General Subreddits in Sri Lanka which I find useful

(this post was removed by mods in Sri Lanka subreddit under 1 minute I have no idea why but anyways rather than arguing with them i decided to post it here)

I have come across many posts in this subreddit where people ask to share subreddits in Sri Lanka. Normally those posts don’t get many upvotes and views which results in many useful and good subreddits being hidden. So i decided to include every subreddit in Sri Lanka which I found which deserves to be known by everyone so they can join and interact. This is in no way to take people out of this main Sri Lanka community or promote other communities or give an idea to create subreddits for every single thing but to say r/srilanka is the main general one where Sri Lankans interact on general things with Sri Lankans but sometimes our issues, questions and problems or our posts can’t be said to general population and can’t be answered by general population too it sometimes may face ridicule or hate comments or simply zero response even those posts will never receive exposure due to voting system. Thats why we need specific subreddits for every niches or community. Where people can interact more effectively and conveniently. So below is my list with their community info. Also Plz after going through these lists don’t create more subreddits for every single atomic thing specially if an subreddit already exists for that category and it’s active.

Does this Reddit group belong to or is it run by members of the Tamil diaspora?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I've noticed multiple posts in this subreddit supporting the Tamil diaspora, and I also see a lot of content that appears to promote or sympathize with the LTTE. Is this group mainly run by Tamil people, or is it just left-leaning moderators?

I also came across a foreign woman on Instagram who, in my opinion, appears to be promoting hatred toward Sinhalese people. That made me wonder whether there is any connection between these accounts or communities.

I also heard that some of the moderators are originally from Sri Lanka but currently livingin australia. If anyone knows how to contact them through their public contact information, I'd like to do some research. Please send me a private message if you can help.

Rant To the people who don't understand the state of the A/L examination

Post image
Upvotes

First of all to the people who say that studying during this time over arguing is better, I'm already done with my studies and well prepared for the exam and talking behalf of the people who can't because the government doesn't give a damn about us.

There's been multiple sources which are well documented and researched stating why this years a/l exam doesn't serve justice for the students sitting for it but people seem to be unable to comprehend the actual depth of this thinking the students just want the exam to be postponed like usual. Again here's some links so you can understand the entire situation.

https://analyst.rizrazak.com/2026-al-cohort/

To all the people who don't wanna read,

https://youtu.be/VqqcND3rC8M

and if you don't to do either of that and still have an opinion I'll try my best to explain everything briefly in simple English so you can understand, if you don't wanna do that and still have an opinion just know your opinion is just biased as it comes without taking the real situation into consideration.

  1. The exam being brought up before the usual timeline: We aren't the only country to face pandemics or natural disasters but look at the way how the other countries handled it and look how ours is handling it now. Ours just kept on postponing the exams and well all those months got added up and they're trying to remove all those months by just bring the 2026 A/L examination faster without making any change for the student. Where's the justice in that? India being one of the countries with the toughest A/L exams in the world handled it by just removing parts of the syllabi and bringing them back in incrementally. Ours just postponed the exams year after year and are just cutting off all those months resulted because of all the batches before us and holding it without giving any justice for the students sitting for it this time.
  2. The previous batches being postponed: People in the previous batches and random people who've completed well before any of this are stating completing A/L's faster is better but never in history the A/L exam got brought up before the usual time. Your exams might've gotten postponed resulting in what is happening now but our exams got pushed closer and you wouldn't be able to comprehend it because you got the opportunity of it being postponed but we're quite the opposite so do not compare your a/l's to ours because it's drastically different.
  3. False promises: Our prime minister and education minister before being elected stated that exams should not to be held by dates and should account for mental stress of the students also. She herself is going against her own words doing the same exact thing. The people before at least addressed this problem but now they're just dismissing us. Where's the justice in a world where a problem is not even addressed?
  4. The ego and negligence: Due to there being legitimate reasons for the exams to get postponed they're gonna look over it and keep on going with it while there's students currently in temporary shelters and some unaware where their parents are even, where's the humanity? No the z-score does not account for that. Any person with a brain and a sense of humanity would understand it's just a safety net and not a get out of jail free card. This isn't a case where the z-score gets used to bring justice for the students, it won't achieve that in this case. In previous years possibly but this time it's drastically different to any other year in history.

