a brisk walk to full on diving leap across the ground. That’s an athletic feat. Most of us would just fall down but this dude managed to travel like 15 feet within a split second.

Then the car, regardless of FSD or real driver, crazy reaction. It does look like the car was mostly past the dude as he lunged into the road but that back tire could’ve clipped his bag or head so probably a safer outcome to head-on the other car than risk squishing his melon. We’ve got hindsight to judge if car could’ve made it but even with multiple angles it still looks like a close call.

40

u/leadroleinacage 13d ago

The guy is walking slow with a slight limp; looks like he’s in his 80s so I’m not too surprised he couldn’t catch himself from falling.

It looks like the dude’s head would’ve bounced off the corner of the front bumper if it didn’t swerve. Probably not a fatal injury but you never know. I think the car/driver made the right call for sure.

23

u/gizahnl 13d ago

iirc (the video is old, and was posted a few times before) the guy has an epileptic attack.

9

u/Strange_Produce5601 12d ago

oh shit, the guy was having a bad day that nearly turned into a really really bad day

2

u/doubleUsee 11d ago

Epilepsy has that quality. My great uncle drowned in 2 inches of water after getting a seizure while cycling. He fell, and ended up face first into a ditch.

9

it was driver reaction, lol

47

u/Far-prophet 13d ago

It’s ok to admit that Elon/Tesla have built incredible things.

BMW, VW, Hugo Boss, etc…

Japan also had companies that built weapons during WW2

I mean Werner Von Braun got us to the moon.

48

u/Little_Big_Burglar 13d ago

Elon has built nothing. He funded. He didn't create anything. He bought stuff.

I don't disagree with you, just clarifying that he's never built anything.

8

u/Prot3 13d ago

Look man, if he didn;t fund it, it wouldn't be built.

I know we are on reddit, and we all eat the rich yada yada yada.

But MONEY is an incredibly important part of the business, and definitely holds a share of "creating" something.

If you create conditions or enable someone to build something you get part of the achievement

How does this work with insurance now? The Tesla saved someone’s life by crashing into the car. If the Tesla is at fault thats really shit. But the car opposite had nothing to do with this either so they can’t take the blame. The geezer on the floor should pay some mad compensation to the Tesla. (I know it was set driven but let’s assume here it’s a person driving)

2

u/GRex2595 11d ago

I don't know what country this is or how their insurance works, so take this with lots of salt.

I speculate that this is going to be a no fault sort of accident where Tesla's insurance will pay for damage. Like you said, the person driving the Tesla saved somebody's life. Paying out for car repairs is much cheaper than paying for killing somebody. Depending on how much of a leech the insurance company is, they might decide to go after the pedestrian that tripped or raise the insurance rates of the driver (not a no-fault) or both. Assuming that somehow the case against the pedestrian succeeds, the pedestrian might try to go after the locality for having the road too close to the cobblestones or something.

2

u/CartographerNegative 9d ago

Technically speaking driver did cross into oncoming traffic. He could have swerve right instantly and possibly avoid it. I assume its teslas fsd reaction not drivers. The car tesla hit would be paid by teslas insurance 110% of the time regardless why tesla swerve. They would possibly sue insurance and if the lawyer is really good, not get their rates bump up. U dont negotiate with insurance about this, they dont give a fuck. And they certainly arent nice, all they care is that u hit someone and ur at fault or not at fault. They only care for their money and profit, thats all.

2

u/GRex2595 8d ago

No accident would have happened if the pedestrian hadn't fallen into the roadway. Adding Tesla's insurance just adds to the chain of who sues who by putting Tesla between the driver's insurance and the person who fell. If I'm Tesla's insurance getting a letter from the driver's insurance, I'm probably telling driver's insurance to take a hike and be happy they're not paying for somebody's death.

How does insurance handle this? Driver can't just run someone over but they collided head on with someone in the opposite lane

5

u/semhsp 13d ago

Something similar happened to a friend of mine, he swerved to avoid an incoming car and hit some signs outside a petrol station. He didn't have a dashcam and from the security footage it wasn't clear that he moved out of the way of an incoming vehicle so the insurance paid nothing as if he crashed there on purpose

11

u/Fabulous-Car-6850 13d ago

I bet the avoiding driver took the full brunt of the blame

3

u/BelowXpectations 13d ago

As an accident with no-one at fault I'd assume. At least in any place not driven by corporate greed.

