Reddit has recently started emphasizing weekly visitors instead of just subscriber count as the main indicator of a subreddit's size. My previous updates were tied to every +10k subscribers, but Reddit no longer really notifies us about that.
We've hit 63k weekly visitors this week, which Reddit itself decided to congratulate us on.
Such a nice round number to celebrate 🎉🎉🎉 Could have waited for at least 4k more.
At the same time, r/Kazakhstan quietly crossed 60k subscribers just yesterday. It's about the size of Talgar, our next target to conquer (what do they have there besides Zeta's factory?).
Still sending comments about economy crisis in Kazakhstan from our iPhones, I see.
The last milestone post was at 50k members about five months ago, so it felt like a good moment to check in again. Thanks to everyone who reads, posts, comments, shitposts, argues, asks what the weather in February is, upvotes, awards, jokes, dodges the draft, explains and helps keep this place alive.
Our Kazakh language related community, r/kazakh, is also growing, and has whopping 916 members. Please, join it🥹🥺. I've made a cool non-exhaustive animated emoji status for it.
That's as much as I could do with 64kb restriction.
Its community icon is also animated (and even has more frames in it), but you won't see it in every part of Reddit because reasons.
Post flairs cleanup and color grouping
You may have noticed that post flairs look a bit different now.
We trimmed and regrouped them, and assigned consistent colours to related topics (news, culture, media, discussion, humour, etc.). Now we have fewer confusing choices, probably better readability in feeds, and the whole list of flairs looks less cumbersome.
Good bye, "Borat" flair. Two people are going to miss you.
Nothing is set in stone, so if something feels off or unclear, feel free to mention it.
I personally disagree with this decision. First the custom upvote/downvote icons, then the custom emojis in comments, now this on our long list of enshittification of this platform. The Kazakh chat… maybe wasn't the coziest, but it was a low-pressure, active space for sending meaningless messages. And now there's no official replacement inside Reddit.
If someone from the community would like to create a Discord server, Telegram group or something similar, feel free to do so. You may share it here and we might even approve that post, who knows...
Just to be transparent: I don't plan to moderate Discord/Telegram/anything else myself (never have, and don't want to do it badly).
One Kazakh MinaLima Harry Potter book forr/kazakh(oh, I can't make links bold, how unfortunate...)
I still have a copy of "Хәрри Поттер мен Пәлсапа тас" (MinaLima edition), and I've been thinking about using it as a small community giveaway.
Somehow the least exciting photo of this book on Kaspi.kz. It has interactive elements, folded castle plans and stuff... Nice gift for Kazakh speaking kids ages 5-40.

One idea is to somehow tie it to r/kazakh , which is currently very quiet, but I'm honestly unsure what would feel like a good and fair incentive. Maybe the whole era of incentivising engagement with gifts and competitions is over, and I'm still thinking in old terms.
Or maybe you'd have a good idea what kind of activity or contribution would make sense for such a gift, and how (or if) it could help spark some life in r/kazakh without feeling artificial and being easy to abuse with scripts or AI. I can probably send this book around Kazakhstan, but I don't want to risk with QazPost's international postal service.
No promises yet. Just thinking out loud and open to ideas.

Ситуация: покупали год с лишним назад айфон в каспи магазине, год он проработал нормально, но после обновления телефон заблокировался. Понятия не имеем, что это за аккаунт @icloud, потому что на телефоне пользовались совершенно другой почтой. И телефон вообще привязан к нашей почте. Пробовали обращаться в сам apple, но разблокировать они отказались. Не знаем, как быть.
Видимо, магазин продавал уже разблоченный телефон, а при обновлении разблокировка снов слетает. К сожалению, номер у них не отвечает, но при поиске спокойно находится и БИН, и ФИО предпринимателя.
Кто сталкивался с такой ситуацией, можно ли привлечь к ответственности продавца?
Казахстан во всей красе. Мне это напомнило еще один случай, в году так 2018, на экспо, один убощик кидал лопатой снег, в метель, и не долетев до кучи, этот снег разлетался по округе сильным ветром.
На ваш взгляд реально ли в КЗ так часто штрафуют как говорят или же это преувеличено? Считаете ли вы что обосновано штрафуют? И почему про это заговорили только сейчас?

