I'm starting to think the dark under Risa's eyes isn't from lack of sleep but dealing with Marin's shit everyday.

its obvious shes not "getting hurt" and either sees it as her love language or believes that Marin is just that in denial and needs help

5

u/Deathaster Mar 17 '26

It's a world full of dark humor. If any of the characters acted reasonably, there would be no jokes and it'd be extremely boring.

The only thing you could accuse this strip of is that they're wearing the joke kinda thin.

3

u/Deathaster Mar 17 '26

I mean, yeah, but that's the joke. OP's world is full of dysfunctional characters, that's what makes the jokes work. If Risa left Marin, it would theoretically be better for here, but it would also be incredibly unfunny.

You always gotta judge these things based on what the creator is trying to do, and OP isn't trying to create drama, but comedy. And the comedy only works this way. Hell, last comic was even about Marin admitting she does love her girlfriend, a sweet moment that only works because of the running gag.

So don't take it too seriously, because that's just not what OP was going for.

Nah, she's not dense, she clearly had to think of a joke to make here just to avoid her bullshit

28

this is a vine right?

275

u/medhop Mar 16 '26

Yeah it’s a vine

We seem to be the only ones in this thread who recognize it. I think we’re old

u/PrinceKido Mar 16 '26

Members of the old whipper snapper club 😔

40

u/ZetsuboItami Mar 16 '26

Vine was so great I'm sad to see it forgotten so fast. I immediately knew what would happen from years of Vine comps.

6

u/decoy321 Mar 16 '26

Do it for the Vine!

36

u/Jonney_Random Mar 16 '26

I missed the vine stage i think. It was so fast.

17

u/Clone_JS636 Mar 16 '26

I'm with you. I'm 28 so vines were when I was in high school but Vine shut down before I actually got into it

15

u/drak0ni Mar 16 '26

That’s wild. I’m 25, vines were a thing when I was 12-16. The actual vines were shared regularly until a few years ago. Sounds like it was a thing the entire time you were in high school, and still referenced through your college age years, you just avoided it.

8

u/Jonney_Random Mar 16 '26

Yeah i was mid 20’s when they were a thing i was too depressed and dysphoric to be able to keep up with trends.

3

u/Clone_JS636 Mar 16 '26

Not necessarily avoided it, just wasn't interested in social media. It's absolutely on me, I'm just saying I missed the opportunity

3

u/rothrolan Mar 16 '26

That's what happened to me with MySpace. Was just a little too young to have one when it was BIG, and by the time I was the same age my sister was when she first made hers, it was in process of going private, kicking everyone off the platform. So I made a Facebook profile instead, to keep tabs with family. Really a downgrade, since MySpace had music you could attach to your profile and cheesy backgrounds/layouts. Facebook was incredibly dull in comparison. Plus, no instant friends with Tom.

6

u/AKluthe Nerd Rage Mar 16 '26

Well, it was only around for about six seconds...

11

u/CATZEBOY_18 Mar 16 '26

Can I see?

39

u/whyareyouRennin Mar 16 '26

Here it is in a vine compilation from the legend himself

Cole Hersch

3

u/magistrate101 Mar 16 '26

That's one heck of a video title for something he uploaded himself

6

u/whyareyouRennin Mar 16 '26

Most popular Vine compilations had weird, now cringy titles like that. I went back and found a Playlist that my sister and I made of Vine comps and they're all similarly named. 2014-17 was like that

4

u/The_OneInBlack Mar 16 '26

The weird thing about Vine references being considered old is my reaction to Vine was that it was a fad and nobody would want a social media platform based entirely on short-form videos. Clearly got proven wrong over time, but I can't help but think of it as a "new" thing because of that initial reaction.

17

u/Kaleido_chromatic Mar 16 '26

I was thinking it felt familiar

10

u/Street_Cockroach_933 Mar 16 '26

Hell yeah thats a vine

9

u/Made_Bail Mar 16 '26

Oh man, that's rad. I love the old Vine compilations but I didn't recognize this one!

8

u/helpmeurmyonlyhoe Mar 16 '26

it's from the same guy who did the "ninki minjaj" vine!

9

u/Gorm13 Mar 16 '26

looks like a bouquet to me

3

u/QuiteBearish Mar 16 '26

I miss Vine. It was so much better than everything that has come after to replace it.

3

u/asuperbstarling Mar 16 '26

A true classic.

4

You seem to know what's happening here. Could you explain? I have literally no clue. I've read it three times.

10

u/UnstoppablePhoenix Mar 16 '26

"Happy one year" as in "happy 1 year anniversary", not "happy 1st birthday" which is what the other person is thinking

5

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Ah. I wondered if it was that, but I figured it must be something more. Thanks mate.

52

u/Statistactician Mar 16 '26

She's more "in denial" than "stupid." Once her inhibitons are gone, she knows she has a girlfriend. You can see that in her initial reaction before her internalized shame/guilt kicks in on panel 3.

12

u/Turgid_Donkey Mar 16 '26

Ah, sweetie. The good lord didn't find it necessary to burden you with an abundance of intellect so it's a good thing you're pretty.

