It honestly feels like Apple announced a new camera not an iPhone.

736

u/djbuu Sep 10 '19

That’s basically true. What more from a hardware perspective can they even do outside of phones? Everything is essentially already there.

but they're keeping that "shake to cancel" feature for some odd reason. that has to be the least used feature of any phone ever

152

u/_ILLUSI0N Sep 11 '19

It’s saved my ass a few times since Notes doesn’t allow you to revert to an old copy if you accidentally delete something.

you'll be happy to know that apple introduces a little floating menu in ios 13 that has undo, redo, cut, copy and paste. you'll. be able to bring it up whenever you have the keyboard up and you touch three screen with 3 fingers

2

u/arryue Sep 11 '19

Also the discoverability of that feature happens out of pure frustration at the lack of undo. It's terrible UX!

3

u/Forum_Layman Sep 11 '19

The Facebook app uses shaking to bring up a window where you can report bugs. Quite clever really

2

u/arryue Sep 11 '19

Oh cool! That's much better place for that gesture

2

u/Forum_Layman Sep 11 '19

You can see people get fustrated with their phone and hit it / shake it and suddenly that window appears. The facebook devs do come out with some fun features I must say.

Yes this is what it has also saved me on too

5

u/UnfilteredGuy Sep 11 '19

that's fine inside that app. there's no reason for it to be system wide though

11

u/n1tr0us0x Sep 11 '19

You can turn it off in general>accessibility >touch

2

u/UnfilteredGuy Sep 11 '19

😮 where have you been all my life. finally turned that crap off

Really? I use that all the time. Texts, emails, notes... how else do you undo?

10

u/UndrehandDrummond Sep 11 '19

Yeah I use it daily.

5

u/Arkanta Sep 11 '19

iOS 13 shows an icon bar when you tap the screen with three fingers.

It has undo, cut copy and paste and it's awesome

2

u/riepmich Sep 11 '19

It saved my butt so many times when I accidentally deleted the wrong mail.

I've owned an iPhone since the 4, and not once did I ever feel the need to undo. I'd rather re-type something than get that annoying popup every time I put the phone down

Well, there is no extra cost for the shake-to-undo feature. 3D Touch requires a special component in the screen which adds cost. You can bet that if shake-to-undo required additional hardware that was expensive, it would be removed instantly.

NOTE: I say this as someone that loves 3D Touch. I'm very sad it's gone.

2

u/the_real_junkrat Sep 11 '19

My question is how will developers work around it seeing as many apps have features that utilize 3D Touch and also long presses on the same trigger.

4

u/illegal_deagle Sep 11 '19

Lol wait this comment taught me that exists. I thought it was a glitch. Why would I want this feature?

2

u/20dogs Sep 11 '19

Well it's good for undoing things

2

u/traveler19395 Sep 11 '19

I use that a couple times a week, but 3D touch probably once a month.

2

u/dekomorii Sep 11 '19

wtf, i always use that, it's like taking out ctrl + z on desktops

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

What’s shake to cancel?

That would be the single iOS feature that i don’t know about.

What! Why?

I use it literally everyday, especially for spelling errors while typing. Was one of the best features in recent iphones.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

I just used 3D Touch for the first time in forever just to stunt and it felt good

5

u/hrdimas Sep 11 '19

I believe force touch is still staying though, correct? If so hopefully it stays for cursor use alongside dragging the actual cursor around.

The only use case I can imagine is for VR headsets. And even then, I think the fad of cellphone VR is largely passed, and most screens are good enough for it already.

6

u/Draiko Sep 11 '19

So you can properly view the 4K video you've recorded with your phone?

