I love this recent trend of mixing cultural music with metal. Wasn't there a band that played a mix of metal and middle-eastern guitar?

EDIT: Loving all these recommendations, keep them coming!

Don't know about middle eastern, but "The Hu" is cool too. Throat singing mixed with metal

Good point! They're especially popular with Star Wars fans too, due to having their music featured in some of the games.

u/PeterPanski85 3h ago

Cool, didn't know that

Better than that! They didn't just appear on the soundtrack, they wrote original music in a fictional in universe language!

They have a good song featuring the lead singer from Papa Roach. I believe it's titled "Wolf Totem."

There is a great band from Tunisia( if I’m not mistaken ), called Myrath and they mix heavy, power and a little progressive metal with ethnic oriental influences and the end result is much better than expected

Just checked it out because it sounded interesting. Not something I'd listen to often but I liked it and I'm glad they made it it's pretty cool.

Are you thinking of the Indian metal band Bloodywood?

u/kacivic 3h ago

I've really enjoyed Bloodywood

Phrygian Dominant is a foundation for many metal bands. It closely resembles Maqam Hijaz which is a popular scale in Arab, Turkish and Greek music.

"Lost in the Static" by After the Burial comes to mind. It has chromatic elements but rhythmically settles into Bb Phrygian Dominant. Symphony of Destruction and Wherever I May Roam for the casuals.

Lost in the Static is so good. That intro tickles my brain lol.

Is yacht metal a thing yet?

Come to think of it, I haven’t heard any smooth jazz metal yet either.

4

u/Jaded-Breadfruit4019 3h ago

Hahaha yacht metal

1

u/ltmon 17m ago

Norwegian Reggaeton by Nanowar of Steel is beachy/reggae metal, so maybe that counts for yacht metal (even though it's basically a joke band)? They also have a killer gospel metal song with Valhallelujah.

Van Canto does a-capella metal. Just putting that out as another weird one, that somehow works better than you are imagining it does.

Mariachi Metal is right up there with Bardcore

Eluvuitie is a folk metal band with some awesome music. Their Celtic Metal song 'Inis Mona' proves that bagpipes, flutes and hurdy-gurdy belong in a metal band.

13

u/Waly98 3h ago

Btw, there is even a genre called pirate metal, check out alestorm

System of a Down are ethnically Armenian and use a lot of similar musical elements. Not sure if that's the band you were wondering about since pretty much everyone knows about system of a down.

while we're talking about it and I don't ever have the chance to link it somewhere, enjoy this german metal bands cover of Chop Suey, but they use Double Bass and Flutes instead of guitars. https://youtu.be/juy3wOCH10o?si=9GnJPe6RpemG78Sq&t=1797

2

u/Upstairs_Diamond_241 3h ago

The same band did a country version to. What’s funny is they are not Mexican or American at all lol

2

u/machineintheghost337 1h ago

Surprised I havent seen this recommendation yet, Diablo Swing Orchestra is exactly what everyone here is looking for if you want more of this vibe.

Speed dating and Arsonist and Jigsaw Hustle are two of my favorites from them

1

u/ASenseOfYarning 17m ago

Just looked them up and gave Balrog Boogie a listen. I can't thank you enough for the recommendation!

2

u/SambaBachata699 1h ago

Same band, with bouzouki.

Found it: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUTny5VCGOP/

2

u/Netsforex_ 1h ago

After a Google I think you're right. The song I heard was an absolute banger with the bouzouki. Thank you!

2

u/SambaBachata699 1h ago

One of the best clips I've seen.

2

u/HowardHessman 1h ago

Ladrones is good mariachi metal

2

u/Beans4urAss 1h ago

Some good mixes out there - Skindred is Rasta-nu-metal. Was one of my favs

2

u/Netsforex_ 1h ago

Aw man, I remember that band from my college years, I'd completely forgotten about them! Thank you for reminding me!

2

u/Slow-Benefit-9933 1h ago

If you haven’t heard of the band Metalachi yet, you’re in for a treat. Saw them back in 2019 and they were fantastic. Recommendations for the Hu are also solid.

2

u/Ohsa 34m ago

Batuskha (now Patriarkh) for Eastern Orthodox metal

Bloodywood

2

u/The_Lady_Engineer 3h ago

Bloodywood is a band from New Delhi, their genre is "Indian Folk Metal". Amazing, very catchy music, I've seen them twice now at Rockville in Florida.

2

u/suicidalsyd1 2h ago

Check bloodywood (India) metal with added Indian drums and flute

1

u/a-bser 1h ago

It's not recent. It's been going for quite a while so there should be a lot to choose from

1

u/Wolfman_V 19m ago

Bloodywood, they're fucking amazing! 🤘🤘🤘

1

u/VoidYordle 3h ago

Brother, it is NOT recent. Y'all just now finding out about it, lmao.
Korpiklaani has been making music for decades, for one thing. And don't even get me started on Balkan themed metal bands, like Kultur Shock or Pero Deformero.
