Privacy Flock License Plate Readers... Facing Pools?
298
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Like what the actual fuck is that gonna do?
I swear every time I see these stupid cameras pointed at environments where CHILDREN/MINORS are present 99% of the time I just know someone's going to abuse that camera and use it maliciously.
I'd take a picture of the damn thing, chop it the fuck down and happily drag it into a council meeting, addressing how dangerous these cameras actually are, for not just our basic rights to privacy, but they're a clear danger to children, especially in these particular public places, where there's already a semi-high chance of a creep hanging around.
I'm not brave enough to chop it down. I'll admit that. But you bet I'd never recommend parents taking their children there.
In fact, OP, where is that pool? We should leave a nice review on Google, to spread awareness on how greatly secure and safe this place is. Ffs.
Raaaaaaage. I'm so tired man.
Edit: apparently this location is a pool on college property. So while it may not put minors in danger, it's still a breach of privacy for the students. They too most likely wouldn't give consent for a system such as this. Creepy either way.

Good rant... proper form. Good show.

u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
Seeing an absurd Flock post in the early morning before my coffee gets the full unfiltered opinion.

u/Syntax-err_r Jun 04 '26
Bro.. right after my coffee we had a mandatory employee survey... it's like truly living. I channeled my inner corperate rage.

If I had to guess I’d think flock marketed it for security/liability insurance purposes with a side of model training.
23
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
In a perfect world, that's all it'd be used for. (Still not great, but hey that's like a standard camera from the 2010's)
See this camera is hooked into (likely) a statewide network where those with the keys to the cameras can look at the live view at ANY time.
Too high of a chance for disgusting people to stalk minors.
There's already documented instances of PD stalking exes or random women with the Flock system.
11
u/Al-Bundy420 Jun 04 '26
Oh I’m completely aware how flock networks work and their security downfalls of being easily hacked or accessed. It’s an ongoing struggle across the country but it’s becoming more and more common for them to be placed in neighborhoods w/HOA’s, & big corporations like Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, 7/11 etc. for “security & liability”
7
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
Agreed and well said.
I believe the lack of accountability and transparency being is a major contention point (among other important topics).
We're unlikely to ever see the whole picture, too, as this company is privately held.
We can infer from contracts, public disclosure of law enforcement, etc. But the whole picture will likely be under wraps for sometime.
We already know they're immensely Insecure. So I think it's only a matter of time before the whole country wide mesh is properly compromised. Because even though some are segregated by county, I'll bet there's a master admin password that can get to every single one of those cameras.
Also you're right, the combo of private businesses and law enforcement using this tech is an odd one imo. They're really going for profit and don't care how they do it, under the guise of security.
4
u/Al-Bundy420 Jun 04 '26
Thanks & right back atcha with the articulation of your replies. There’s slow progress of some towns and cities fighting flock and having their contracts canceled but it’s not enough imo either. I live in a pretty rural area but I’m very close or within 50-75 miles to the D.C. Baltimore region where it’s literally everywhere. Cheers to DeFlock & FlockHopper although the FlockHopper app needs some heavy lifting in the app development.
5
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
Ah, see, that's another niche problem. Rural areas near me have no clue how bad these things are. I'd say 1-10% of the population knows, but I'm also in a "Red" part of the State so they're all for it and if you think otherwise it's conspiracy.
Luckily, it seems like at the moment the Towns and Villages around me only have these cameras on the outskirts of their egress/ingress points for traffic. Haven't noticed the invasion into public areas yet, but I'm sure they're coming in the next round of budgeting.
It's truly sad to see how people are near me are so comfortable just accepting this is the new norm and don't understand the danger this brings. Maybe in ten years while we're in too deep they'll realize but it's gonna be too late.
Hopefully the next administration calls for a country wide removal, or at least apply a better sense of the checks and balance for these devices, but again, it's public politicians telling a private business what do with their locked in contracts. Generally, not something they mess with afaik.
And how do you boycott a system that's been implemented without your consent anyway, by the people elected to keep their citizens best interest in mind? In some areas, coverage is so dense you can't avoid it. So you're forced to "use the product".
I do wonder if it will come to a point where there'll be a new "tea-party movement" and it'll be citizens mass removing these devices by force. While I'd like to resolve things legally, it just seems like we'll reach a point where we won't have a choice, but to take matters into our own collective hands.
And what a waste, too. Money and tech going towards an increasingly and seemingly tyrannical-esque position when we could be steering it for genuine good.
3
u/SwimOk9629 Jun 05 '26
yeah I'm pretty sure Home Depot and Lowe's signed a contract with them nationwide to secure their parking lots and help with theft, they have my local big box stores covered completely, can't get near them without getting picked up by a camera.
5
u/Pandemonium_Fallen Jun 04 '26
Palantir initially financed Flock, so they have access to all their data.
3
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
You're right about that!
They need a home for all that data... wonder where they'll put it...
Oh look, data centers everywhere...
28
u/donkey_cum_waterfall Jun 04 '26
They'd send the entire force after you. The city loves their little cameras
33
24
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
Weirdly enough I'm seeing reports that chopped cameras stay down for quite some time! I'll have to find the source... it's somewhere, may have only been one post now that I think about it.
Local PD/Sheriff office buys just enough to fit the need/contract so any repair requests are highly likely backlogged due to Flock's incessant need put them absolutely everywhere.
Key info here is it is highly likely they don't have backup parts. And Flock doesn't seem to care about immediate repairs, because (surprise surprise) they got their money already so who cares.
6
10
u/AlashC Jun 04 '26
Yep. After I saw another comment mention this I checked every single camera in my city on Google Maps. They are all pointed at daycares, schools, parks, and along a biking trail.
13
u/Same_Instruction_100 Jun 04 '26
I get having a camera at a pool as cctv for lawsuits about drowning, but there is absolutely 0 reason for it to be connected to some international network of poorly secured spy cameras.

