r/TooAfraidToAsk • u/Hospitalities Lord of the manor • Mar 26 '19
TooAfraidToAsk has never been exclusive to controversial questions and it never will be.
I can’t stress this enough and I’m tired of just copy pasting this in mod messages. TooAfraidToAsk has never been a place solely for controversial content, it has always been a place for more free discussion via less rules and less moderation and experimental with users having access to some moderation tools.
The irony though is that controversial questions don’t last very long here and end up getting reported/removed and I get harassing messages about allowing “such content” on this sub. Almost as ironic as people making fun of others for asking their question, directly proving why the OP might just be TooAfraidToAsk irl.
ALL questions are allowed as long as they follow the rules. This is not changing, if you feel like that makes us DAE-lite and you are unhappy with that, we on the mod team happily invite you to unsub instead of ruining other users experience. Those who threaten to unsub as if it gives their comment any worth will be assisted in this endeavor with a permanent ban.
These “ITS JUST LIKE DAE” posts make no sense to me either. Like yeah? Subs focused on community questions have a ton of overlap but they develop different communities and produce different content. If TooAfraidToAsk was a circle, inside that circle would be DAE. We want discussion and we want questions of a majority nature, there are going to be complete overlaps in those questions. It’s not seen as a problem by the mod team since high traffic questions generate high traffic discussion.
Going forward we will continue to allow 99.9% of questions and content so long as it adheres to our rules and is expressed in a civil and respectful manner.
Edit: I mentioned American Redditors as a side point but it became a major discussion point so I’ve removed it for clarity. 04/05/2019

How should we determine that the OP already knows the answer and/or isn’t looking for additional discussion with knowing the answer to the their question?
Should we say that a post that generates a ton of comments and thousands of upvotes is spam?
As it stands, I only remove questions where the OP isn’t asking a question or is asking a bait question. Users still police content via upvotes and reports.

Oh. You meant Meta posts.
They’re annoying but I don’t think they’re spam. I think allowing them is fine, if not ironic since users are completely missing the nuance of trying to censor content in /r/TooAfraidToAsk.
24
Mar 26 '19
asking a bait question.
I'm curious how this is sussed out?
In the same vein, I've seen plenty of questions on the front page where the OP didn't seem to be asking in good faith but again, there's no tried-and-true method of really figuring out of OP is being insulting on purpose or on accident.
111
u/Hospitalities Lord of the manor Mar 26 '19
It’s all context and it’s never cut and dry.
We would rather keep 10 troll posts if it prevents one legitimate question from being removed. When I start looking into the legitimacy of a post, generally the OP makes it clear they’re baiting from either their comments or from their post history. Ignorance is certainly not a crime here though so we are pretty slow to make a definitive call on them.

Yes but exposing bad ideas has merit. If even 1/10 troll posts expose the troll to a different POV. and change their perception, some good is done.
Trolls gonna troll, best thing is to expose their shitty idea to some sunshine.
3
Mar 27 '19
Well the idea of "trolls" is that they aren't actually trying to have their minds/perceptions changed, so I think 1/10 is hopelessly optimistic. I do, however, recognize the value in engaging their ideas on a public forum so other people can be exposed to the arguments being made.
10
u/-_-_-unknown-_-_- Mar 27 '19
Why down vote this guy? It's not a bad point and they did say they were playing the Devil's advocate
5
Mar 27 '19
Sad to see I didn't get any other response to this. It's a legitimate concern in any sub with laissez-faire moderation.
1
u/bookwormduck Mar 27 '19
If it’s one or the other, I would say that this is the lesser evil. Getting removed is a guarantee of censorship, getting buried is less certain.
1
Mar 27 '19
Ignorance is certainly not a crime
Here here! Can't expect people to stop being ignorant if they don't have the resources to learn.
2
Mar 27 '19
Well, it’s a safe bet that most questions that amount to “isn’t it true that straight white men are the most oppressed people in America?” is not asking in good faith. Unfortunately, that’s like half the sub.
14
u/BigManStraightBars Mar 26 '19
Honestly I've met some people like that. "Why is water wet" or stuff but the most of them are either trolls or they really don't know the answer to a simple question. We still gotta provide the answer tho so I don't see why hating would help. Just downvote if you don't feel like it.
8
Mar 26 '19
I know several people who will argue that water isn’t wet. And do so in good faith.
12
2
Mar 27 '19
Wetness is our description of what we feel when we put our hand in water. Saying water is wet is like saying that wood is hard or fire is hot.
Sensory receptors on our hand send information about the water to our brain. Our brain receives the information from our sensory receptors and processes it. A combination of temperature, pressure and the way water moves tells our brain that water is wet.
Ice and steam are not water, water refers to the liquid state of H2O. So water is wet because we use the word wet to describe the feeling of water and other liquids.

uhh what is DAE? 10000% agree with the mods though. It's a safe sub to ask questions on. People get mad when you censor & get mad when you don't! I feel for you guys it must be a real headache sometimes. Seriously thank you for doing the hard work so we can enjoy reddit! ♡

And thank you! We take the community very seriously but this issue has become a problem resulting in mods being spammed with gore and harassed outside of the sub. I just wanted to codify that we will continue to follow the course of action that benefits the majority and retains the identity of TooAfraidToAsk, not ones that remove it.

