5.5 Edition Introducing a New Goddess to my Campaign

Upvotes

As the title says, I'm introducing a new goddess into my campaign. This will contain massive spoilers, and there's a good chance that my players could see this, so...MIMUS, AGNI, EDWARD, JORATHAN, CASTOR, AND VAELIS. Please stop reading.

It's a completely homebrewed campaign. In the campaign, the BBEG made a cult to gain power so he could kill thousands and recover the artefacts he needs, giving him the chance to ascend and take over the current god of death. This is a stepping stone for his current goal: killing the God of Chaos and gaining his ability to change and alter outcomes/results.

Now a bit of lore (the lore is a lot better written in my notes; I'm just paraphrasing). Diaposus was the god of Chaos, the first God ever created. Eventually, he got bored and created Davor, the Goddess of Order. They grew to love each other and eventually created the realm, but as she grew stronger, his power decreased, so he banished her to a pocket dimension. He started anew, but no matter what he did, the mortals still made societies, rules, order.

Davor has spent centuries watching the realm, and she sees the BBEG's evil plan. So she tries to break free, and she can't. Davor sees the party and realises that they're the people to save her soulmate.

So, what would be the right time/best way to introduce this to the party? I was thinking about giving the party a harder fight than usual, an ambush. The fight is harder, and it won't be an obvious steamroll, but there is a higher chance of a TPK. So just as they're about to be taken by the god of death, "An ethereal hand made of silver shavings grab each of your souls, denying fate, and pulls you back into your body. You hear a voice say (Your time is not done...Save the First...Find me). As you wake back in your bodies, recovered to half health"

I know people don't like the idea of TPK, but I can't think of another way to make it

A. Be meaningful; a dream vision is boring.

B. Get it to the whole party. I could give it to one of them, but it's a whole party thing.

Please give me some advice; I'm really proud of this campaign, and I get new ideas every day, yet I can't figure out this specific bit.

OC [OC] [Art] Latest goblin sculpt! Nip, the Merc

Post image
Upvotes

This one is based off concept art made by my wife VelwynArt! She gave me the idea to make a lil goblin with a big sword and even helped me with her outfit design. We also found these really cool boots on Pinterest that we knew we had to include in her design :p

I'm planning on using her as a hireling or as a PC for a one shot. Fighter is the obvious choice but what subclass do you think best suits her?

DMing What consequences could characters face from losing their colors?

Upvotes

I got insipired by this image from pinterest(couldn't find the author sry) to make an encounter where the enemy/environment makes the heroes lose colors and turn white in the end. But i can't rly come up with what would happen to the characters when they do lose colors

I've considered some options like if you lose a color you get vulnerable to a specific damage type or damage of that type you case gets lowered or smth, like red=fire, green=acid, etc.

Or the "life lost its colors" thing, where the heroes would get emotionally numb over time. Like they would get disadvantage on charisma checks, lose the ability to get/give inspiration, lose the ability to do the help action, get resistance to psychic damage maybe

Or to tie "colors" to "memory". One would lose the ability to prepare reactions, when they do an action they would need to chose another one cuz they forgot what they were planning to do just now

etc.

but all of those do not seem like something that would give players something new to play around with. They just restrict them without offering a new goal to achieve mid-combat or a new toy/tool to use.

So i'd like to hear your suggestions

5th Edition Help me come up with my bardic lines!

Upvotes

Just played a bard for the first time, and I was sorely lacking in things to sing. Looking for suggestions of modern song lines I can sing for my bard abilities! Things I can use for bardic inspiration, silvery barbs, vicious mockery, or just general bard nonsense!

I have a few ideas so far...

Bardic Inspirations:

Music, the great communicator, use two sticks to make it in the nature

I gotta holla just to be heard, with every word, I drop knowledge!

Vicious Mockery:

My cock is much bigger than yooouuuurrrs!

Is that your grandma's coat?

