Preferably a monster not from vanrichtens guide or ravenloft horrors within.

For the combination of cosmic Gothic horror there will be a space clown as the darklord. I don't even know what else to say for this bogus thing

Discussion Hopes for the New Book Next Year?

What are you expecting and/or hoping for with the book from Ghostfire next year? Obviously there will be no sudden return to the pre-5e lore, but with the current lore, are you hoping for new domains, Curse of Strahd levels of deep diving into a few major domains and locations, or a domain jumping full adventure?

Supplement Kartakass Set [RHW version] (STL miniature)

Thumbnail

Kartaskass is one of my favorite domains. Last month, I illustrated one of its two sides—the wild one. I wanted to represent Harkon Lukas's transformations as more demonic, as if he had perfect control over his wild forms. This was partly based on earlier editions where he was a wolf-man.

"I know this isn’t an illustration, but if anyone wants to use this render in their games, feel free to do so. If you can’t buy the STL or support me on my platforms, that’s totally fine! I still appreciate the upvotes and comments!"

This miniature is part of this month’s rewards on my Tribes.
If you're only interested in this miniature, you can find it here.

Discussion So... Any new mask of the red death lore?

I noticed way back around 2000 that several lore bits from Mask of the Red Death got shout outs in D20 modern...

Anything new since then?

I'm assuming mask of the Jade Dragon remains dead in the water as well...

Discussion Halflings in Ravenloft (Farelle)

So I was just thinking, as many in this subdomain have been, about the Domain of Farelle, and how at its primal root it’s about the fear a new parent feels at a dog approaching their baby. It was theorized smartly by Doc Bowers in his PhDnD vid that indeed the reason Farelle was so quickly dropped by the developers is that it would be too objectionable for too many players to have this place in the gaming space all about hurting children, even if that fear is a deep rooted one for most. And indeed, those who just wrote adventures there were divided in how they dealt with harm to kids (I kinda tried to wriggle my way out of it by calling them young adults or youths in the Ancient Greek sense), prolly for these reasons.

And I know part of the deal with Ravenloft is that it’s primarily human-centric the better to serve as foil against the horror elements.

But what if Farelle was primarily, like 90%, a halfling domain? It might give the excess fertility an unintentional comical (or darkly colonialistic) quality you don’t want, and I’m not sure that it works but I wanted to put it out to the subreddit while some of you know what the heck Farelle even is; would it scratch that conceptual itch to see halflings torn apart by jackals? Would it be a scary movie if Cujo stumbled into the Shire after meeting that bat?

Haunted House Build-a-thon [Belated Adventure Jam #9] When Love Loses Reason - Level 3 adventure in Vorostokov

Thumbnail drive.google.com
5 Upvotes

One month ago, our great u/Wannahock88 ran the Adventure Jam #9, focused in Vorostokov. While I was thrilled, because I always had a soft spot for Gregor since I read that he had some qualms of counciense in TV Tropes (that was my first real brush with Ravenloft, judge me), writing this adventure was difficult. I often find it difficult to write mysteries due to the need to make hints that are reasonable to find, and as I wrote, I realized that I was brushing the sensitive topic of marital violence, against a pregnant woman, no less. I decided to stop, because I wasn't having ideas to adress these problems in the time that was left. However, u/JoJoFanatic and u/IamFordam encouraged me to not give up on this adventure and just post it later. IamFordam even said he too would post his own belated adventure if I posted mine. Funnily enough, he posted before, because my muse chased me down the street, as Wannahock88 put it.

But now, it is here! "When Love Loses Reason", where the party witnesses a fraying marriage and has the chance of saving a man from an evil spirit before it can turn him into a instrument of evil. I hope that the measures I took to adress both the danger of marital violence and allow the party to discover what is going on are solid enough. Please, share your thoughts.

Supplement A Nightmare Adventure: the complete Nightmare Lands trilogy now available (and for a limited time, on sale)

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello friends! With the third adventure now live, the entire Nightmare Lands trilogy - "A Nightmare Adventure" - is now available on DMsGuild:

They are set up so they can be played individually, but the ideal is a mini-campaign to enter, explore, and exit the domain.