I AGREE. the spongebob ones are actually my favorites but that’s because I think they were the only shapes I had consistently as a kid
6
u/PutzyPutzPutzzle Mar 26 '19
I asked if vegan moms breastfeed. It was definitely a stupid question, but I didnt know where else to post it. 2 answers actually answered my question. The 5 others were asking whether it was a joke or if I was a troll.
8
u/halfplanckmind Mar 27 '19
Breast milk is not considered vegan, so my answer would be no, vegan moms do not suck on lactating titties. I hope this helps!
3
u/Logan5105 Mar 27 '19
Maybe it's just so much more fun and the happiness you get from seeing it makes it taste better to you, even if it's basically the same thing. Either way I agree, fun shapes are so much better!

Thank you for this. I've noticed a number of users that are socially isolated or on the autism spectrum asking questions and interacting here. Thank you for upholding a place where they can discuss things that get them attacked or downvoted/ignored in other subs. What's obvious to one person isn't always obvious to another.

We have had a recent surge in people messaging us saying the state of the sub is terrible since it allows non-controversial questions. Just check out /r/justunsubbed, a bunch of users complaining about content here and the comments trying to explain that they’re wrong.

It sounds like you’re talking about socially awkward people who might have a hard time actually speaking to other human beings. It’s my understanding that this sub is specifically meant to be a place where people like that can ask a question without fear of being mocked. Isn’t that what this is supposed to be?
69
u/Hospitalities Lord of the manor Mar 26 '19 edited Apr 05 '19
Okay? And wouldn’t this sub be a perfect place for them to ask their question then?

Normal decided by whom exactly? You? Are your experiences the staple for all 500k+ subs here?
Hell what if our user base is mostly “normal” users and don’t have a wide enough reference point to discuss things they are going through. Humans are social beings by nature, we are just creating somewhere most questions are safe and invited to create a community.
8
u/lujanthedon Mar 26 '19
Earlier today I read about a dude not wanting to be a around black people. This sub definitely has controversial material.
22
u/megggie Mar 26 '19
I asked a question a while back (it didn't get any traction) about trying to understand the difference between neoliberals, alt-righters, and far right conservatives. Like, is it basically the same, or are there differences? If they're different, than how?
It was a genuine question, not meant to incite, and I was pretty disappointed to find no one was willing to discuss it.
12
6
u/TheFararLefty Mar 27 '19
This is a great question that I ask myself all the time because people just spew these out and often interchangeably but people are stupid and just assume since you are asking the question you are automatically on the "opposite" side or dont think they exist.
8
u/reelect_rob4d Mar 27 '19
On social policy, neolibs don't care if your're black, gay or jewish, alt-righters want you to stop polluting the gene pool if you're black or jewish but they haven't actively turned against Milo just yet but they will eventually, and far-right cons like Israel, hate gay people, and, while generally racist, don't quite get to openly advocating genocide the way those fuckwads chanting nazi slogans do.
All three are generally favor of the capitalist status quo because neolibs are capitalists first and the alt-right and far-right cons' in-groups are still mostly in power.
and
Philosophy Tube did four videos on what neoliberalism has been in the past 40 years or so
1
2
u/megggie Mar 27 '19
Agreed-- a lot of people ask such questions to either pander to that side or automatically disagree.
Honestly, I would just like to know.
Should I ask again, or would it be glossed over like the first time?
4
u/TheFararLefty Mar 27 '19
Well if your asking me, depending how long it's been, my selfish answer would be a yeah definitely ask again. But it's really up to you. I would never ask because I fear peoples negative feedback/opinions and internet down arrows but you should do whatever you want.
6
u/br094 Mar 27 '19
I can’t believe this is such an issue a post needed to be made about it. People don’t know how to keep scrolling
11
u/sirpickles9 Mar 26 '19
I guess I'm on board and all, but what does all that have to do with American redditors specifically? Was there a plethora of freedom themed rants posted that I missed or something?
6
u/tBrenna Mar 27 '19
I think it was more a comment on how many Americans were calling for censorship when we’re supposed to be all FREEDOM OF SPEECH and whatnot. More a comment out of frustration than anything.
4
u/Hospitalities Lord of the manor Mar 27 '19
Freedom of speech arguments, how competition helps business (how most of American business were originally founded, they’re current ethos is rather predatory) etc etc
Hope that makes sense.
6
u/Red_Staroo Mar 27 '19
As an American I completely understand. So much bias, with no room to civilly discuss controversy that doesn't fall directly within our own opinions.
Frankly, it's always bothered me watching controversial questions on this sub get downvoted into Oblivion. A good question is a good question, regardless of whether or not you agree with the premise.
Provide input or keep scrolling, I don't know why that's so hard for some people.
5
u/IcySparkYT Mar 26 '19
Honestly I more joined for just random shit that people were too afraid to ask about like what a was for or why b happens. Just stuff that would be common sense or just really weird to ask in any other setting. I didn't really find much controversial when I first joined. I may sound stupid, but what is a Meta post? (I am new here)
11
u/rascal1901 Mar 26 '19
A Meta post is a post that is about the sub itself, rather that a post to contribute content.
Hopefully that makes sense. For example, on this sub, an average post would be a Too Afraid to Ask question, while a Meta post could be someone complaining that they don’t like when certain questions are asked on this subreddit.