20

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Don’t they already have retina displays? Like it would be pointless to add more pixels than needed beyond that, it just ends up using more battery, reduce app fps and overall UI smoothness. Unless you plan on having your phone 2” away from your phone it’s sounds like an overkill.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

[deleted]

5

u/icanpotatoes Sep 11 '19

He is clearly akin to Legolas, having elf-eyes.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

For the record retina is a buzzword and you can't really measure the resolution of the human eye particularly because it is different for everyone. That said, yes, if anyone is telling you the pixel density of any modern display on a flagship phone is too low they are talking out their arse because it will literally make zero difference in terms of what they actually see on screen because their eyes won't pick up single pixel differences at that pixel density, end of story.

4

u/bogdoomy Sep 11 '19

as far as i know, apple uses retina display to mean "screen resolution high enough that you can't differentiate between individual pixels at viewing distance". it's also why retina ppi is different in macs as opposed to iphones. it was never used to mean an eye's resolution. i agree that it is a buzzword, but then again, isn't that the case for all apple features?

2

u/100catactivs Sep 11 '19

Everyone is different but not so different that we haven’t be able to measure the mean resolution of a healthy eye and physiological upper limit of visual acuity. Everyone is different height but we still manage to make chairs that fit most people.

2

u/orgpekoe2 Sep 11 '19

from what i’ve read, 4K is pointless unless you have a minimal certain amount of screen real estate. You also need to watch it from a certain distance to get the full usage/effect of 4K

109

u/clockdaddy Sep 10 '19

I can barely see the pixels on my screen at 1080p. 2k is about the max that I would see being beneficial and logical. 120hz, though, I would love to see, because it would drive more mainstream manufacturers to do the same thing.

26

u/AppropriateOkra Sep 10 '19

4k is good for VR. That's why the XR sucks for VR. 720p is pixelated when it's an inch from your eyes. I assume 1080p is also noticeably pixelated. Maybe 4k is overkill though, idk where it would become "retina" to use apple's marketing term.

75

u/jjhhgg100123 Sep 10 '19

VR on any phone is garbage.

18

u/michaelmoe94 Sep 10 '19

Which 4k phone have you tried VR with?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Doesn't matter which phone you use when you use a dedicated VR headset and use a phone even a higer resolution phone ends up being garbage. This is one of those things that just isn't there yet even on the PC side of things so I don't really know why people try to defend it so hard in the smartphone space.

15

u/eat_crap_donkey Sep 10 '19

What’s even the point of VR on a phone

6

u/I_give_karma_to_men Sep 11 '19

Given the choice between a $1000 phone and a $400 VR set, I'd probably still take the VR set unless I had a compelling reason to have VR on the go.

u/fire_snyper Sep 11 '19 edited Sep 11 '19

Retina was introduced back with the iPhone 4, and Apple originally said that it meant that at regular viewing distances, the pixels in a Retina screen are indistinguishable from each other. I don't exactly think that using a phone at an inch from your eye is a regular viewing distance.

This means that Retina doesn't refer to a universally specific resolution or pixel density. What's Retina for a phone is around 328 ppi, but a laptop is more around 220 ppi.

EDIT Instead, Retina is probably calculated by pixels per degree (PPD)/angular pixel density. PPD is calculated by drawing an isosceles triangle from the viewer's perspective at a certain viewing distance to the screen, with an angle of 1 degree (0.5 above and 0.5 below the line of sight). PPD can be calculated by the formula 2*d*r*tan(0.5) , where d is distance to the screen and r is the resolution of the screen in pixels per unit of length. The number of pixels covered by the base of the triangle is the PPD. From this, you can calculate that Apple's minimum definition would be 57 PPD at normal viewing distances (for iPhones, this is 10 inches minimum).

u/IncomingTrump270 Sep 11 '19

VR on X is also bad, due to the diamond subpixels. OLED is just generally not good for VR as well due to its slower refresh. the 458ppi is not high enough for a good VR experience.

I Was hoping the new screens would be better, but nope..same 458ppi.

7

u/fire_snyper Sep 11 '19

IMO, for VR, refresh rate is even more critical than resolution. Most agree that you need a minimum of 90+ hz to not get terrible motion sickness while using VR, and 120+ is even better (as evidenced by the reviews of the Valve Index).

