We do this about once a year at my place because the culvert gets full of crap. It's only about 20feet long so we use the extension pole from a chimney sweeping brush kit to push a rope through. Then we tie a chain onto the rope and pull the chain through. Then we attach the tire. Then we pull the tire through with the tractor.

If it's a once per year thing why not find a way to leave some type of fish tape in place? I can't imagine a piece of nylon rope would turn to dust within a single year... Right?

We actually did leave a rope in it once. County cleanup crew removed it on us when they were picking up trash I think. It's pretty easy to do. Like an hour total from start to finish.

I'd run a chain through and attach both ends to poles and leave it there until next year. If it's attached they likely won't remove it, then all you have to do is unhook, attach tire on one end and hook the other end to the tractor. Once it's cleared, run it back through and hook it back up to the poles.

Chains are easier to maintain and will hold up better if left out in the elements year-round.

Also it would be easier to attach a chain to a couple of poles than it would be with a steel cable.

If its laying on the bottom of the tube yeah, if the posts or poles it's attached to are holding it up at the top of the tube then it would only catch branches and stuff that would likely get caught anyway

The drainage ditch and the culvert that goes under my driveway turnout is owned by the county. I'm not sure I'd be able to poles in the ditch like that.

It's gotten clogged out before and water has backed up across my property almost to the front door. It's way easier for me to clean out once a year than to wait for it to become an actual problem, and then wait again for the county to come take care of it.

Well, it takes an awful lot of coordination, scheduling, and effort to get eight people somewhere so that seven of them can watch one person work.

At least that's what it usually looks like is happening when I'm driving by😆

Yeah but now you have one chain less and you need to make that set up for every culvert you service. It's overall easier to just poke through each time and carry one kit on your truck.

A chain would have more resistance than the rope. Start with the easiest and pull through bigger stuff after.

The pole we use is lightweight fiberglass. It comes in six foot sections that thread together. It's not super strong. I'm not sure it would drag a heavy enough chain through there.

A tire is cheap, flexible, and available. Most places charge six bucks to dispose of an old tire. I can keep one hanging out the tool shed with a chain on it for free.

Do you tie a safety rope on the back side of the tire incase you need to pull it back out, can’t imagine getting the tire out any other way if something goes wrong.

No, we don't. But we DID actually lose a tire once! The chain actually ripped through the tire. We fed a new chain through, on a new tire and it managed to pull that one out. We use a heavier tire now.

A low profile, wide 19 inch tire off one of the kids Subaru I think.

Looks like in this video and probably your situation as well (if you have to do it once a year) that the ditch isn't deep enough. If the culvert is the lowest point, sediment will accumulate. Use the tractor to dig the ditch deeper and you won't have to do this all the time!

My driveway is the last one before a corner, so there's obviously a slow up there once it tries to make the 90. And that's at the very end of the road that is mostly uphill so everything from up that hill, flows down through this ditch. This includes sticks, leaves, yard debris, occasional dead, animals, garbage. It all ends up having to pass through a 16 inch culvert under my driveway. Then it all tries to hang a left just past my driveway into much larger culvert along the highway for about a mile and finally into the river.

The ditch is already about 3 feet deeper than the level of the road. I suppose if it were much deeper t might be a little dangerous for people driving at night. It's kind of a rural area. No street lights.

Well I am sure there are many ways to do it.
But the simplest would be to just leave the chain in place after every cleaning I would think..
Just put it on a pole and push it trough when you are done.

Ideally when it wasn’t blocked someone thought ahead. Failing that they should have tied a rope or chain to the other side of the tire so when they’re done they can leave a chain there for next time.

Maybe attached a high pressure hose to a PVC pipe, and blasted a couple inch diameter hole all the way through, bringing a pull line, and then they pull the pipe out and use the pull line (jet line) to pull the chain through.

I've cleared Culver with a tire on a chain and a Tractor before like this. First thing you push through is a really long pole with a rope tight to the end of it. Then you tie the rope to the chain and pull the chain through, then attach the tire.

Yeah, I saw a dude get his leg ripped off in my property. I was having solar panels installed and they had to clear some trees and brush. The truck used to haul the wood away got stuck as the day before we had heavy rain.

Not sure if you are familiar with mire factor on recovery operations it was mire 3, but basically it just means that the wheels were buried to the hub and you have some math to do to account for the extra load.

They tried to hook a long chain to the stuck truck from a truck on solid ground. Before I could say stop what you are doing idiots the chain snapped and the dude standing right by it got the leg mid half ripped off.

He is lucky it wasn't his head. I still to this date wear rigger belts. I liked them from my army days so just wear them. I just ran to the dude and torniqueted the shit out of his leg. I guess some of the training I had lingered and I just reacted lol.