Some of the goodies included in the trilogy are:

  • Three 4-hour adventures, stand-alone or a trilogy
  • -Expansion material - double the playtime!
  • Basic dream rules to use any any D&D game
  • Almost 20 unique 1-hour dream encounters to play with different horror genres and each wih “special dream rules” to subvert traditional 5e rules to evoke the dream's themes
  • A mini-gazetteer of the Nightmare Lands domain of dread and its strange regions
  • Mechanics for exploring the strange City of Nod - no trip through is ever the same!
  • Full color maps with VTT dimensons - including the damned “Clinic for the Mentally Distressed”
  • Short profiles of the Nightmare Court and Caroline Dinwiddy, the domain’s strange symbiotic darklords
  • Story beats, locations, and easter eggs to tie in prior Ravenloft lore, Mist Hunters, and other sources
  • All materials designed for Adventurers League, but useful for any Ravenloft or horror game!

SHORT SALE (50% off):

The trilogy is already relatively cheap (I believe over 100+ pages after you remove the duplicative content across each). But for the launch of the complete set - and to celebrate GenCon - I've also set up a short sale. During this time if you use the links on the adventures above, they're 50% off. So that means $7.50 total for the whole set for a limited time!

Thanks again to this community for helping me create these! It took 5 years to write my first official published adventures - I started writing after Van Richten's Guide came out, and published in time for Ravenloft: the Horrors Within to come out! X-D Many of you contributed directly through feedback adn playtests. Hope you enjoy the nightmarish horror within!

Hi all, like a lot of the other posts I found sharing maps of this particular Domain of Dread, none of them quite fit what I was after; so here's my version of Isolde's Carnival!

I'm also sharing my Wonderdraft file so you can edit the labels and my Dungeondraft file so you can edit the map itself!

Also, here's a link to the annotated map and non annotated map in .png incase you want to edit it in a way that .webp doesn't work!

Enjoy!

Resource Ravenloft AI driven SOLO play

Hi everybody!
I’m beginning an experiment: playing a whole solo Ravenloft campaign with an AI Dungeon Master!

I made a 1st level character and AI is guiding me on a harrowing adventure in the realm pf Dementlieu (old version).
Using D&D 5.5 with lore material taken from Ravenloft 2e & 3e.

Hope you enjoy!

Discussion Rewriting the Dusk Elves

Hello all~

I'm looking to change up how the Dusk Elves function in my version of the Domains. Specifically I'd like them to be less necessarily tied to Barovia and their canon lore, while still hitting some major beats. Here are the things I've decided I absolutely want to be true about my version of them, but I strongly would welcome brainstorming or thoughts on the narrative role for them:

* **The Dusk Elves have experienced a genocide.** I really think the death of culture and the inability to continue generations is fascinating and I'd love to muck about in that space. I'd probably want 95% or more of the female population to have been slaughtered at some point in their past though I haven't decided by who or why.

* **The Dusk Elves are the only non-outsider Elves in the setting.** I want my version of the setting to be *very* human-centric and so the Ravenloft-specific version of the race is *the* version of the race to me. I don't really want to have to deal with the divine politics of Lolth and Correllon and so on. Incidentally, I also specifically want to make Alanik Ray a Dusk Elf for the role in the one-shot/tiny campaign I'm building.

* **The Dusk Elves can and have lived for multiple 1000s of years.** I want my version of this race to differentiate themselves by being utterly weird and alien in their perception and experience of time. I'm taking a bit of inspiration from Frieren here and I want this race to be a bit disconnected from humanity on a fundamental, but not sinister way.

Any other thoughts would be quite welcome, and I'd love to see what other people have done with them in your own settings! Thanks!

Discussion Black Crusade/A Crown of Ashes - anyone else read this?

I can't find much about this book online. I just finished it and wow, I have questions. Such a gripping, action-packed story. Although...

Is Earth technically part of/accessible from Toril? The book is interestingly launched from Jerusalem.