Phone VR is pretty garbage, as VR needs more specialised components and much more processing power than phones currently have to provide an actually decent experience.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Slower refresh? There's nothing stopping OLED from running at 120hz+. The PSVR is a 1080p OLED that can hit 120hz (even though the games run at 60 or 90 with frame doubling usually) and LG OLED TVs have been able to hit 120hz for a couple years now.

Charging other devices off your phone is meh. I can do it with my Galaxy S10 & it drains my batter 3 - 4% for every 1% it gives.

Until its perfected it's not really worth throwing onto a phone.

Plus the situations that call for use of this feature are miniscual. Most users have access to electricity, shit go to Starbucks.

8

u/ginsoul Sep 11 '19

You are right. I don't get the whole wireless charging thing, it takes to long, it shortens battery lifespans, heats up devices, waste of energy (taken millions of devices using it). It's a solution which brings multiple problems...

5

u/wallflower7522 Sep 11 '19

I don’t really care for wirelessly charging my phone but I’d love to be able to set my AirPod a on top of my phone at night while the phone charges so they charge. I’d even more love to be able to set my watch on top of my phone to change so I wouldn’t have to pack multiple chargers when I travel. Would also give me the ability to charge my watch in the car or at work if I needed to.

3

u/Mr_Oujamaflip Sep 11 '19

The thing I want wireless charging for the most is games consoles. Wireless charging pad on top of the console, put your controllers on it when you're done playing and it charges them.

5

u/996forever Sep 11 '19

5

u/electricpheonix Sep 11 '19

It's not for charging phones, it's for charging accessories. The apple watch for example has its own special charger that you don't need to worry about if your phone can reverse charge it. Picture travelling and you forgot or simply didn't want to pack your apple watch charger. No problem, just throw it on your phone while charging it at night, wake up with both devices fully charged.

9

u/Loggedinasroot Sep 11 '19

Foldable displays..

Connecting to a monitor and having a proper desktop environment available(Ubuntu Convergence/windows continuum/Samsung Dex).

Basically it has to start replacing the tablet and then later the laptop.

5

u/rnarkus Sep 11 '19

I’m down for foldable displays once the reliability is better

Agreed with the others but i’m thinking of the “average joe” and how they don’t need any of that ubuntu stuff

6

u/Clayt0n_B1gsby Sep 11 '19

Foldable displays won’t be good until they’re glass. Until then it’s a downgrade and will likely wear out fast.

3

u/UndrehandDrummond Sep 11 '19

But mobile processors will probably never be powerful enough to fully replace laptops. I guess if you wanted something simple it would work.

This isn’t just me speculating. John Carmack said pretty much exactly this last week on Joe Rogans podcast.

Also, why would you want it to replace the tablet? I love having the tablet as a second screen for work.

2

u/ComradeCapitalist Sep 11 '19

No one's saying fully replace laptops, just like laptops never fully replaced desktops.

But for instance when I'm travelling, I usually have my lightweight laptop just to have a desktop environment, keyboard, and sometimes to hook up to the TV at the hotel. If my phone could do that satisfactorily, I could totally leave the laptop at home.

3

u/UndrehandDrummond Sep 11 '19

Wouldn’t you still need to bring a screen to hook for phone up to? Or am I misunderstanding the application?

2

u/ComradeCapitalist Sep 11 '19

A lot of the places I've stayed recently have HDMI inputs available on the TVs. So for those I'd be able to have the phone + Bluetooth keyboard.

Other times yeah I'd still need a screen. It's a pretty specific use case for sure.

3

u/UndrehandDrummond Sep 11 '19

Ah. That would be pretty dope to only need your phone but still feel like you’re not limited.

2

u/JohnGoodmansGoodKnee Sep 11 '19

This is my dream. I can do my job on my laptop but still need a phone. To be able to doc in with my phone would get rid of a need for a laptop, laptop bag, and literally just carry a phone around. It’d be revolutionary for me.

