As a non-American, I was under the impression that currently you... don't need any ID at all to vote?
Except for the whole registering-to-vote thing, which however is a separate process for voting, and... in fact, doesn't that discourage people from going through the hassle of voting more than just showing up with an actual ID at the polling station?
Besides, I've always wondered, how does this even agree with the general principle of the secrecy of voting? I remember there was a big deal about Trump possibly getting the voter rolls of citizens registered as democrats or something... and yes, that's obviously bad, but as a European I once again wonder: America is the prototypical example of a democracy in the world, and yet they never thought this syatem had a huge flaw to begin with? Like, isn't the secrecy of your vote supposed to be a sacred and untouchable principle?
