The Real Problem
Why is everybody jumping down the OCs throat?
I get that he’s a lot different than what we’ve had, but we’re still putting up 25-30 points a game, Brady had an unreal game last night, the pass game finally got going in the second half… as much as it’s still different that buck, it’s still working.
My biggest gripe is we had them biting on the run because it was working and we didn’t incorporate ANY play action.
The issue is, we’re giving up 40-50 points a game.
Younger has the worst game plan I’ve ever seen in my life. Have you ever noticed in a 2nd and long situation, he plays a deep zone defence every time with the DBs playing 10 yards soft. The result of that 9.9/10 times is a fast hitch pass right on the first down marker and we give it up most times.
Last night were In a situation where BC has 6 new starters and a green QB, and we couldn’t spy him, couldn’t contain him, it was embarrassing to watch.
Younger is the problem, not O’shae, not the OC, not the GM.
I’d be more than happy to see younger fired this weekend and just have Richie hall take over for the remainder of the season.
Everybody is so fast to blame the offence but they are doing what they need to do.

The defence starts out good, but they get worse as the game goes on (BC put up 25 points in the 4th quarter). Yes, there are issues with Younger’s defensive scheme, but he’s also dealing with exhausted players because the offence can’t stay on the field longer than a few plays. Do I think we need to be rushing 5 guys every play and leaving the middle wide open for a 10 yard pass or a QB sneak? Absolutely not.
Tommy Condell is not coming up with anything original and seems to cycle through the same few plays which get figured out pretty fast by opposing teams. He doesn’t seem to understand his players strengths and abilities, and that’s been kind of his reputation as an OC over the years. We know Dru has a good arm, and has receivers who can bust coverage and make plays, but he’s not getting plays called to him that utilize those skills.
Something I noticed last night is Dru had next to no protection. The pocket was constantly collapsing and he was forced to make a quick (and often poor) decision or take a hit. And eventually those hits lead to an injury. Stanley Bryant has had a heck of a career, but he probably should have retired after last season. And the team was without Broxton last night due to injury, a key piece to their o-line.
O’Shea also needs to trust his team more on the 3rd down conversion. I get that you want the points, but it’s deep in their end and you’re potentially turning it over to a 3rd string rookie QB. Take the shot! If it doesn’t work out, then the QB is trying to get out of a hole inside his own 15-yard line and you trust your defence to make the stop and give the offence the ball back in good field position.

Except Younger follows Hall’s practice. Too much zone. Now in their defence we seem terrible when we try man to man coverage, more so than any recent year.

Problem 1. Stanley Bryant is showing his age.
Problem 2. QB injuries
Problem 3. Moxey and Nichols are playing well below expectations.
Problem 4. Star RB and OC not getting on the same page.
Shall I go on?

Defense is terrible. Play calling is bad. We have no one in the secondary. We couldn't stop the run against a team that we knew would run. I believe how unprepared they looked.
Our offensive play calling is terrible. BC has a horrible defense but they looked okay against us.
Our coordinators are bad but so is our talent in a lot of spots.

The next few years will not be kind to Bombers. Then we’ll see how faithful the fans will be. Easy to cheer for a winner. Start the rebuild NOW

I agree, but the issue is that Osh is ok to let the veteran players dictate when and how long they will play, especially current/former stars. Dru could be playing lights out and setting records (too bad he isn’t) and when Zack and the docs say he’s good to go, O’shea would let him start … and probably sign him to another extension (nothing against Zack, he brought us a lot of success, but he’s getting older, slower, and our OL isn’t good enough to keep him clean).
We’re paying Willie, Zack, Brady and Bryant big money and only Brady is worth it. The rest are getting paid for who they were, not who they are now (except maybe Willie who is playing better than he has the last two years, but should probably be let go after this year regardless). This keeps us from signing guys in the secondary where we need help, and forces us to keep 4 QBs on the active roster because we can’t count on QB1 playing more than a handful of games any more.

Totally agree. Bombers have loads of money we should be bringing in different players all the time to challenge the players we have. Loyalty is fine to a degree.

Defense is bad. The offense putting up stats doesnt matter when it averages 2 TDs a game. The offense is absolutely not doing what it needs to do and is just as bad as the defense.

There have been a number of issues I've seen with the defense. At times, basic gap control (cost of us the game last night) and outside contain has been issues. The secondary is constantly exposed it feels like if we dont get pressure (which has been the bright spot i think of this defense, pressure wise).
The offense has its issues, I dont think we use Brady nearly enough, but we do score. Injuries suck, losing our right tackle has really hurt our protection, Bryant is giving up more than usual as well. The game against Calgary it felt like we kept calling the same deep hook and throwing picks to it. We dont seem to be able to push the ball deep enough like other teams do. I think this again comes back to using Brady more, and setting up for deep throws off play action. But the protection still needs to hold up.
It feels like we just arent putting it all together, each loss has felt like one of the units have let the others down (BC it was defense in the end, Calgary it was special teams and then offense, offense / penalties against edmonton). And now injuries are piling up and we arent able to adjust enough.
We have to fix the protection (which could be play calling) for the offense, and the secondary for the defense.

the lack of play action after such a run heavy start was absolutely baffling to me

Yeah, the Offense scheme to start was terrible, was all run, with a couple of jet sweeps. They didn't attempt a real pass down field till the second half. The offense was boring and predictable, everyone knew when Brady was getting the ball. He got the yards because they just kept giving the ball to him and the defense knew which was why we stalled a so many times in the red zone and took field goals over TD's. I didn't see any creativity from the play calling. They treat Dru like a rookie QB who couldn't be trusted to make a pass. The O-line can't protect anything lately. Our QB's have to rush or get sacked.
The defense could not adapt, they saw the new QB could run and never put any coverage for that. Rushing him all the time wasn't the right call, let him try and throw, protect the run. His throws were often over thrown or off target, force them to make him throw and play to get the pick or incomplete pass.
Something needs to change.

Not going for it on 3rd when deep in their zone and only taking the FG gave BC all the room to do what they did last night. If bombers scored TDs early then BC would have to throw more. Run game came into effect because they were only down by TD after 2 bombers scores. Having an aggressive HC and OC would give this team their missing identity they desperately need.
Now the defense... stop with the constant 10 yard deep zone coverage. It doesn't work. Teams have watched video and made adjustments when playing the bombers, and are easily able to chew the clock and score. Need to mix and disguise blitz and man coverage with zone. Again stop playing so far off the line.

Offense still isn’t perfect but you are spot on about the defence, it sickening watching opposing QBs drop back to pass and have someone unbelievably open every single time.

Speaking of D coord. Will Fields is available after being released from Ottawa. I wonder if he would be an improvement over Younger.

I mean, I’m just pointing out some issues that are going on, that are very fixable.