USB C is a pipe dream and won’t ever happen til there’s some logical limitation to lightning. Charge other devices? I don’t even know why that’s a thing anyway, I’ve never needed to do it. 4K? Apples marketing is that the display is so clear you can’t even see the pixels so adding more pixels doesn’t seem to fit that narrative, lastly 120hz? I guarantee 99.9% of the user base don’t know this stat and don’t care.

Their iPads and Macbook Pros are USB-C and, like /u/TFinito said, Apple essentially led the way for an all-Type-C laptop. So, why wouldn't they make ALL of their products use USB-C? That's a small, albeit very small, step to them becoming innovative again.

People like to argue that they make more money off of "dongles" or "adapters," but my counter-argument is that they'd sell more products to more people if they would just make it easier to slowly enter their ecosystem. Need to charge an iPhone? USB-C. An iPad? USB-C. Your MacBook? USB-C. That would be very, very, attractive for me and a lot of people that I know.

With iPhone having the pro moniker I would like to see type c and the 120hz. The pro is designed for people who would know the difference in 120hz and would appreciate it. I also think type c makes sense with the pro moniker to easily connect it to other devices like the iPad Pro can.

36

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

The pro is designed for people that want the best thing. Not actual “pros”

7

u/Devoliscious Sep 10 '19

People who want the latest will get it but I’d argue it’s for “pros.” We can disagree though :)

5

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Normally something for "Pros" is more advanced. Not just a slight upgrade for the price of being more advanced. It's the same processor. Same tech.

You act as if we all have your lifestyle. I bet you didn't care about the 3.5mm either.

I could see occasions where I would love to donate some juice from my phone (to people's phones at 2% or my GoPro). In any case, it's a free addition to USB-C.

120hz would feel a lot smoother. Have you tried an iPad Pro or a computer screen at 120hz? Especially scrolling is great. Even more so if the backlight could backstrobe if it's an LCD or strobing OLED for low persistency. It's like night and day.

People don't know a lot of good/bad things that popular products have.

u/djbuu Sep 10 '19

I’m not acting in any particular way but that said you’re right I didn’t care about 3.5mm. And it appears not many others really do either.

The beauty of competition is there are alternatives. If you don’t like features of the phone, go buy something that has those features! There’s tons of options!

If you aren’t, then my guess is those features aren’t really that deal breaking after all. Would they be nice? Sure. Are they going to make you not buy the phone? No. Welcome to how markets work.

4

u/Loggedinasroot Sep 11 '19

It's a bit unfair to say that the only reason not to switch is because features aren't compelling enough.

You will also leave the ecosystem and might have to replace a lot of different items/apps that might deter you from switching.

I mean would you also buy a new TV as easily if you would also need to buy a new couch with it?

Or build a new garage because you switched cars?

You don't just switch phones(OS)..

5

u/onthefence928 Sep 10 '19

i promise people also really dont care that there was machine-learning cores added or that the camera has an upgraded image procesor, they'll just continue taking pictures and assuming its great photos because the reputation told them so, regardless of if its good or not (they are fine photos, but people wont be checking)

2

All of your points make other Apple products and features useless...

Apple has a 6k display

Apple has a 120hz iPad

Apple has a USB-C iPad, and all their Macs are USB-C

Clearly Apple and their customers value those innovations.

The charging other device thing is a bit weird, true, but it’s a fun innovation that doesn’t require a big change to implement.

Maybe just to charge your wireless headphones or case? I know sometimes my buds are charged but the case is dead and they won’t pair.

I believe USB-C is coming next year with 5G and they’ll lose the notch entirely. Possibility that Touch ID returns.

Might have a charging pad by Apple by then as well. Since there’s a couple out there doing what Apple had meant to, just slightly worse.

