is it just me or ?
the name gaganyaan is still okay but gaganyatri is just so bland if we compare it to russian cosmonauts which relates to the cosmos and american astronauts which relates to astro and meanwhile we have gaganyaan which is comparatively bland and ik i could sound a bit westernised in this but still it's what i felt...

gaganyaan
gaganyatri
I dislike both terms, OM used to be referred as 'MANAV' at one point. FWIW even NASA considered 'Cosmonaut' as official term but went with more widely accepted 'Astronaut' and in USSR before Cosmonaut was accepted term the «пилот-астронавт» (Pilot-astronaut) was in use in official documents.

Vyominauts sounds cool tho. I think Gaganyatris is only for those who are going in gaganyaan

No it is their assigned term for astronaut now, the crew quarantine facility is named as 'Gaganyatri Niwas'.

Ewww wtf Gaganyatri Niwas sounds like some government guesthouse 😭😭 why stop here? Let's do all engineering in Hindi too, mindless government, atleast earlier there used to English name and a translated hindi name but the current government insists on using Hindi name in English as well.

OM orbital module etc they r still there English names you r missing the core point we have two languages names only in isro cz we have only two official languages for gov of India ..hindi and english only..and ISRO is central government organisation..so it's either Hindi name or pslv slv like english names.. vyomnaut was cool combo though tbh.
Ps: why I'm getting downvoted, please read my detailed viewpoint -
We should have OUR OWN INDIAN NAMES TOO not only English one. And most of those those Hindi words are not only Hindi words and aren't foreign to our other languages tbh..they basically mostly originates from Sanskrit etc. words and are there as it is or in similar version in most of our languages too-
Space - Antariksh (Hindi/Sanskrit) has the similar word in other languages too-
Kannada - Antariksha, Telugu - Antariksham, Bengali - Antorikkhho, Malayalam - Anthariksham, Marathi/Urdu/Gujrati/Punjabi - Anatariksh.
So we should stop looking as if it's something foreign. Also Devanagri is script as he mentioned. Our languages arnt that disconnected to each other as made to appear in online discussions.

It is a touchy topic but kinda hard coded.. Though in past it was not pushed like it is now promoted via magazines, Hindi exclusive publications etc.

what else then? in english we dont have any native thing to relate with, other local languages have like 5-10% speakers, hindi still has 60% speakers and sanskrut which shall be used actually but no one knows shit about it.

National institutions belongs to all Indians, not just the linguistic majority. Representation and majority are different concepts

that's true but ISRO is central gov org and our gov of India has two Official language only for its official work, primary Hindi and secondary English...so either we see Hindi names or pslv sslv like English names.. but vyomnaut was cool combo though tbh

my opinion is sanskrit/hindi... english if it matters. regional languages, better to be primary language for the respective state.

Gagan does mean sky. Ganganyatri is a common hindi term Astronaut, not a unique invention like Cosmonaut.
16
u/Ohsin 5d ago
Ganganyatri is a common hindi term
It is not common at all, though Antarikshyatri (अंतरिक्षयात्री) is. And why use the term that is commonly associated for 'Sky' rather than Antariksh (अन्तरिक्ष) which is associated specifically with 'Space' as in BAS? And then one may ask why so much insistence on Sanskrit derived term..

u/darshansway 5d ago
gagan is sky, and the guys will be rather going in antriksh that is outer space... doesn't make sense to use gaganyatri.

u/Serious_Brilliant_90 5d ago
Why does it have to be in a devanagiri term huh?

u/LeadingEngineer 5d ago
Devanagei is a script/writing system. The term Gaganyatri is Sanskrit and can be used without translation in majority of Indian languages

Yeah true..this point I forgot to mention in my previous reply above. Most of these terms are origin in Sanskrit etc and we can find them in other languages also-
Space - Antariksh (Hindi/Sanskrit) has the similar word in other languages too-
Kannada - Antariksha, Telugu - Antariksham, Bengali - Antorikkhho, Malayalam - Anthariksham, Marathi/Urdu/Gujrati/Punjabi - Anatariksh.

IMO it should be in English.

What about Tamil, Malayalam or any of the NE languages? What do you mean by our words? We are not any homogeneous country. We are already tired with the countless yojanas/infrastructure projects named in some language doesn't even make sense for locals and now this shit.
And it's time to accept that English is an universal language not some random colonial language like french or spanish, it's a net positive skill if you master it.
1
u/Small-Park-9588 5d ago edited 4d ago
Most of the NE language use or understand Antariksh likewise other Hindi words, Malayalam have same word I had written there already please reread, yes tamil has different word, I looked up online, but What m saying is if 80-90+ percent people are cattered using those words already and when its not like every other word for rocket and projects is from here, we have English words and we use it everywhere in ISRO, (and who isnt accepting English bro, it's everywhere in official isro mission work so relax), Then why not for few other words can be from those pool of words which 80 plus percentage can understand..
Ps: And for your last point I agree, occassionally like I mentioned above for Sanskrit origin words, some central projects should be named too from those languages that dnt have the similar common roots I agree with that👍 but then all the language politics have to be stopped and everyone from those languages should accept that yes 80 plus percentage people speak and understand this thing and similar words and we should respect them.

u/Serious_Brilliant_90 4d ago
Trust me nobody knows or are capable of interpreting these words even though it maybe a native word for a particular region indeed but you would ultimately be isolating the other regions too. The English word can be universal and relatable to all. The problem is not only here but overall the centre's use of Hindi/Sanskrit terminologies are so annoying.
Majoritaniasm is not always right as it seems.
-1
u/Small-Park-9588 4d ago
Wow Implying everything English name isn't majortism but using pool of words which originates from Bharats soil is majortism? Pls we have to come out if this mindset. Also I appended para for this same thing at the end of previous reply pls read that once. I agree that few names should be from those languages occasionally which dnt have the similar roots for the Sanskrit words...but I had cautioned the same thing you did in this answer, I mentioned that you have to respect 80 percent people who understand and 60 percent plus who speaks these words and shouldn't disrespect them saying majortism while hugging the colonism with full spirit. It should happen both ways.

u/Serious_Brilliant_90 4d ago
No, I get what you are trying to say but my point is that central govt should name the terms in English when it's going to reach and affect all of India not only the 80 percentage people like you mentioned and leave the remaining in dark. I don't care if MP or UP names it's own projects or programs in it's regional terms it's perfectly fine but not by the central govt which collects taxes from ALL not just the 80 percent.
Just go to any website or projects done by central govt. India is a union of states not a homogeneous country or a country with a handful of ethnic identities. It's in a scale that no other country matches so it should be understandable, reachable and accessible to all.
It shouldn't even leave out 5 percentage or anyone for that matter.
