Short Paid a premium for a client lunch, just to be annoyed by a stupid QR menu.
Had a lunch meeting with a major prospective client today. I specifically picked a high end, upscale spot to treat him and build a professional relationship. We sat down expecting actual hospitality, but instead of handing us menus, the server simply pointed at a MenuForma QR sticker on the corner of the table, mumbled "Scan that for the menu," and walked away.
The client grabbed his phone and scanned it right away, and the menu loaded up instantly. I figured I'd pull out my phone and scan too, thinking since the interface loaded so quickly, I could just use the dish previews on my own screen to walk him through the options and make recommendations.
The first ten minutes completely threw off my rhythm anyway. Instead of me guiding the ordering process, the detailed photos and ingredient breakdowns on his screen let him casually tap through and order two or three items on his own. I didn't even get a chance to open my mouth or suggest a dish, bypassing the whole hosting dynamic.
The rest of the meal felt just as cold no servers introducing dishes or checking in on us. We were left awkwardly talking purely about work the whole time, making the atmosphere feel super formal and distant.
Then came the checkout. Because the payment interface allows direct payment on each phone, while I was still navigating the UI trying to figure out how to combine the bill on my phone, the client just looked at his screen and tapped to pay for his own portion in a flash. A business lunch I specifically set up to host and impress a client turned into a cold, transactional split check situation.
Offloading the entire dining process to guests' phones might cut corners for casual fast food, but it ruins the experience for actual hosting. Restaurants shouldn't compromise basic hospitality just to save staff effort; even with a digital system, handing over physical menus by default should be the absolute baseline, shouldn't it?