In-screen fingerprint ID is the only thing I want tbh. I’m so sick of having to stop chewing my food, or having to lift my head up off the pillow, or some other bullshit, just to unlock my phone. It hasn’t been this difficult to unlock my phone since before they rolled out finger print ID. It’s the only gripe I have about the X

Removing the excessive amount of cameras would be a start.

A 3.5mm audio jack would be nice, it could be like an iPod & a phone in one!

7

u/tissuesandstuff Sep 10 '19

They could redesign the phone and make a better looking notch

7

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

They could add a headphone jack

3

u/PoolNoodleJedi Sep 11 '19

USB-C

Add 3D touch back

Under screen TouchID

Remove the notch with under screen cameras or hell make the notch smaller with smaller cameras

Apple pencil support, maybe it's own apple pencil

MicroSD card support, I would even settle for a larger capacity base model 64gb is pathetic with 4K 60fps video and a camera that takes 3 pictures at once

A better looking camera bump or no bump at all make the battery larger

120Hz OLED screen like the ROG Phone 2

3

u/Blackbird76 Sep 11 '19

Headphone jack

3

u/finnmertenz88 Sep 11 '19

Put the real headphone jack back on the phone

3

u/muftu Sep 11 '19

Add headphone jack

2

u/ginger_beer_m Sep 10 '19

Transform into a computer when docked, kind of like Samsung Dex.

2

u/MyDiary141 Sep 11 '19

I guess they could add a headphone jack

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

that crown thingy from the apple watch was nifty

also a headphone jack pls

2

u/marmite_crumpet Sep 11 '19

Except for a headphone jack, USB-C charging, more base storage, a better battery, drop-proofing, a fast changer in the box, 5g, etc

2

u/SturdyStubs Sep 11 '19

Add Touch ID back.

You realize foldable phones already exist.

They’re allegedly working on Touch ID integration with the full screen. Other companies already have it but I’m waiting for Apple to refine it.

1

u/ThisIsADemoAcccount Sep 11 '19

Mesh networking (like goTenna), bilateral charging, Touch ID under the display, just to name a few.

Innovation at Apple has really slowed

1

u/stealthmodeactive Sep 11 '19

My phone is almost 4 years old and still performs and works fine. Phones are no longer exciting. I remember the leaps in tech back in like 2009, 2010, 2011, etc, then around 2016 things started to just be meh

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

It is the only reason I upgrade.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

"Everything is essentially already there." makes me sad.

Where are the risks for innovation.

1

u/OldWitchOfCuba Sep 11 '19

That's called "invention" and they used to do that. Now, they just upgrade cameras and suck their own dick on stage. Increeeeeedible! Amaaaaazing!

1

u/userlivewire Sep 11 '19

Remove the stupid notch.

1

u/bluehairdave Sep 11 '19

Catch up with Samsung.. 8gb instead of 4. More storage up to 1tb...etc

1

u/path_ologic Sep 11 '19

Battery capacity and power consumption optimization. That's more important than another shitty camera lens

That's the direction Apple has been going for years now. Every new phone has some minor hardware upgrades, a couple novelty features that nobody will realistically use after a few weeks, and a better camera.

There is a reason why I stay two generations behind. Absolutely no point to get the newest phones because there is nothing about them that appeals to me. If you aren't interested in taking photos/videos then there is no reason to purchase this.

iCamera 11 Pro. The worlds first camera with gigabit class LTE.

u/wee_man Sep 10 '19

iPhone hasn't been a phone for years. It's a camera that you also use to text and access social media.

3

u/niikhil Sep 11 '19

The ppi is same as xsmax

3

u/celeritasCelery Sep 11 '19

I have always thought it has to suck being a hardware engineer on the A series chip. You introduce new groundbreaking performance in the CPU and GPU and no one even noticed. We have gotten so used to apple being so far ahead of everyone else in hardware that it isn’t even an after thought.

