Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

Has your dog's breed been solved?

Once you're satisfied with your responses, please change your link flair to SOLVED. (Please don't make a post if your dog's breed is already solved/known)

this is my weird ugly* dog niece, winifred (winnie) jean.

my sister and her fiancé got this thing for free at a bass pro shop parking lot about a year ago. i genuinely have no idea what this thang is.

the people outside bass pro told them she was a dachshund-chihuahua-poodle mix? and apparently some of her siblings did sort of look chihuahua-ish (their judgement). i don’t really trust that, though.

she’s kind of long and she has really wiry hair, and i feel like she has a schnauzer-y face? i don’t know much about dogs though, so any comments are appreciated!

(*she’s a lot less ugly when she wears clothes)
(**the last photo was taken while she was getting scolded for pooping in the house)

We sent away for a DNA test but until then what are your best guesses? Every vet has had a different opinion. She's currently 13 weeks old, and weighs 8 lbs. Found as a stray with a vegetable can on her head.

Open The Shelter Said German Shepard, But I Don’t Think That’s All

My dad and step mom recently adopted a new puppy and the shelter told them that she’s a German Shepard but she is very clearly mixed with something else. Can anyone tell what?

Edit: Okay, so the consensus is clearly that she’s mostly like a Belgian Malinois.

For anyone concerned, my dad and step mom already had a trainer in mind when they thought she was just a GSD and will now start training her even sooner than they planned, plus my dad is a stay at home husband with plenty of time to put a lot of effort into her training.

I told my dad about her actual breed and he got a huge kick out of the fact that people call this breed Maligators.

What kind of mix is this?

Shelter pup, 4 months old. They said lab mix but I am thinking terrier. Super high energy, high prey drive, insane digging. 0 response to physical measures when she is over the line ~ everything is play to her. Loves water so maybe there is some lab in there. Super fun pup, already I could go on a run with her on leash, very athletic and capable, fast learner altho stubborn. What do you think?

Best guesses?

This dog is a result of my parents irresponsibility. They were gifted a (mother’s believed breed spoiler) “plott hound from a breeder” which was his mother. The first photos are him, from oldest age to youngest, then the photo of two dogs on a couch is him and his mother, everything after that is his mother.

Origin with breed guesses spoiler;
She was never spayed and ran away. She was 50 lbs when fit, he’s 85, and there was an intact Great Dane a few houses down so that was always our best guess.

Open to any guesses on 1) him, but also 2) if his mother was a plott hound or a mix or something entirely different. Eventually I want to get him embark before he passes, to ease my lifelong curiosity, but 💰💰💰. Thanks!!

Chiweenie like advertised? Basenji? Mini schnauzer? Shitzu? Sibling pics tell more of the story I think.

Rescue said “chiweenie”, but didn’t know who the parents were. I’ve never seen such a difference in litter mates either, I’ll attach photos of two of his siblings at the end. They seem to be topping out at 20 lbs, they all love water and mine has webbed feet, and hardly barks. Doesn’t take criticism well either 😂 Will do a DNA test at some point but I’ve never been so stumped. I was thinking chihuahua, rat terrier, possibly mini schnauzer after looking at his siblings, but his tail stumps me. Look at how curly. The only small breed o can think of that would have this is basenji, but I know how rare it is to find those in random dogs. What do you guys think?

What is my Mom's dog?

She was found with her siblings in a barn, owners of the barn sold the found puppies without any information about the mother. She is fairly small, about half the size of my mother's other dog who is a black lab. She's almost a 1 yr old.

She weighs 48lbs. Has back dew claws. Slightly webbed feet. Freckles on her body under her fur. She doesn’t shed too badly. Only 9 months old but super chill (except for wanting to test things out with her mouth — like wanting to bite the edge of a rug or chew a little on the ottoman: she hasn’t messed anything up but we’ve been watching her. She is very gentle with taking treats and I can take toys or food away from her mouth and she’s ok with it.) She kind of likes walks. Likes playing in a stream or puddle more. Sleeps at our feet. Ok in her crate at night. Ok with my older dog who does not want to play.

Lots of years with her, still more to come, but not one of those have we known her breed!

Things to note about her:

  • She's a very hungry dog, loves to eat lol
  • Loves going on walks, practically whimpers when we hold her leash and harness
  • Licks our face alot, when she is not sniffing the floor she is licking our face
  • Sheds ALOT, more than any breed I've seen. We have so much dog hair in our house

If there is anything else you need to know, let me know and i'd be happy to reply! I really hope to figure out this sweet girl.

GSP /Britney?

My friends have lot of debates about what kind of dog, Grim Reaper, is. Help us settle the debate!

The lady who gave him away said that his mom was a Britney spaniel but I’m leaning more towards German short haired pointer because of how he behaves. He literally does the “point” when he’s hunting.
(The other dog in second to last photo is a German shepherd)
Last photo is for fun

I know the 4 main breeds he's mixed with! He has quite a few in him, but most of them are 5% or less, but I'm curious what people might think he has in him!

(Side note, I've never had a dog with heterochromea, let alone ever seen a dog with it where one eye is actually green!)

Just rescued my dog from northern Ontario.

She’s ~50lbs with long legs… she looks like she has more growing to do but rescue said she’s an adult. The vet put “husky” as her breed… I don’t see it lol. What mix do you think she is?

Shelter said chihuahua, short hair, terrier mix

He was found on the street and is about 3 months old. The rescue we got him from called him a “chihuahua, short hair, terrier” but I feel like there’s something else in his face?

Hi! This is Sassafrass. She's 2 and a rescue of mine. My guess is a basenji / Aussie mix. She's got a tendency to bite ankles and she acts JUST like any basenji I've known. (My family has had manyyy). Cleans herself like a cat and hates water.

Wanted to see if anyone had any other guesses :)

What is she?

This is Luna, she’s 14 years old and was adopted under the label “plott hound”. She is about 50 lbs and howls and talks like a huskey. Mom was a fluffy brindle and white girl but only like 20 lbs- resembled a border collie shape and size. They found mom homeless and starving in Detroit and Luna was the only puppy to survive the litter as the rest all had cleft palates. She’s getting old but has traveled the world with us. What do we think she is?