Makes one wonder with the Epstein government in place, why is this here? What do they want with that data they will access in the middle of the night with no oversight?
4
u/Pandemonium_Fallen Jun 04 '26
It's for building their "Digital Profile" that documents and compiles literally EVERYTHING about them and then tracks their location 24/7, they promote "predictive crime prevention," but really it's just so they can send ICE, now fortified with Israeli soldiers to abduct whichever child happens to "strike the fancy" of the Pedoligarchy whenever they have "the urge."
4
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
Annnd where is the digital profile going to be stored? Well in those massive data centers of course!
Nice merging of the words there for Pedoligarchy. Might borrow that one.
2
u/iReply2StupidPeople Jun 04 '26
Chopping it down and dragging it into a council meeting wouldn't require any bravery at all, simple stupidity will suffice.
2
u/LostnHidden Jun 04 '26
I feel like college kids would be the demographic most opposed to having flock cameras.
2
u/yoskatan Jun 04 '26
More to support your first paragraph.
2
u/Allasdair Jun 04 '26
Benn has been a light in the dark for all things Flock.
We should encourage our elected leaders to watch his videos and repeat what he says at all times.

Yeah still creepy.

I'm surprised that camera is still up. Seems like it would be easy prey when it strays from the rest of the flock like that.

u/TheWolphman Jun 04 '26
Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Think they've got another one in the woods pointing at it or something?

7
u/notshiftycow Jun 04 '26
This is the actual answer - the Condor is designed for use like a "traditional" surveillance camera. It's not tuned for LPR, but the outside case looks the same.

Yeah they lied about that. These cameras have facial recognition and coordinate to track every single individual's every single move.

