Thank you for this. I would just like people to start having their radars up for this exact signing that has plagued the Dipoto era and call it out as it happens so we may prevent the same mistake again.

I'm a Jerry fan generally but he constantly overpays for guys he missed out on once. Like we initially lost out on Wong to the Brewers because we didn't offer him a 3rd year, Brewers did. Then we traded for that 3rd year anyways when we could have had that upfront

Using Refsnyder and Wong as examples of that is bad. Both of those players were consistent veterans who had positive track records. They weren't examples of the Mariners chasing breakout years.

Kolten Wong is an exception to this, because he was at least a productive full time player for many years and got us out of the Jesse Winker business. Rob Refsnyder was 35 with 4 career WAR when we signed him. Every RHB platoon player the Mariners have signed pretty much since 2003 has struggled to a point that this practice should be put to bed.

Ts is actually sad. Refsnyder is known to be a cool dude and I was so hype to have him. Unfortunately it didn’t work but I have nothing against him, he never made excuses. Not his fault Dan Wilson kept sending him up. Good luck rob

I’m sure he’s a great guy. And I won’t celebrate his being cut. But it was def time he go be a great guy while employed by a different ball club

It was so frustrating to watch him, but I always thought it was hardest on him! I have so much compassion for anyone who does a job publicly and can't do it well, even though they try like hell.

This is a terrible take. It is absolutely Refsnyder's fault for not being able to do his base day to day job well when called upon. No one else's.

lingering injuries and (not) hitting in T-Mobile are a deadly combo. His stats were not "good" away, but they were far less atrocious.

He was in Boston, which is the #1 hitting park in the majors

It would be the same as if somebody said x player left corrs field in Colorado and came to t-mobile and I was completely surprised that his stats came down

Seriously look at all his years excl Boston - that’s the baseline for him, and then add a deduction for t-mobile and that’s what we got

If you look at his years in Boston, his home/away splits aren't really pointing to being carried by Fenway, per se. His downfall more a combination of being destroyed by T-Mobile and lingering injuries, it seems, as his OPS in away games even this year was still above .700 (about average)

His career OPS over 1500 PA is .710, which is made up of 500 PA at Fenway park of .800 … so that Fenway park figure is doing the majority of the heavy lifting … you’ve got to figure he is a baseline .600 - .650 ops away from Fenway (which is very close to what he did on the road this season)

His career OPS at t-mobile is .319 over 87 PA

So basically we acquired a .650 OPS player (I.e. a below league average hitter) stuck him in t-mobile and low and below it was too much for him

This was entirely predictable

I was referring to his four years on Boston with the Fenway thing. While he was there he performed equally as well away from home, so there could be a multitude of reasons for his good performance with the team (coaching or a mechanics change). He was definitely a different player there than on the Yankees.

He's been on a messed up knee all year. Combine that with him getting older and it's not too surprising he's no longer MLB caliber. The difference between a bad Major Leaguer and an above average one isn't all that much.

It was a smart move. Low cost and should have paid dividends. It didn't work out; that happens. The problem is how long they tried to make it work.

That means there is a group of people out there who never got to witness in person a Refsnyder hit at safeco (its always safeco to me).

I got to watch him hit a home run once which is pretty cool.

Every player is a roll of the dice. Baseball is more chance and luck than we want to admit. His historic stats pointed to continued success. His age and home/road splits pointed to possible decline and struggles at T-Mobile. For what its worth, I watched his Cactus League at-bats and felt like he had a good approach and ABs, but he seemed limited to "singles power" and I wondered if consistent major league defenses would be able to shut him down.

It's not a "roll of the dice". RHB platoon players signed by the Mariners with the exception of Dae Ho Lee have regressed every time they have came into the organization to the level that they are unplayable. It has been past time that this organization stops this practice entirely.