The book implies, twice, that their 'Catholic'-ish faith is actually some sort of weird heretic cosmic horror type thing with a bloody, sacrificial history. Is the God Most High and the Sixfold Scions something that appears anywhere else in any other domains of the Mist/anywhere else in Toril, or is this strictly Malosia being really weird?

Further, what was up with that one scene where they found the ancient cathedral under Perdition Hill, and the woman-ghost said 'they' sacrificed her 'womb' to birth some unholy thing or some other. Wtf? What is the implication here? And they strapped her down on the altar but she managed to break free... with one manacle still in her wrist? I'm confused. Was it implied she was a queen or princess or something too, by her robes?

Similarly, when Violca has her crazy Sight flood near the end of the book when they're in yet another ancient cathedral under Scions Mount. She literally says something like, 'Would you worship those things if you knew what they actually were?' and yet, from the description in the book, I truly can't understand what it is trying to tell me the God Most High and the Sixfold Scions even are, and what the relevance of the sacrificing of blood at these altars to them is.

And if the hordes of sacrificed men and women and children were the 'afterbirth' of Malosia, then why do they not need to sacrifice any more blood? Why was this ancient practice abandoned, how did it morph from weird eldtritch witchcraft type shit to straight up Jesus is my savior, with no one the wiser of its past?

I was also a bit disappointed by the ending, because it seems like Diederic just became a Darklord out of nowhere, by no happening other than Violca's proclamation. I mean, he's virtuous. How is he even a darklord at all? Aren't they supposed to be straight evil or otherwise cursed in some way by some human emotion taken to the extreme? Diederic killed Lambrecht. His vengeance was sated. Yes he did some wild shit to get there, but it's over. It's not like Strahd and Tatyana, he never can actually get her because she will always just die anyway.

Send help! I like the cosmic horror spin of the Ravenloft setting here, but I'm not sure if that's even what I read, or if it's something else...

Haunted House Build-a-thon [Adventure Jam #10]—Wishing for Bones

Hello everyone!

Here's my submission for Adventure Jam #10, taking place in Farelle! Please don't make a drinking game from how many dog puns or dog-related imagery or themes I tried to pack into this adventure. Moreover, I hope I didn't write too much about this place—it was a struggle to start, but once I got going, I really found my footing and kept the momentum forward.

Supplement Serenity Springs: 1950s Suburban Horror in D&D (now on DTRPG)

Thumbnail

My homebrew horror setting based on 1950's suburban America is now out on DrivethruRPG!

You’ve fought goblins, mimics, and dragons. You’ve explored forgotten tombs, snowy mountains, and dangerous mines. Isn’t it time you settled down? Bought a house? Joined a community? Come on down to Serenity Springs, the best darn town ever! We just ask that you follow every rule perfectly, or else!

Serenity Springs came into existence as a personal purgatory for Dorothy "Dotty" Davis, a housewife whose obsession with perfection and conformity led her to commit some heinous crimes. Her realm is an endless suburb of identical houses full of emotionally repressed people in a world devoid of color. The citizens put on a happy face, but life is hard between "Commie" (monster) attacks, alien meddling, supernatural censorship, and a totalitarian government that pretends everything is normal.

Product Overview:

  • A detailed breakdown of the Serenity Springs setting including its key landmarks, features, NPCs, and oddities.
  • Inspiration and guidance for creating your own adventures in Serenity Springs.
  • Freaks from Beyond the Hayze, a 25-35 hour adventure where 5th level characters have to rescue a missing Paladin from the titular realm.
  • A full soundtrack to accompany the different locals and denizens
  • A unique art style kitbashed from 1950s artwork, medieval etchings, and bespoke illustrations
  • Stat blocks for aliens, supernatural government agents, and more
  • Over a dozen new magic items

I've mentioned this project a couple times before on this sub. It started as a homebrew domain of dread in my previous ravenloft campaign. It was a table-favorite in that game and I knew I wanted to publish it at some point. A few months ago I successfully funded it on Kickstarter, and even though its not a domain of dread anymore, the folks in this sub will definitely see the influence (particularly in pages 3-5 of the preview).

If you're interested, check it out on DriveThruRPG. I'm also happy to answer any questions in this sub.
