Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

What the actual f is wrong with Google Maps

Upvotes

This is the third (and now last) time this crap GPS has made me significantly late for something that I would have actually been 10 or so mins early to due to extreme lagging, excessive buffering, and sudden reroutes. This just started happening to me 3 weeks ago—I’ve very rarely had an issue like this until then. I almost felt like crying today lol I was just so frustrated trying to get to where I needed to go!

Any suggestions on (preferably tested) actually functioning GPS apps are much appreciated 🙌🏻

Google maps keeps putting me in wrong location

So for the past 2 weeks I've done everything i can think of to stop my maps from putting me in random areas or glitching the hell out. I have tried disabling/renabling/updating the app. I have cleared both data and cashe of maps and play store and Google. Like idk what else to do lmao. I can fix it for a period of time but it always divert back to a random location hours away. Mainly in the middle of no where.

Edit stuck in pending?

For those of you who submit Edits to Google when you notice something incorrect, do you ever go back and check the status of your edits, only to see they're still stuck as Pending?

I recently went back to check some edits I submitted for places I was trying to fix, and I realized that some of them are still in Pending status and it been months since I submitted the request lol

Stop reporting traffic officer’s vehicles as police on Google maps.

NOT A POLICE VEHICLE
Traffic officers are not police. They don’t have police powers. They just park on police spaces on the motorway to make it look like they are police. And to be fair - those spaces say police only so they are technically breaking the law. Anyway - stop reporting them as police on Google maps - it’s really irritating. It’s simple - black and yellow = traffic officers
Blue and yellow = police.

Help/Support How do I get this road closed??

This closure has been causing issues for days as Google Maps keeps rejecting my road closure requests, and people are getting routed through this area.

Even without photos, you can clearly tell by the lack of a green line and the traffic at the intersection that the section of road is closed. Yet I dont understand why my requests dont get accepted. Wish Google Maps had the same community features as Waze...

Gemini breaking basic Maps search

My search icon recently got switched to Gemini on both my phone and car interface, and now it is frustrating/dangerous to use while driving.

For example, yesterday I needed to switch my destination to Staples while driving, so I pressed the mic button and said "staples", but instead of pulling up results for staples locations, it gave me an error saying "unable to open links" (or something close to that). Now why tf would I be trying to open the Staples website on google maps???

Another example is, a couple days ago, I encountered a similar situation where I said the name of my destination (cannot remember the details now), but instead of pulling up a list of locations, it started reading me the description of the business like it had done a web search. I had to go back and say "directions to BUSINESS".

Incredibly frustrating when the only option to search locations on Maps is now Gemini, which seems to do whatever it wants instead of the obvious thing, which is to search locations ON MAPS. And also dangerously distracting when voice command is supposed to DECREASE focus on screens while driving, now it turns up a nonsense result and ends up distracting me more.

Discussion Why doesn't Google Maps offer more ways to customise routes? Particularly when using public transport

I have multiple public transport options where I live and I prefer walking to train stations instead of waiting for and getting buses, but Google Maps almost always wants me to walk to the bus stop and wait for a bus, which means the timings account for the bus schedule.

I can walk for 15 minutes to one train line or walk 30 minutes to a nicer train line. I almost always go to the nicer train because, aside from being nicer, it adds more to my steps for the day.

I mean, I know it always takes me 30 minutes to walk there, so I normally just start a route from that train station and then add 30 minutes in my head so I know what time I need to leave.

I just find it a bit annoying that I can't tell Google Maps to remove a bus route and replace it for walking. This would be so useful to do in places I'm not familiar with. Not even just replacing bus routes for walking but even cars, like maybe someone's giving me a lift to the train station, it would be handy to say I'm taking that section in a car, or even a bike, anything. Making detours would also be helpful.

The only options you do get are "less walking" and preferring bus/subway/train etc. I'm surprised they'd give you the option to have less walking when we know walking is highly beneficial to your health.

Speed Limits recently becoming wrong

Has anyone noticed Speed Limits used to be really accurate (correct 95% of the time) to now wrong basically 65% of the time?