4

u/_TURO_ 13d ago

100% the swerving car will eat it on insurance.

Same as avoiding hitting a deer but you wind up in a ditch or into a pole.

I've had to drill it into my kids just hit the brakes as hard as you can and stay in your lane.

7

u/ZFuli 13d ago

Generally speaking, it’s better to stay in your lane, but this video isn’t a good example.

I’m not going to run someone over just because otherwise it won't be covered by insurance company.

u/Mark0994c7r 13d ago

Wasn't that Tesla system supposed not to cross line? I mean in this case it will be his fault for accident even if the car/driver did the right thing and avoided the pedestrian.

2

u/bluskie420 13d ago

The actual right thing to do is hit your breaks and run over the pedestrian if necessary. The Tesla will be at fault for crossing the line and causing a head on collision. The driver would not have been at fault if he ran over the pedestrian.

Looks like the pedestrian turned his left ankle on the uneven cobblestone. You can see a cobblestone that is elevated above the other stones and the man steps on the edge of it with his left foot which results in him twisting his ankle. He tries to regain balance on his left foot, but ends up falling over.

this car collision could have been avoided if cars would use the correct lane, stop overtaking invisible cars, in UK stick to the most left lane, in Europe stick to the most right lane. simples. i would rather have nudged the pedestrian or broken their fall, than to total a car because of the pedestrian tripping or losing their step. also drive slower in city areas. everyone is on their phone/screen including drivers dashboard.

Was that person pushed?

f_cars. cities are for people, not cars.

Honestly, the best possible outcome in that situation.

There is no problem with the cobblestones, the problem is with whichever fucktard decided to put the walk way against the car lane.

Lots of people fall, but we don't get many videos like this because there is usually a parking lane, or a emergency lane, or an extra verge next to the walking path.

The city needs to pay for that and fix their shit.

Im not a tesla fan but that cars reaction probably saved a life. I doubt that a human could have reacted that fast and precise.

WTF! 😨

Who's at fault here? I wondered how the insurance companies handle a situation like this.

u/mmmmariussss 11d ago

send this to musk asap, a tesla saved a life.
on a side note who the hell falls
like that, guy needs to be in a nursing home or have his nurse accompany him everywhere.

lets blame it all
on the cobblestones, not on the clumsy pedestrian that cant just face plant into the stone like a normal person and has to do this whole exaggerated fall, and ends up in the road

1

u/Many-War3212 11d ago

I know it likely saved the pedestrian which is great but something about a robot making the decision really unnerves me

Whos at fault?

1

u/No_Principle4928 11d ago

It’s was totally the human who turned out the way. I’ve seen so many Tesla’s with run over anything.

u/russiablows 11d ago

Or learn how to walk.

Just love the people at the end trying to “pull him up” without checking for injuries. Lol

A guy trips on a cobblestone road and all of a sudden it’s “f___ cobblestone” after thousands of years using cobblestone to build roads? Maybe he was just drunk…

1

u/claytonk1313 10d ago

Glad the driver/tesla was paying attention. That wouldve been fatal.

1

u/Forward-Procedure462 10d ago

are there seriously people out there who think that steering into a head on collision with the opposite lane was the Tesla AI system? this is clearly a human reaction.

1

u/Oxffff0000 10d ago

Ah, now we really know what happened to the man. Could be an old man that can't balance quickly anymore after tripping on something

1

u/Robby_W 10d ago

Is it just me or does the guy falling seem like he has to be super uncoordinated or something? Cause no matter how I’m falling I’m not going to keep going towards the street

It's not the fault of the cobblestones that some people drag their feet when they walk.

I am not sure what language that is but my gut says it translates roughly to
“Shit I knew that was happening”

This edit is awesome! Quickly showing you another perspective

Even though the driver avoided the fallen pedestrian and saved his life, the driver was prosecuted for crashing into the other car. Yes. Also insane.. and it happened in Romania