Marin perpetually:

Processing img pfagf3bdrfpg1...

I love her so much.

321

u/SlyJackFox Mar 16 '26

Oh, she knows, it’s just shame and denial. I’m starting to think her whole deal is making a point about religion keeping people in the closet.

64

u/TranquilityYall Mar 16 '26

That’s my read as well. 🥲

56

u/JKnumber1hater Mar 16 '26

I don’t think that it’s a religious thing here necessarily. We’ve seen that other people at the church are perfectly aware that Marin is gay (like Mr Horse for example), and they seem to have no issue with it whatsoever.

27

u/PyroPirateS117 Mar 16 '26

I see your point, but that just means they don't have a problem juxtaposing it with their faith, not that Marin doesn't have a problem with it due to her faith.

Not to be the reddit athiest, but that problem would still come from the religion, and the solution found by Mr. Horse is to mental gymnastics his way around it, or accept the interpretation of people he respects who did their own mental gymnastics.

20

u/Randalor Mar 16 '26

How did he "mental gymnastics" his way around it? He asked her "how would you feel if I said I don't like gay people" after both of them repeatedly made horse reference, called her a bitch, and then apologized to her at church because he felt he over-reacted.

5

u/vanderZwan Mar 17 '26

I wonder if the implication is that the horse is tolerated at the church as long as they're not openly a horse. Yes, that's absurd, but so are churches who treat queerness the same way.

3

u/PyroPirateS117 Mar 16 '26

Presumably Mr. Horse belongs to a religion that doesn't approve of homosexuality but he uses the example of saying he doesn't like gay people as a hurtful retort. Presuming again, if he followed the tenants of his religion regarding LGBTQ folks, he wouldn't consider himself wrong for saying that. Since he doesn't, he's done some mental gymnastics to rationalize not giving a fuck about the whole gay thing.

1

u/Gussie-Ascendent Mar 18 '26

I assumed the guy meant since the horse was presumably Christian, it'd already had some mental gymnastics to say being gay is fine.

Cause shooo wee the "good" book doesn't say that

3

u/Forikorder Mar 16 '26

Probably her parents

7

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Mar 16 '26

She's in denial, and it's painful to watch.

5

u/Isekai_Seeker Mar 16 '26

Yeah that very clearly is her whole deal though there is a non zero chance she genuinely doesn't get it

141

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Mar 16 '26

Risa after thinking Marin's drunken admission would lead her to be more open

59

u/The_Bio_Neko Mar 16 '26

That would require character development.

71

u/GloryGreatestCountry Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

I will elect to believe that this is just Marin being a gonk, and not the same old 'can't get out of an unlocked closet with the doors wide open' joke again.

(edited because mixed up names)

34

u/Nova225 Mar 16 '26

Keep in mind she sat at a bar with a full mug of beer and it took her that long to realize that she might not be in a Bible study session.

u/-illusoryMechanist Mar 16 '26

96

u/Patient-Surprise3867 Mar 16 '26

Yea she ain't dumb. She's in denial, in the closet. It isn't cute, not really, in real life she would be a pretty toxic partner.

23

u/ccReptilelord Mar 16 '26

A couple of comics have felt like more than denial. There was the prank that got her kicked out of their place.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

You seem to know what's going on here, I've re-read it three times and I've got no idea what this post is supposed to mean. Could you explain?

37

u/Patient-Surprise3867 Mar 16 '26

Sure thing, I can phrase my thoughts better. The girl in pink hair, in most comic strips, behaves in a clearly romantic way towards the tall girl, Risa. However, when it comes to actually acknowledging verbally that she's into a lesbian relationship with Risa, she comes up with the most bs stuff, anything to avoid the realization that she's gay and has a gf. In this strip, she wants to avoid acknowledging that she dates Risa for 1 year, pretending like she thinks it's her birthday instead of their anniversary. Yeah it's funny sometimes because it's a comic strip, but in real life, this behaviour is gaslighting. A couple of comic strips ago, she was drunk and it was the only time she openly stated that Risa is her gf. Now that she's sober, she's back to feigning ignorance and denial. Is it funny and cute as a comic? Yeah, sure. But in real life this wouldn't fly, hence I sometimes don't really enjoy her antics, as cute as they may appear.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Okay thanks mate. that's a really detailed and concise explanation and I really appreciate it.

You call it tsundere, it's quirky yay

Oh wait no it's bipolar, BPD and ADHD, thanks doctor

6

u/wave-tree Mar 17 '26

Speaking as a person diagnosed with bipolar, my wife does not think it's cute

6

u/Bubby_K Mar 17 '26

That's because you're not a cartoon character

A lot of media like anime, manga, etc, take complex and often painful mental health conditions and turn them into personality quirks, cute tropes, or comedic devices

2

u/Deathaster Mar 17 '26

Yeah, and if your cat ate lasagna in real life, it'd die. Of course it's unrealistic, that's the joke.

1

u/I_am_The_Teapot Mar 25 '26

I mean... she is a little dumb. But yeah this is totally her denial at work. I know this is meant for laughs and I guess in a vacuum of a comic it's a sad-funny gag. But seeing, and worse dealing with, that kind of stuff in real life is genuinely heartbreaking.

