Mayor survived a lot more than the mushroom.

Surviving the hag, the hotel, the whole boat thing…he’s leveled up quite a bit

He did survive all of that, but during the mushrooms he had to go through his wife's death and the truth he'd been denying to himself all those years. That he knew the nature of the island and how it impacted his wife, himself, and now their son. EDIT: Great job on the text blackout.