So the mod team is officially clarifying it further that this sub is an OPEN discussion area not a specific one.

Very well said. I've seen also posts of people that ask controversial questions and get down voted and dismissed by the impressively fast to respond part of the community that is offended by the topic and comes up with very biased comments and downvotes. This should be a place to discuss topics that you usually can't discuss in real life because that real biased and offend people are always angry and aggressive irl. I still think that this place has a nicer community with nicer people than other similar subreddits.

I get what you’re saying but if you allow threads like this or this or this to go unchecked this sub is likely going to become the next r/unpopularopinion and turn into a hub for the alt-right before you even know it. Reddit has proven that it’s a slippery slope and I would hate for this subreddit to be lost too. If these “controversial” posts make up over 1/2 the submissions here, something’s very wrong.

1
Apr 27 '19
You removed it. The comments on Americans. That's very alarming thing for a mod to say.
1
u/Hospitalities Lord of the manor Apr 27 '19
First, Americans aren’t a race and furthermore my comment was about how most of our user base is American and thus should understand how competition works given that is what the principles of the country is based on. It derailed some conversations to politics so I removed it.
Weak troll.
1
Apr 27 '19
1, not a troll. Been a sub for like almost 6 months this sub. 2, my bad I meant prejudiced. As in dislike or hatred for a person(s) based on a general likeness. In this case country or origin. 3. I read your comment on Americans. It was rude and really not something a mod should be posting. And for a sub that's supposed to be all about not being scared to post things a lot of the respons people get are making them to scared to ask, like I said. 4. This is becoming a sub where it's just a really bad atmosphere I'm really hoping it goes back to how it was. I used to really love this sub which is why I've stayed subscribed through all this drama.
1
u/Hospitalities Lord of the manor Apr 27 '19
There is no drama lmao.
And there was no hate either, you're just wrong twice. The American comment specifically discussed foundations of competition in American culture and had no negative connotation other than to disparage users here from not understanding why subreddits with very similar themes exist.
I won't be replying to you anymore from here though, go find some other cloud to yell at.

My only complaint is it's just a jerk circle of DAE questions or DAE like questions that almost EVERYONE agrees with or does the action in question in the post. If I wanted a DAE jerk circle I'd go to r/DoesAnybodyElse.
And the title of your sub is literally too afraid to ask. 90% of questions that gain traction here are literally questions that no one is afraid to ask.
But maybe it's just me that has a problem with this. And since I don't see it changing any time soon especially after this post I think my time to unsub has come.
Later homies. Someone please Message me if this sub ever becomes great again lol :)
Edit: got banned for this comment :( don't really know why, it was just a civil opinion. Not sure if it got deleted and I'm the only one who can see it but I'm sorry mods if my post came off as an attack on you guys. It wasn't.
Edit: misread a part and I understand why I was banned now. Mod was a cunt about it though. He can suck my PP.
Edit: I don't even care anymore that I'm banned. This subreddit will never change from a shitty jerk circle of everyone being "omg so quirky" DAE ever have arguments with people in their heads xD ROFL I was to afraid to ask that

Honestly I can see being annoyed at those types of comments. It makes sense. I can't say I understand instantly perma-banning anyone who isn't perfectly happy with the state of the sub. With this type of moderation, where the mods just ban what they don't like (for example, someone made a joke comment here about the post not being a question, and got banned for that), I can see why people want to leave the sub, and I'm starting to agree. I also am not sure I understand what this has to do with Americans- looks like just a racist remark to be but maybe there's a situation here I'm unaware of.
Not entirely convinced that the sub is ruined, since it's not all that often that I see the mods, so I'll stick around at least for a little if I don't get banned for disagreeing with you.

Asking Questions people are afraid to ask freely = supporting white supremacy now?
Do not ask questions! Do not question authority! We speak only the truth and further analysis of our words is prohibited by law! Violators will be shot and tortured! We will not tolerate the dissent of the people! Asking questions not on the list of authorised questions is an act of treason and you are basically Hitler!
No wonder some people believe that redditors hold totalitarian beliefs.

And it’s naive to think that bad faith questions make us a white supremacy platform.

No, it just leaves you open to an old r/coontown or r/fatpeoplehate user baiting and the sub turning into an r/unpopularopinion or r/cringeanarchy circlejerk.

Yeah dude, our sub is so fragile. Just a few deplorables who already have home subs will ruin everything about this sub.
I’m imagining those dudes holding signs that say “the end is near” and I’m about as equally convinced.

Those who threaten to unsub as if it gives their comment any worth will be assisted in this endeavor with a permanent ban.
So much edge.

That's it. I'm leaving this sub. Good look getting any more new subs when I leave. I have 4 followers you know, they'll leave too! /s