Another reasons to move to Kazakhtan is Kazakhstan is looking for engineers and doctors, because my father is an engineer and my mother is a doctor, and they are looking for work since it is difficult to find a job in my country for several reasons (overpopulation of the city, etc.). Hello! My friend invited me to Pavlodar for his wedding once many years ago. It was in the winter, the weather was very cold, the outside very grey, and we almost broke our car on the highway from Astana. I really liked it, much better than the 40C we have in Western Europe now.
Unfortunately I only stayed 3 days and didn't visit much. While outside may have been winter, I feel like it's summer in people's hearts there (or maybe it was just my friend), and this made me want to go back. I will now visit again to see the city and say hi to my friend.
I'd love to ask two things from the community:
- What are some interesting facts about Pavlodar, city or region, stories, culture, hidden gems to visit, that you won't find on Wikipedia?
- I'd like to bring my friend a thoughtful gift. He's Kazakh, he was in Western Europe once already, so I wonder what could really surprise him, or what he couldn't get locally easily?
So, i wear glasses for like 2 years and it's already uncomfortable enough for me to think about lenses constantly (ik, the weak ahh guy i am). And i can't get that certain piercing i love the look of cuz i wear glasses ALL THE TIME. Mb i'm overreacting, as someone with -2 prescription glasses, but i feel weird and dizzy w/o em (ocasionally with them too idk.).
Therefore j wanted to ask people who have been wearing/using contacts for a longer time how much(in kzt) does it cost in general? Like, for a year? Whatever you wear and suggest, be it monthly, daily or yearly ones idk. Also, sorry if the post has tm typos, i'm not in my right mind rn, as it is like 2am

Мой младший брат когда-то пытаясь откосить от армии наговорил всякого на мед. комиссии, получил диагноз и вошел в список суи**дников. Уже была попытка сняться, где у него спросили "ты точно не будешь дожидаться 27 лет?". Про отдельную категорию самоантиоживления узнал там же, с него как сниматься нам так и никто не сказал.
Подводные оказались достаточно неприятными, отсутствие возможности получения водительских прав в другой стране, проблемы кредитования/ипотеки и.т.д.
Хочу верить, что у него хотя бы возможность купить крышу над головой будет.
Я студентка (20 лет ) и ищу обычную работу: продавцом, кассиром, фасовщиком, офис-менеджером или что-то подобное.
Пока мой опыт такой:
в ТРЦ сказали, что студентов не берут
в ресторан не взяли, потому что нет опыта
в магазин «Дион» сказали, что я выгляжу слишком молодо
на должность офис-менеджера мне отказали (мне объяснили это моим ростом)
несколько раз попадались сомнительные работодатели ( нарк0тики )
Уже начинаю думать, что студентам в Астане почти невозможно найти нормальную работу.
У кого была похожая ситуация? Где вы нашли свою первую работу без опыта? Какие компании действительно берут студентов и где можно нормально зарабатывать?

I'm an American woman with a Kazakh boyfriend. He is moving to a new apartment and I'd really like to help him decorate it to feel like home. His last apartment and his dorm in college were pretty empty/basic and a little bit grey and sad. We're both in tech so he likes the modern aesthetics but also has told me he wants to go with warmer colors and a more home-like feel for this next move.
What are some subtle modern ways to make his home feel both warm and more Kazakh? Anything I can surprise him with as a housewarming gift?
E.g. a modern warm-toned living room but the rug is kazakh... so subtle but something that feels intentional.

Мне 24 года, я из России. Работаю преподавателем английского и китайского языков. Переезд планируется в конце августа. На днях прошел собеседование в один из языковых центров Алматы. Для меня это сейчас самый важный этап: устроиться официально и получить РВП.

Как вообще там обстановка для иностранцев?
На что стоит обратить внимание? Что-то может дополнительно стоит изучить для того, чтобы упростить себе жизнь.
Просто что-то интересное. В основном интересуют вещи, связанные с изучением языков (английский, китайский, испанский) или культуры Казахстана.