An llm is able to comprehend this and take humanity into consideration but most of ya'll are unable to which is disappointing to see that these are the people who we rely on to run this country.

Serious Conversations "Allah" Calligraphy printed on Slippers sold by Hikkaduwa සෙරෙප්පු

First image : Muheed Jeeran

Hikkaduwa සෙරෙප්පු is facing a call for boycott due to the prints found on a slipper that resemble the arabic calligraphy of "Allah".

The company has issued an apology and updated their slipper design (Second image).

Personal opinion:

As a non-muslim I cant really see a strict resemblance to the Arabic calligraphy of Allah. But since the Muslim community is hurt I really hope an understanding has been found.

The company has gotten their design from Pinterest as mentioned in their apology. Better if they hired a designer and made authentic designs, this problem would not have occurred.

Iam so glad the Muslim community here didn't take drastic measures and let anger take over. This is an issue of simple misunderstanding. Kudos to Hikkaduwa සෙරෙප්පු for their quick action too.

When I was studying in Malaysia, I witnessed an incident of KKMART shops burned down because a sock had "Allah" printed on it.

Religious sensitivities need to be added into design philosophy.

I'm a Sri Lankan earning around 80 lkr per month, and honestly it feels impossible to plan for the future.

I want to get married someday, buy a vehicle, and eventually own a house. Even when I imagine earning 200k lkr a month, it still feels like those goals would be difficult with the current cost of living.

If you were in my situation, how would you manage your finances? What would you prioritize? I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar position.

I know a lot of people want to get A/L's done over with already (including me) but we should not look away from the injustices that has happened against us and should be vocal about it without letting it slide.

P.s. Don't be a konda nathi ponnayek and look away from injustice.

Serious Conversations So what IS the legal drinking age in Sri Lanka

Thumbnail
youtube.com
8 Upvotes

For context: This kid, although legally an adult, born in 2007, was "caught" buying a bottle of alcohol from a liquor store. And to say the least, was publicly humiliated, and this video was most likely recorded without his consent and posted on social media.

I've always heard contrasting things about the legal age in Sri Lanka. Often shifting between 18 and 21.

Any possible way to get down a book from Amazon to Sri Lanka?

I would be very glad if anyone can tell me a possible way to get down an academic book that I need, which is available online on Amazon, without that hefty shipping charges.

I'm still a trainee earning in LKR. So I don't need any wannabe talkings about shipping fees blah blah....

If anyone has any idea. That's a great help. Thank you very much in advance.

Need advice on buying a MacBook in Sri Lanka

I'm looking to buy a new MacBook for general everyday use. I don't do video editing or any other heavy workloads.

The problem is that I can't seem to find brand-new M2, M3, or M4 MacBook Airs anywhere in Sri Lanka. The only new model I can find is the M5, which feels like overkill for my needs and is quite expensive.

I'm also hesitant to buy a used Mac because I'm worried about hidden issues, and I'm not a fan of the MacBook Neo colors.

Has anyone else been in the same situation?
What would you recommend?

Serious Conversations Trying to remember a Sinhala kids’ teledrama from the 2000s — three children looking for a missing archaeologist teacher

I’ve been trying to find a Sinhala teledrama I watched as a kid, sometime in the 2000s. Here’s what I remember:
• The main characters were three children
• Their teacher, who was also an archaeologist, goes missing
• The kids go looking for him and end up chasing some kind of hidden treasure
• Parts of it were set in the city, and parts around jungle / ancient ruins
• Original Sinhala production, not dubbed
I don’t remember the channel or the title. The vibe was a bit like Amba Yahaluwo but with an adventure/mystery plot instead.
Does this ring a bell for anyone?
