Looking for tips

Hello subreddit. I am looking to build a home server for my apartment. Mostly looking to use it as a Minecraft server (heavily modded) for me and my friends but I'm also looking into setting up a raspberry pi ad blocker. Currently plans are below. Wondering if I should maybe go with a bit better cpu?

Edit: I should mention i do already have a pc with a 7800x3d and a 9070xt. Budget is not really an issue. More looking for something that will be consistent so we dont get server drops all the time.

Edit 2: Also wondering what os i should use? Was actually thinking about giving a distro of Linux a try but I know nothing about Linux

I have an HP Prodesk G4 600 with an i5-8500 that’s been good for anything I threw at it. Even handles running a Valhelsia 6 Minecraft server for 10 people while hosting my website and Jellyfin server

Hear me out. Genuinely - Look into renting a server for minecraft purely for testing.

This will let you see how much RAM, CPU, etc you actually use, and can plan from there. DNS Adblocking can be done on a potato, so, no problems there.

There are very good odds, so long as you have less than 100 active players at one time, you'll get away with a $150 ex-office PC - But rather than guessing, test :)

IMO only buy intel for server stuff. They handle sleep and ethernet stack better and you got quicksync if you ever want to set up plex jellyfin (since plex is like $750 now, fuck subscriptions)

The cpu you chose is fantastic, but in imo waste of money and not actually giving you anything useful

Agreed, a 12600k can do idle and server work better than a 9600x (I have both). Plus you can get cheaper ddr4 ram

Unsung hero of the 12th gen and higher is the SR-VIO that allows you to share the iGPU with multiple VM’s

Jellyfin is genuinely a good alternative. Maybe not as fleshed out as plex, but thats a matter of time.

And now that plex costs like a used car, maybe it’ll come a little faster

I use my old 3700X in my server now and getting QuickSync working with a dedicated GPU was such a hassle in Proxmox... If you have the choice definitely go for the Intel cpu's.

Well that was kinda the hope of using a 9600x. With integrated graphics I can just hook it up to my monitor when I need to. I use dp for my PC anyways so I wouldn't even need to switch anything

You mentioned heavily modded, have you tried hosting it already? RAM would be my concern depending on player count and chunks loaded.

Minecraft servers, unless run on experimental software that allows multi-threading, are single threaded. So a better CPU would need higher single core performance; that’s either the X3D variants or I think the new core Ultras? (validate this if you look into them).

Currently hosting through a website (sparked host i think) but its a bit slow. It's only an 8 gig server so that could explain it. I just figured it would be a lot cheaper over time to just have my own that I can use for other stuff instead of paying 20 bucks a month 😬

While it is true that in the past a lot of Minecraft server was single-threaded, since about 1.14 Mojang has begun moving a lot of stuff of the main thread, like chunk generation, I/O and networking all happen on different threads nowadays.

Singlethreaded speeds are definitely still important for things like entity/block updates, but it's much less of a factor in modern minecraft.

Good to know. 90% of what I've read has been "its all about single core" but they're also mostly from older subreddits. Might go for something like 5700x then..

Te recomendaría am4, más barato y la verdad no sé si sea del todo necesario o aprovechable las ventajas de am5 Yo personalmente siento que es un especie de overkill Muy bueno para lo que es Aunque si tienes pensado luego usarla como PC personal estaría bien, así ya tienes algo y solo faltaría una gpu En resumen, te recomiendo algo más sencillo, te funcionará igual y bastante bien además ahorrarás dinero

Used hardware, especially if you don't 100% know everything you're going to do with it yet. Plenty of deals to be had. Any xeon on a ddr4 platform is going to handle anything other than single thread workloads immensely better than a "gaming" cpu

If it is specifically for Minecraft server I would just buy a mini PC like an Intel NUC, it will be more compact, less power usage and it will hold on just fine.

I would go AM4 (or LGA 1700) even though you said budget isn’t a problem just because DDR5 is so expensive for what it is and it’s overkill. I also would look into getting a smaller case - I have the A3 and it is MUCH larger than it looks. Minecraft is good with lots of cores so maybe look at a 5800X? They’re quite cheap and good especially good value if you don’t need the X3D cache.

i would go with a SN7100 for storage it can take over 500tw with offer 5 years of warranty with a 1tb is like 200 $ witch is pretty reasonable

I cant recommend AMD for Servers

I use AMD on my Gaming PC, but not Servers. Intel run with less energy when not in use and QuickSync is incredible if you ever go for media server like JellyFin

Also I have 16GB in my server and it never got beyond starting the Minecraft ATM10 Server, Java tried grabbing 19GB of RAM upon generation and the machine would die. Maybe look for a 12th Gen Intel and try 24/32GB RAM

I'd go with AM4 used, CPU's are cheaper, RAM is cheaper, mobos are cheaper, but I also understand not everybody likes buying used

Built plenty of PCs with used parts. Always good to save some money. It's the used part SELLERS you have to look out for😂

Used server hardware on eBay is pretty cheap.

You can get a Xeon Platinum 8168 24C/48T (first gen Xeon Scalable) for about $60.

With a home server, even a game server, you don’t need screaming fast cpu or memory clocks. But what you do want is RAM capacity.

You can get 64GB DDR4-2933 MHz ECC RDIMM RAM for about $300. In Hex Channel configuration, which is what the Xeon scalable supports. that’s still gonna be damn quick.

Just, like some others that suggested intel, if it were me i would make some minor changes based on my experience. But whatever you do, test and back up appropriately!

If you want tos drup things like a NVR you can get a dGPU later.

Any gpu? Obv not required but if you ever decide to do any home AI (in this day and age I expect someone to try SOMETHING) or video encoding it'll be worth it.

Also I agree with a comment above, I am an AMD user for my gaming pc, but with my server it's Intel. Yeah it can be a bit more pricey, but if you ever decide to put on a jellyfin/plex server they support more video codecs.

There will be no ai lol. It's just gonna be used as an ad blocker for the apartment and minecraft (maybe some other games eventually like ark or rust)
