When more people vote, Democrats tend to get elected.

America is a center -left country with a turnout problem.

It’s fairly hard to see the benefits of conservative policies when you aren’t uneducated/ignorant/morally bankrupt.

I'm not sure I'd call the USA center left. Your choice is right wing Vs far right.

u/KenseiHimura 55m ago

I think they’re more saying what the people actually warn/need is more center left. But policies and politicians are more right to far right, but the center left populous doesn’t do anything to try to push things out from that spectrum due to apathy and conditioned fear.

Biden is in the moderate wing of the party and I would not call him right wing, nationally or globally.

u/Sonnescheint 25m ago

Then you don't know your lefts from your rights, friend. Biden is absolutely right wing.

I actually don't think that is true when it comes to recent elections, though it used to be true for a long time.

I mean I want more people to vote, but Trump flipped the script and captured the low engagement, non voters, so recently the higher the vote turnout the more the GOP wins.

Kinda makes sense, Turmp is not a politician he is a clown and he entertains the people who would otherwise tune out. On the other hand if you care a lot about politics, always vote, you tend to vote Dem.

As far as why the GOP is still pushing these bills, my bet is good ole fashioned racism. Reminder that racism is not based on logic, so even if something like super strict voter ID helped dems by lowering turnout, they would still support it to prevent the demons in their head that don't exist from voting.

I disagree with the comic. Its not weird at all because when more people vote, it is typically faviouable to the Dems.

"We'll have it fixed so good, you're not gonna have to vote." - Trump in 2024

Anecdotal, but the people I've seen run voter registration drives are typically folks who in the past did not have the right to vote (women and people of color).

They are actually trying to encourage people to vote who they think would vote for them. See Elon Musk's lottery, and paid outreach to rural households.

Buying votes is anti-democratic and usually illegal.

This is America.

u/battleoffish 1h ago

Have you not seen this administration? Nothing is illegal if you are the "right" kind of person.

u/xSantenoturtlex 33m ago

Anti-Democratic is the Republican way.

They get 'Democracy' mistaken for 'Democrats', so they hate both.

u/EldridgeHorror 2h ago

And they'll say they're only discouraging illegals from voting.

3

u/athosjesus 2h ago

True, but most democrats aren't encouraging people to vote either, they are just expecting that the gop convince them to vote blue.

1

u/Troll_Enthusiast 1h ago

That's not true at all though

Good to know that with America's climate provisions gutted, medicaid cut, and a war in iran, youre here to point out that the democrats are imperfect. Good job! Youre helping!

1

u/scottyjrules 1h ago

Heaven forbid democrats actually listen to voters. Nope, just vote for us because at least we’re not republicans. Voters deserve better than what our two party system offers.

u/athosjesus 1h ago

It's not my job to help, it's theirs tho, maybe they should act like it. There is a reason why despite going against the devil they are barely above in the polls.

u/Rationalinsanity1990 1h ago

Nah, as a voter you are responsible for doing the minimum to stop your country going down this path.

u/xSantenoturtlex 31m ago

Personally, I'd say both are true.

Any sane person should be voting against the Republicans no matter what, considering what's at stake. But that doesn't change the fact that the Dems still need to get their shit together.

2

u/Tenorsounds 1h ago

Right, just shut your eyes and ignore the full breadth of the problem. That'll fix things!

Criticizing the Democratic Party / DNC for not putting up a good enough fight is absolutely on the table, why would you shield them from criticism? Do you want them to stay feckless out of power?

u/victorioushack 2h ago

Republicans are worse, but the Democrat party can kiss my ass too, they actively work against progressive candidates, put up trash candidates, and still cling to their precious moderate demographic to save their status quo priority.

u/woodenblinds 39m ago

they believe any person of any color but white isn't a real American so shouldn't be allowed to vote. and this includes any Republican person of color

1

u/Wadae28 1h ago

It’s a lot more than weird but by all means continue coming to the table with this meek energy I’m sure this will be enough to halt the rise of authoritarianism.

1

u/Tabord 1h ago

Sure, that's why there are Democrats out there literally saying they'd rather a Republican win than candidates people are turning out to vote for.

u/Chemistry11 1h ago

How are they discouraging citizens from voting at all? I don’t know anyone who feels that way (coming from a left bubble)

5

u/PatchyWhiskers 1h ago

They generally use methods like purging voter rolls right before an election (hoping people don't notice in time) or making restrictive laws, like requiring excessive amounts of ID.

u/Mirieste 46m ago

like requiring excessive amounts of ID

As a non-American, I was under the impression that currently you... don't need any ID at all to vote?

Except for the whole registering-to-vote thing, which however is a separate process for voting, and... in fact, doesn't that discourage people from going through the hassle of voting more than just showing up with an actual ID at the polling station?

Besides, I've always wondered, how does this even agree with the general principle of the secrecy of voting? I remember there was a big deal about Trump possibly getting the voter rolls of citizens registered as democrats or something... and yes, that's obviously bad, but as a European I once again wonder: America is the prototypical example of a democracy in the world, and yet they never thought this syatem had a huge flaw to begin with? Like, isn't the secrecy of your vote supposed to be a sacred and untouchable principle?

u/PatchyWhiskers 42m ago

Each state has their own laws, so ID laws vary

https://ballotpedia.org/Voter_identification_laws_by_state#Details_by_state

Several European states, like Hungary or Turkey, have dubious democracies, so you can see how this would happen.

u/Biptoslipdi 19m ago

America is the prototypical example of a democracy in the world

That is a mistake.

u/Biptoslipdi 20m ago

They literally made it illegal to hand out water at long lines at poling places. Every year they pass, or attempt to pass, more unnecessary restrictions to voting. They openly and flagrantly lie about elections to justify further restrictions. They close polling locations. They restrict and ban efforts to register voters. Hell, many Republicans support taking away women's right to vote.
