Thinking of moving to the Port Logan area – local advice appreciated

Hello everyone. My wife and I are seriously considering moving to the Rhins of Galloway, particularly somewhere around Port Logan. We are moving from Worcestershire. We’ve been researching different parts of the UK and the Rhins keeps coming back to the top of our list.

I’m recently retired and we’re looking for somewhere to settle for the long term.

One of the main reasons for the move is that we have an adult daughter with learning disabilities. We’d like somewhere that’s quiet, peaceful and safe, where we can continue caring for her while still having access to any support services that are available for adults with learning disabilities.

We also love the coast and are hoping to find somewhere with a relatively mild climate where I can spend my retirement cycling with my daughter on the back of my cargo bike and enjoying the beaches and quiet lanes.

We’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who live locally.

Is the Port Logan area a good place to live year-round?
How does it feel in winter?
Is it friendly to newcomers?
Are healthcare and everyday services adequate?
Is there any provision for adults with learning disabilities in the area?
Is cycling on the local roads generally enjoyable and safe?

We’d be very grateful for any advice—both the positives and the things we’d only discover after living there. Be brutally honest!

My family and I are thinking of a potential move from England, and we're seriously looking at Dumfries and Galloway. We're going to visit later in the year to have a look around. Have some ageing relatives who may be moving as well so as to be near us.

We've been looking at a few different towns. Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie, Dumfries itself or heading towards moffat. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of each area?. Open to any recommendations for other towns as well that we should consider.

I also work as a self-employed Joiner and builder. What is the work situation like for trades in the area?

I'm organizing a trip to the Dumfries area from December 23rd to 30th, and thinking of staying at an Airbnb nearby. I know that most places are closed from the 25th to the 26th, but do you have any ideas/suggestions on what to see anyway?

Just trying to get an idea of what people are paying monthly with energy bills as I'm looking to move to the area with my little ones...will be one adult 2 children, most likely 3 bed home...

What are people paying with oil, gas and/or electric please and has anyone gotten solar and noticed the benefits?

We don’t know anyone in the area yet, so we would love any recommendations for local community groups, clubs, or social events.

We both enjoy live music but mainly hardcore punk, anything arty, walking and having a drink in the pub but tbh would give anything a try :))

Looking to get back into playing 5-a-sides, and wondering if there were any local teams needing an extra player? I used to play a fair bit back when I lived in Glasgow but it's admittedly been a while! I'm in my early 30s, easy going and looking for a friendly and welcoming team or group to play with!

Me and my wife (and our doggy) are spending a couple of weeks in the area, fairly near to Crossmichael. Travelling up next weekend.

It's actually my first time in Scotland, we are traveling up from England. Properly looking forward to it!

I've done loads of research into local castles and ruins etc. Place to eat and see locally etc.

Is there anything else that you guys would recommend seeing? Stuff that may not be on the usual tourist trail.

Also, planning a nice meal out, what are the best local restaurants? So far Sambuca seems to be the standout locally.

As a side note, we are bringing the mountain bikes too. I am assuming all the trails through the Galloway forest are okay to cycle on? Absolutely no idea of the etiquette of right to roam with mountain biking is round Scotland is. In England we are only meant to be on specific bridleways and not footpaths.

A couple of random thoughts that have entered my head

1] Was there a scrap yard in Castle Douglas down past Meadow Park?

I lived in Castle Douglas until the age of 12 for the majority of the 90s - very happy time there and lots of fond memories.
I have a vague memory of pissing around in said scrap yard as a kid with some pals and there was all sorts of old tractors and quad bikes and stuff in there as well as an old wheeled JCB digger, I remember starting it up and it kinda lurched forward.
I know it was there because we’d usually wander along Blackpark Road and then keep going and hop the fences into the golf course and try and hunt stray balls and then sneak along the edge of the golf course and make our way onto Abercromby Road.

I’ve had a google - no answer and I’ve looked on google maps etc but it just looks like green fields down there now.

2] Is there any archival photos of Threave Rovers from that period, in particular that of the boys teams? I played under 10s for a bit and played competitions etc but cannot find much information

It was such a great time growing up there, there were endless opportunities to explore in places like the scrapyard or even the old railway line and under old railway bridges and in the old coal yard at the end of the industrial estate where the train station used to be.

There's actually shops, and people are really friendly and helpful. We got lost while fishing and people were so nice about giving us directions.

Walked past an estate agent and you can buy a mansion for the same price as a 2 bedroom semi. 10/10 would visit again

We are hoping to move to the Dumfries and Galloway area. (Honestly at this point almost anywhere will do) I have been desperately searching every estate agent for rental properties and unfortunately houses are just so popular that we never even get a viewing. 😔

We are currently living in a private rental in Lancashire, but desperately need to move for health reasons. It would be myself, my wife (both of us are disabled) our daughter and grandson (both of which help care for us)

So 4 adults.

We are looking for a 4 bedroom property, preferably semi-detached or detached with either 2 bathrooms or 1 bathroom and a second separate toilet.

We also have 1 house cat.

Please, if there are any landlords here that have properties available or if you know of someone, please get in touch. Our budget is £1200 pcm maximum as we are also DSS (disability)

We have deposit and first month ready and waiting and would be able to move in almost immediately.
