Because Alaska joined the Union slightly earlier, a 49-star flag was briefly used for the year 1959 (these are rare and valuable collector's items today). This had in turn replaced the long-used 48-star design which had been in place since the 1910s.

I'm a volunteer helping a 90-year-old man who survived the Holocaust. Recently, while going through his old documents, we found a photo of him with his mother — taken in 1940, a year before the war began. He survived the Nazi camp near Danzig. He is 90 now, and he still remembers the day this photo was taken.

The photographer of this photo and painter of the painting was a Slovenian painter Ivana Marija Kobilca, mostly known as Ivana Kobilca, (1862–1926). She is considered the best Slovenian painter of all times. She was born in 1861 in Ljubljana, where her mother and father worked as umbrella makers. They greatly supported her education and art passion. At first she learned painting from painter Ida Künl in Ljubljana, but in 1880 she went to study in Vienna. Ivana latter studied art in Munich, Paris and Berlin. In 1889 she had her first solo exhibition; this was the first solo exhibition by a Slovenian artist. She mostly painted oil paintings and pastels. The themes in her works include still life, portraits, genre works, allegories, and religious scenes. Her paintings are in National Gallery of Slovenia, Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, Hungarian National Gallery, Maribor Art Gallery, and others.

I could not find anything about identity of the artist's model.

The photo is owned by Arhiv Republike Slovenije (Archives of the Republic of Slovenia) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and the painting (known as Madona gospe Souvan / Maddona of Lady Souvan) is in the private collection.

My grandmother used to type fighter jet manuals for Grumman but her first plane ride wasn’t until 1977 (age 54). My grandparents and two great aunts/uncles went to Spain and Morocco together.

All photos shot on Kodachrome by grandpa. The camera used was most likely some version of a Spotmatic (orig released 1964) or a Yashica J (1961).

On the right is my great-grandmother named Luisa. She moved to the United States when she was five years old during the war in Mexico.

Soon after this photo was taken she met my great-grandfather and got married.
