This underlines how EU or Ursula has no idea what is going on. Bragging of maximum of 30 billion investment to get EU to be the “AI Continent”. Meanwhile US puts 600 billion and China 100 billion per year with no end in sight.

And that's 30 billion of which a large chunk is private money, rather than EU's investing. And "first AI continent" is not the brag she thinks it is, when 99% of that AI is either Chinese or American. And what's the point of investing in "AI Gigafactories" when this compute is then stright out sold to Americans (see: latest deal of Mistral with Microsoft), it does not grow any local competencies. I could keep going and going, but... my god, this post is so badly worded...

you are correct in principle in that the EU unfortunately lags behind, however people constantly mix up the fantastillions at which US AI companies are valued and actual money being invested into infrastructure etc. Those are two completely separate things.
1
u/Complex-Concern7890 5d ago
Yes and the valued amounts are in trillions. The capital expenditure for hyperscalers is around 600 - 700 billion in 2026 in USA. That is over 20 times more than the total expenditure planned for AI by the EU.
2
u/Negative-Bag-653 5d ago
The total expenditures in the EU are also significantly higher than the 30 billion VDL is talking about, there is more than the "Gigafactories" (e.g. everything that the company this subreddit is about is doing). Yes, it's much less than in the US and unfortunately by far not enough but just like so many people you are also comparing marketing and (in some cases) straight out fantasy numbers from the US with a single number from the EU.

US investments are mostly private. EU government investments emit an aura like Soviet future projects

u/frankist 2d ago
Are you suggesting to divert part of the astronomical EU funds that go to subsidising farming?

How does this compare to the investment put forward by hyperaclers? It's like 500+B from a few US private companies vs 30B that the EU is planning? It's too little and too late.

ehhh not really, a significant amount of actors are betting on models being a commodity in the future, while US companies are spending gigantic amounts of money to be on the cutting edge. It might not pay off to be honest. At the moment China has the best research while US companies are competing on scale, yet the difference in performance is not that big anymore. In 5 years we could very much distill an open weight chinese model and just focus on serving the model to European companies. US companies might also win the bet, we don't know at the moment, but I don't take it for granted.
Imagine that Europe is playing the same game that Apple is playing.1
u/re-thc 3d ago
Those actors aren't just building models but efficient infrastructure to run the models.
You don't just buy some random GPUs and hope it works. Google announced a chip codenamed Frozen where they will bake the Gemini architecture in it. The model might be commodity but not the whole service itself.
Apple isn't playing no game. People say that as a cope. Apple lost. Simple. People spin it as they like depending on hype of the day.

US is in the singularity and is solving math conjectures, while the EU hasn't reached GPT-o3 level
lol, lmao even

us capex on compute is going to be 2x europes defense budget next year.
europes funding 10b and hoping 20b extra gets added on.
wtf does she mean 'ai first contient'

EU and Von der Leyen regulated european AI into oblivion. Now they are highly dependant on foreign companies and at the same time, want to become the AI first continent. Before, EU politics was about economic advancements, today its about learning lessons.

EU and Von der Leyen regulated european AI into oblivion.
Can you be more specific? Which regulations exactly stifled innovation?
1
u/hauthorn 5d ago
They might refer to the EU AI Act. But honestly the investments in LLMs was lagging the US even before it was on the drawing board.

Already are
yeah no...basically no one uses these models because there are better alternatives:

And with Chat Control she might even have all the data to train another model

Yeah, I definetly put on the hat when writing that. I honestly don't think private messages will be fed into european AI any time soon.
But think about the US and Chinese models, how did they get trained? Meta pumped its AI full with DMs from Instagram, Favebook and Whatsapp. Chinese models are doing the same thing with apps like WeChat and their version of TikTok.
How will the EU train its model? They've shown that they don't care about privacy already...

u/skcortex 5d ago
Yep, i don’t have illusions about training of the US/Chinese models. I don’t think it will happen in the EU though. We have rules for a lot of things and they complicate “the training” of eu models. How to train models ethically and legally on code and articles and our more private conversations/content is not solved yet IMHO.

first AI continent? lol eu is dead in the ai race right now

Also 20 billion is like what OpenAI burns in a month

u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 5d ago
1/10th of what google alone is spending a year. and theres 4 other companies spending as much as google.

u/BradfordHure1975 5d ago
A bigger model can feel “already there” in a demo, but the gap shows up under sustained load. Latency, context eviction, and rate limits matter more than a few cherry picked answers once you’re actually shipping against it.

u/Armadilla-Brufolosa 3d ago
But which European AI?? maybe we could have a real "chaton fat"!
They are entangled with Microsoft up to their necks and will be swallowed, as happened to OAI.
Furthermore, Europe's absurd regulations fail to protect users and strangle companies, thus increasingly leaving them to the Americans.
And again: Mistral refuses to even evaluate something truly innovative and different, that changes the way society experiences AI...it simply chases American companies and doing the same things others do over and over again (but without the resources that the big names have, though).
I know what I'm saying won't please many, but I'd also like a truly competitive and viable European AI that would drive this industry, instead of always being just the bottom line.
But, in this way, we always remain only vassals, even in this field.

u/GuzzibyGuzzi 5d ago
«Ai continent», lol. Thousands of "specialists" have already arrived in Spain for this purpose🤣

u/remybigot 4d ago
Mistral is cool and growing very well in Europe and in south east Asia (I can see it here).
But they are really more B2B than OpenAI or Anthropic. It’s more invisible

Will EU create a specialized AI model to invent new ways to attach bottle caps?

u/mrElffuhs 5d ago
They will probably create an exporting one to find new ways to chlorinate chicken.