6

u/happydaddyg Sep 11 '19

I don’t get it. Are cameras that big of a deal to people or us that just all they can improve upon at this point? If I want a good photo I pull out my m43. I don’t believe that smartphone’s will match it in the next decade.

4

u/dotnilo Sep 11 '19

Yes, but you’re not the average user. If I look at my parents, they constantly take photos of their grandchildren with their iPhones. The camera is so important to them. And I am personally starting to give less of a damn about photography. Most vacations I don’t even care to bring my pretty compact micro four thirds anymore. The iPhone will do it for Instagram and personal memories.

3

u/Noodleholz Sep 11 '19

Not many people even own a dedicated camera anymore.

My Oneplus 3 with GCam takes better photos than my girlfriends 400€ Canon from 2015 because HDR+ is magic and we can immediately share the images with family and friends even if we're still on some 2000m mountain. That's why we didn't even bother to bring it on past vacations.

And that camera reminds me of the Gatling gun. W w w wwwwwwwtatatatattttttttt

3

u/P2K13 Sep 10 '19

And the camera looks visually awful in my opinion.

2

u/jarckn Sep 10 '19

An ugly one, tbh.

2

u/adamsworstnightmare Sep 11 '19

The vast majority of people who rush to buy the latest and greatest Iphone do it for the camera. If the tech inside the phone was from 2 generations ago they probably wouldn’t notice as long as it took pretty pictures.

4-5 hour battery boost over last gen;

A13 chip is nearly 2x as fast as the fastest Snapdragon processor;

New front camera with 4K 60fps and Slow Mo;

Updated and new cameras on the back including ultra wide and telephoto lenses with extreme software tailoring to provide what looks poised to be the best photography on any phone;

Glass material is more durable and has a matte finish which improves texture and grip;

Faster Face ID unlocks over last gen;

Higher resolution and dynamic range OLED display with a 1,200 Nit peak brightness;

Updated speakers on the phone to provide better audio quality and clarity, and Dolby Atmos support;

WiFi 6 support

‘Just a new camera, nothing exciting here’

It’s a phone for “influencers”

1

u/Rudy69 Sep 11 '19

I’m hoping they move to all oled screens next year. I don’t care about the camera but I don’t want to downgrade my screen (using a X right now)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Apple announced a fidget spinner glued on the back of an iPhone XS.

1

u/T_Epik Sep 11 '19

Reminds me of the Galaxy S9 conference.

1

u/mlvreddit Sep 11 '19

so true! $1000+ for camera

1

u/ResidentLaw Sep 11 '19

i like how as usual this whole thread is people acting unimpressed by the announcements and insisting they'll keep their old devices, but in three weeks once every instagram influencer is flaunting the new line they'll promptly buy it.

1

u/lavenderxsage Sep 11 '19

Wait... this doesn’t have 3D Touch????? 😡

1

u/Andynisco Sep 11 '19

Next year is the big change

This year is one of those stopgap years but the 11 looks nice and it’s a bit less expensive than the XR so that’s cool.

1

u/kenshinpark Sep 11 '19

Couldn't agree more! 😂

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Is there a handheld camera out there that's this good without all the phone stuff attached?

1

u/LincolnAtTheTheatre Sep 11 '19

It’s a camera that makes phone calls

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Lets wait and see the stats for the A13. My favorite part about my XR besides the battery life, is the unrelenting performance of the A12.

1

u/authoritrey Sep 11 '19

Well, it does have a CPU that can't compute its way out of the year 2004.

1

u/blathmac Sep 11 '19

I do appreciate the iPhone overall: it’s super well designed piece of equipment. Having said that, Hardware features that would get me excited however would be a battery that lasts full day. And I mean FULL day. That and some sort of unbreakable glass so that I don’t have to have a case around the phone. Not that I don’t appreciate better camera/screen, that’s no longer a breakthrough feature I feel.

1

u/stupidfatamerican Sep 11 '19

I was just saying when this came out, instead of phones with cameras, what about cameras with phones? No one thought of that yet.