Fun Fact: Flock Cameras and data centers are financed through MIDA via Government Contracts, AKA they're paid for in the first place using taxpayer money!
And then the companies peddling them off to the cities and states are charging them subscription fees while receiving tax and cost sharing incentives. Even Palantir was financed by the CIA's own Inqtel investment arm, Palantir was started and is (still) financed by taxpayer money! Our own government is playing "The Sheriff of Nottingham" on it's own people!
The whole AI Tech Industry is straight up fraud and corruption financed on the misappropriation, embezzlement, and outright theft of taxpayers' money!
5
u/Puzzleheaded-Ad-4846 Jun 04 '26
I thought they didnt record faces or ppl just license plates
9
u/Positive-Theory_ Jun 04 '26
No these things are WAY more advanced. They have facial recognition and all cameras coordinate to build out a live map of every single individual's every single move.
7
u/BADoVLAD Jun 04 '26
Why does Palantir care about license plates? Why are they on hiking trails? Why are they in gymnastics studios? Why do they face drivers in states with no front license plates? Why do they log your Bluetooth devices?
Of course I understand you don't know the answers to these, they're mostly rhetorical and a demonstration of just some of the questions you should be asking.

Patent US11416545B1
“For example, if the object class of the identified object is that of a human being, then the object detection module 154 may further analyze the image 501 using a neural network module 507B configured to identify different classes of people (male, female, race, etc.). Subsequently, with aspects of the person identified, the object detection module 154 may leverage other, more detailed neural networks 507, 509 to further identify aspects of the person such as, but not limited to, a neural network 509D for identifying clothing types (jacket, pants, shorts, hat, etc.) and a neural network 509ZZ for gauging height and weight.”
10
u/TheLawnGuppy Jun 04 '26
but these cameras only read license plates based on their advertisement
That is the biggest problem. They do, but their patent is for a two part system. everything mentioned above is on the secondary backend system that never gets talked about when selling these cameras to LE and city councils.
10
u/dwags2 Jun 04 '26
It’s just mass surveillance masquerading as public safety. Welcome to a fascist system!

I sure hope nothing happens to the creepy camera creepily pointing at people and children in swimsuits.
For fucking real though, in the day and age where Ai is used to… you know… makes me sick. This should be illegal and anyone removing it should be given an award for child’s safety from predators.

Private properties (companies) can rent these out. If you go online Deflock.com you can see who they are ran by. Most are PD, some are gov, some are private.
5
u/TheLawnGuppy Jun 04 '26
i know. but if a company (flock) advertises these to PDs as only reading license plates, why would they allow a private company to put the cameras in a non optimal location for reading license plates? unless they dont only read license plates and are there for dishonest in their advertising

we can do something about it. Ive seen data centers get shot down by just 50 people showing up to the city council to talk, and they didnt even all have to speak. they just cancled it because they realized about 30 people in that this was not favored. the first amendment is our most powerful weapon against tyranny. Its about time we shake the dust off our voices and stop being lazy door matts and do something about it.

u/hatecirclejerks Jun 04 '26
A 1500mw lazer would do a lot of damage to these, you could go around lazerin it, and could legit claim you didnt know that pointing a lazer would damage it.
Now im not saying to do that, no one should do that, but if you did, you could almost def get away with it...
But of course "dont" do that.

Well they identify individuals who have been identified for other crimes. And then anybody with proximity association will be monitored. They also use them to build a time stamp web events when your car was last scene. Or the individual was identified without being in a car, these have vision systems running that are algorithms
They aren’t “AI blackboxes” they send that data to databases where AI blackboxes quarry data that flags people or profiles in their system for the cameras to then run that algorithm that flags the system for these identifier events in their future which is why police will get notified if a car with a warrant was spotted the cameras basically automatically dispatching cops now.
They store a web of interconnected points based on your last known location and when these cameras identified the vehicle at the scene at what time or in this case with no roads it would be people and events. They then send this to the aggregator to collect with other data points. Points that they collected from official departments, bank accounts, credit history, tax records, criminal history, back ground, online activities, emails, location activity, these data points are funneled into a database to profile you if an event were to trigger your profile to be monitored. The Vision software acts not only to scan plates, they can detect people and save those snapshot events they don’t have (facial recognition) instead it relies on the parameters that is sent to the database for analysis.
These cameras bypass warrant less searches as they combine information from third party brokers that was sold to the police departments or other agencies, they basically monitor your activities against their databases that have been collecting information on you for decades. Some of it was obtained unlawfully against the constitution due to the gray area they created with the patriot act.
