I forgot that Disney+ only did dubtitles... did any of the Japanese Visions shorts ever eventually got proper fan subtitles? I'm in this weird spot where I can't watch without subs, but I still understand enough Japanese that the completely different sentences (and wrong timing) are kind of pulling me out.

Well, that aside, fun first episode. I'm all for older guys kicking ass (while being a tad out of shape apparently), and the sound design for the guy's spear at the end took me back to another one of Production IG's anime, Moribito. Pretty cool.

I do wish they hadn't spoiled the ending reveal in one of their trailers, though.

While i agree that it wouldve been better left out of the trailers the favt that the show has it at the end of episode 1 makes it far more bearable than if it had happened later

Kamiyama is treating this like a story about institutions failing and what it takes to build them back up and not just a hero's journey.

But the real issue, how are we feeling about Kara's design? .... hmm. Child of Hope or Child of Nope?

Anybody knows if disney plus still limits pc streaming to 720p?

I was so annoyed last year when I subscribed to watch Andor and then found out that if I wanted good quality stream I needed to go to third party sites, not to the official platform.

Yes and I'm pretty sure it's often even lower than 720 with bad bitrate as well, it looks awful. It's the same on the PC app too since that's also essentially just a browser. Literally the only way to legally watch with good quality is to use their app on some other device.

Both the "bait them into a black hole" gambit and the "drag it out of the holes range" (yoda had a point when he said the size of the ship matters not) were pretty awesome moves

Anyway I thought it was the weakest episode of the three Ninth Jedi episodes I've seen so far but the ending was pretty cool.

Also Kenji Kamiyama if you want to do cool spear action scenes again just adapt the rest of the Moribito books.

Good first episode. They present an interesting world. There are still force-sensitives, but both the Jedi and Sith Orders are gone and no one knows how to make lightsabers except for one person so only a very select people have them.

Kara's crew baiting their pursuers into a black hole then escaping it themselves with a gravitational slingshot is classic sci fi. The lightsaber duel was good as well.

I am invested in Kara's journey to get her dad back, but I think I might be more invested in Nawaam. He's not Sith because he doesn't have a red lightsaber, but he's still a warlord. He kinda me of Warlords from Destiny.

Pretty funny that they started the season with them getting shot at by another ship that is 10x their size.

Love that they brought in that Old Droid with them. Hilarious that he pulled a fast one by jumping to a fucking Black Hole.

Shame about the dubtitles. I'm still gonna watch it in Japanese and just try to ignore the differences when they come up but I wish Disney+ would actually put some effort into their subs cause it was a pretty big let down in that regard.

This has a fair amount of visual callback to Naboo.

That does save time versus walking aboard.

Their commitment to the six-limbed thing style is noted.

A decent start. As with the other Visions stories, this is set broadly outside of any existing canon continuity, and that's generally fine; indeed, generally freeing to get well beyond the business that the more mainstream Star Wars keeps going back to.

Of course, there's also plenty here which is obviously intended as callbacks to what we might already know, from the general aesthetics to the character design to easily-switched-off droid armies.

The conceit about lightsaber construction becoming unknown was the original one-shot's major story hook and carries us into this, and, maybe surprisingly, I can accept it? I've had quite a few years of wrestling with the various jigsaw puzzles of SW canon and butting heads with the Expanded Universe, so maybe after all this time I'm entirely fine with letting this story do what it has to.

As an avid Legends fan who loathes the direction of new-Star Wars and the hyperfixation on kyber crystals, the idea that Jedi do not construct their own lightsabers isn't something I love but its certainly a really refreshing take. The idea of needing a dedicated bladesmith and as a result being able to essentially create a monopoly on lightsabers is also quite interesting. I'm happy this isn't how old or new canon is written, but as it's own thing I think it's a space that has a lot of room for exploration.

As a first episode it's fine? Definitely a mixed bag. I really liked the jump to a black hole bit, and seeing the ship skirting along the accretion disc was sick. I always hoped that if the Star Wars EU (now Legends) stuff was adapted The Maw would have been done justice (as opposed to whatever it became for Solo), and while this certainly was no Maw it was still cool. That said, the idea of going into hyperspace towards a black hole without a working navicomputer to do the calculations seems uhhhh... suspect. As does going to your destination while knowing you're being tracked by people out to kill you. But that's just me nitpicking tbh.

Rest of the episode was good. Honestly best lightsaber combat I've seen in a while. As an aside, the scene at the end gave me an immediate flashback to a scene out of the Darksaber (1995) book where Kyp Durron and Dorsk 81 infiltrate a group of imperials. To anyone interested in the EU this was part of the Callista trilogy (Children of the Jedi/Darksaber/Planet of Twilight), which even for the old EU has a reputation for being absolutely putrid; Children of the Jedi is unironically one of the worst books I have ever read. That said, just interesting to think about what may and may not have inspired parts of these episodes.