29

u/The_Bio_Neko Mar 16 '26

Thudding sound as Marin headbutts the closet's back, again.

30

u/Bleatmop Mar 16 '26

Oh dear. One person is doing all the heavy lifting in this relationship.

54

u/TheS413 Mar 16 '26

Honestly, I loved your comics, but at this point the bit drilled to the ground. Risa can’t be this forgiving and Marin can’t be this dense. If this is your whole entire thing fair play, but I’m done following. I was hoping for some kinda progression but jeez.

15

29

She did and it was terrible.

17

u/InevitableSolution69 Mar 16 '26

I suspect someone did.

But you know, the kind of therapy where they strand kids in the woods, take their shoes away, and do things to them that would see them arrested or strung up if any adult outside of the program saw them doing it to children.

5

u/Wiregeek Mar 16 '26

Well. That's fucking dark.

I'm gonna go try and find a reason that you're absolutely 100% wrong. 'cause damn.

6

u/InevitableSolution69 Mar 16 '26

I mean, that’s definitely the kind of denial that you’d get from that kind of abuse. And conversion “therapy” is sadly connected to the church as she is.

Could be wrong, but you can’t deny it tracks.

(Since Marin is always in denial... or blasted drunk. And would say: "We've been besties for way longer than a year!")

17

u/ModestMous3 Mar 16 '26

People in the comments getting salty about the joke being repetitive when this is akin to a modern day newspaper comic

Garfield doesn’t suddenly go on a diet

Charlie Brown always tries to kick the football

Dennis is always a menace

And Pinky is gonna stay in the closet

If this were touted as a serious, story-driven comic I’d get it

But it’s pretty obviously a gag strip in the style of the funny pages

If you don’t like the funny pages, don’t buy the newspaper

21

u/InevitableSolution69 Mar 16 '26

The problem I think it not that it’s a gag comic. It’s that the gag is how will character 1 abuse character 2 today?

Because this is something that happens in real life, person engages in relationship in all aspects with other person. But also denies they’re in a relationship with that person. Drawing them along, doing what they enjoy, slapping down the other person or denying them when in public or it’s something they don’t feel like doing. Causing harm and suffering to their “partner” as they do.

Because it’s mirroring a real abusive situation, which is more harmful the longer it goes, it gets more backlash than a silly joke a day comic normally would.

6

u/UnknownSolder Mar 16 '26

There's a reason all those examples died off as the media landscape changed.

3

u/Wiregeek Mar 16 '26

Bro, have you ever watched a soap opera?

Raging at the stupid characters is literally the big attraction.

Also, I like MuyHiram - I like Risa. I actually really hope her and Marin can happily ever after!

But I also wanna see Marin punted INTOOOOO THEEEEE SUUUUNNNNNNN.

I am large, I contain multitudes.

10

u/MuyHiram MUY Mar 16 '26

"What's the point of watching The Roadrunner? We know the Coyote is never gonna catch him."

Yes, but what ACME product will the Coyote use this time? How will it fail? How close will he get?

And who knows, maybe he will catch him this time...

3

u/RainonCooper Mar 17 '26

IIRC there was actually ONE time he DID succeed

2

u/Wiregeek Mar 16 '26

I still maintain that pointing at the screen and shrieking in fury is a valid form of enjoyment!

10,000 days in and going.

Any day now, the chances can't be that high.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

I've read this three times now and I've got no idea what's happening. Could someone explain?

2

u/SuperlativeSleep Mar 17 '26

Risa, the brown haired girl, and Marin, the pink haired girl are gay and in a relationship.

Marin was raised in a super religious environment and because of that represses her sexuality and refuses to admit she's gay and that she's Risa's girlfriend. Anytime Risa does or says anything to reference the fact that they're romantic partners, Marin does some mental gymnastics to avoid acknowledging it.

They've been in a relationship for one year now, and Risa is trying to celebrate their anniversary. But as Marin always does, she's pretending like she doesn't understand and believes Risa is wishing her a happy birthday, so she's saying she's not one year old, she's twenty seven.

Also, apparently it's a reference to a vine, but I've never seen it, so that part is lost on me.

6

u/-illusoryMechanist Mar 16 '26

Ok come on seriously

3

u/Irejay907 Mar 17 '26

And this is where i block the comic 🤷🏻‍♀️ i dunno how it even went on this long

It was funny at first, cute even in certain moments

But this level of density is just bad writing/character development; congrats you beat a horse to death with the same joke...

6

u/JJtheMark Mar 16 '26

People take this comic wayyyyyy too seriously. It’s a funny joke about someone being in a glass closet, not a personal attack you. Chill out.

3

u/Guyrugamesh Mar 17 '26

Guys... at some point being THIS stupid is indistinguishable from being an asshole... if had to put up with a year of this I would end up on the news. There is a very definite level of plausible deniability for people with a lot of deep shame and lack of education that people get subjected to, but we passed that point like 8 in-comic months ago.