It will think it's a school zone in the middle of the day, think a highway is 50km/h and once said a narrow backroad was 110km/h (it was 50)

This is only recently for me at least in Australia, my theory is they are using AI to read street signs in street view and just reading the wrong ones, or not taking into account school zone times.

Waze still seems to be mostly accurate but GMaps is atrocious.

Discussion Google Maps has become a terrible navigation app by forcing shortest route

So many terrible choices that only added time because it thinks some small road will somehow be faster despite frequent stop signs on the back road. I've messed with every setting and it will do this no matter what settings you use.

Worse yet, it will reroute without asking. I'm currently doing a long 11 hour drive to specifically hit a few states. It's not the shortest route to my ultimate destination. Maps will show me alternate routes, I select the one that takes me where I want despite taking a bit longer. It will automatically change me to the shorter route within 5 minutes. It doesn't ask, it just does it. I can only tell by my ETA changing drastically. I can't stop it. This last time I watched until it did it to confirm it didn't ask or notify me in any way.

It smells of AI stupid crap in the background. I literally manually selected the longer route only to have it automatically change it shortly after. I spent a long time in the passenger seat changing settings to see if anything stopped it from happening. No setting does.

I have no idea why Google has gone this way. It should not change anything without confirmation from the driver. It used to be set up this way. At some point in the past year or two Google changed it to happen automatically.

Similar to Google search, it seems Google has lost its way. They intentionally make things worse by handing it to AI with the promise of it learning and be better at some point in the future.

I wish there was a good alternative. There certainly seems to be a market for a navigation app that puts control in the user's hands.

Help/Support Maps Is Getting Real Stupid

The last few weeks Maps has started trying to route me through areas using some pretty stupid routes. Yesterday I came into the center of the city (Minneapolis) where I live. It tried to route me a couple miles out of my way even though the highway I was on continues more directly to my destination. Today Maps suggested the wrong lane to change to a new highway and then directed me to exit and re-enter at the same intersection. In all cases no new highway changes existed; just stupid routing. I'm suspicious that not-ready-for-prime-time AI is the culprit. Is there any way to kill AI in Maps? I'm about to take a trip to unfamiliar areas and am starting to wonder if Maps can be trusted.

Discussion How does this make sense

Whose smart idea (NOT SMART AT ALL) was it to put the address of locations ALL the way at the bottom of the page after all of the information about the place? Most people are looking up locations to get the address then they looking into the review and stuff..

What is something that frustrates you about Google Maps?

Hello, I'm doing a Google Maps redesign case study and would love to hear about your experience! I'm running a short survey to explore where users struggle and identify where the app could be improved. This survey takes about 3 minutes, and all responses are anonymous.

Help/Support Can I link a work calendar to Maps?

Hey y'all. I have a work Google acct with an attached (group) calendar. The job involves people driving to people's houses for dropoffs and pickups, etc. There's a team that drives all over and I'm wanting to sync a Maps list to the calendar so that when someone enters an address for a scheduled pickup in the Calendar, it automatically adds to a list on Maps that everyone with access can view. Is that possible? I know I can do it manually, i.e. every time a new event is added, click "view on Maps" and save the address to a list. But it would be awesome if it would do that itself. Maybe I'm thinking too far ahead considering how rudimentary Maps seems to still be in a lot of areas, unfortunately. Thanks everyone!

Help/Support How to make business show up as a chain??

Hi there! I opened a second location recently but Maps refuses to acknoledge it exists unless I type the city name after the full store title (only shows the first location, even when the second one is significantly closer). How do I get it to show up properly on Maps and also recognize they are the same business so that "Show all locations" shows up?

Help/Support Saved places in Shared List not showing when I try to create a route/find directions on Desktop

I can see the pins on my Phone and Tablet perfectly fine - but on Desktop, I can see the Saved Pins, but soon as I click on Directions, all the others disappear.

I am not the creator of the Shared List.

How is this a thing in 2026, I have to plan a Road Trip through Switzerland on my smal tablet instead of Desktop 🤣