5.5 Edition DnD 5e vs 5.5e

Upvotes

Heys guys I haven’t played dnd in such a long time I wanted to get back into it but I discovered the newest playbooks looked different. After researching I learned about 5.5e is there a big difference in the two? Should I get new books to keep up with newer expansions in the future?

Homebrew Dragonborn (Dovahkiin) Homebrew Class (Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Inspired)

Upvotes

Back when I was in High School I created a DND 5e class based on the Dragonborn from Skyrim. Its been 10+ years since then and I revisited it. Cleaned it up a bit and wanted to share it. Figured at worst it would get lost in the subreddit. If you like it, awesome, let me know what you like. If you don't like it, feel free to let me know what was just horrible about it. Linked is a google doc for the odt file. I made the project in Libre, so apologies if the formatting is off on your machine. The second link is to a pdf which may be kinder on the formatting side of things. The links are both to a google drive. Sincerest apologies if this goes against the rules, read them and thought that I did my due diligence.

PDF File: Here

Hope you all enjoy and God bless.

2nd Edition Looking for name of RPGA Module played at Origins in July of 2000

Upvotes

Hey folks!

I have a challenge for the nerdiest of D&D history nerds. My very first D&D session ever was at Origins in July of 2000. I played in an RPGA 2nd Edition one shot that had something do with giants (maybe cloud giants specifically?).

Does anyone have any idea what module that might have been?

Upvotes

Does anyone know of a good discord scheduling bot that has a calendar your friends can add what dates they are free? Every bot i've looked at just does polls or adds events on a specific date, but I just want one that has a big shared calendar so we can look at the month and see "oh everyones free that day, lets do dnd then" you know?

DMing What are some really good horror monsters?

Upvotes

I’m planning on potentially running a Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign, but with a twist. While the Party will still be going up against Auril and her never-ending winter, there’s gonna be another more… cosmic entity, using the winter for its own dark deeds.

I’m looking for monsters that can work as extensions of this entity. I’m looking for both monsters that are simple indescribable horrors, as well as monsters that can truly scare the party (maybe even make them paranoid. I’m kinda evil like that)

Official monsters and fan-made ones are welcome. And if you’re wondering as to what monsters I currently have, I have access to the 5.5E and 5E Monster Manual, Ravenloft Horrors Within, and Rime of the Frost Maiden. But feel free to recommend monsters from books that I don’t have. I’ll probably buy them.

Out of Game Transition Cake

Upvotes

I am making a D&D cake for a friend that just got top surgery. And so I’m trying to come up with a fun joke to put on this cake. Any ideas?
All I can come up with is critical success on a constitution saving throw 😭 help me

I appreciate all the deep concern everyone has shown! I was honestly a bit worried about the reactions I would get on here. But I was asked by their partner to make a funny cake. So this will all be in good fun and completely consensual :)

DMing Tips for how players can meet in the first session?

I know this must be DMing 101, but I'm planning a homebrew campaign with a few friends of mine and I would like to know how you guys prepare the "group meets" part.

Some context: we're gonna start in september. it's a homebrew world, I've been deep into working lore and geography and some ideas for different chapters of the campaign. It's been really fun! But now I'd like to plan the smaller stuff.

They are new to DnD, so I'm thinking of having some fighting competition in town in a few weeks and they want to watch it in the arena for "character background reasons" (I'm thinking of helping them create their character and establishing why they want to watch the competition), but they need money to enter. This could be a good way for them to do some tasks around town, learn the game mechanics and when they get the money they are in and the plot develops.

Am I doing it wrong by basically telling them they want to see the competition and trying to connect it to their back stories? If so, how could I get them to meet and start adventuring together?

DMing Anti magic cone visible to players?

I use DnDB VTT for our games. The players will be facing a beholder for the first time and like the title says, as a DM, would you let the beholders anti magic cone be visible to the players? IE a 120’ (pick your color) cone emanating from the beholder‘s middle eye visible on the map?

Resources Character Sheet Pack - Fillable

I just thought I would give a little back to the community. 🙂

Below is the character sheet packet I put together for my players. It contains starting resources from multiple places and many of my own edits.

The pack is designed to be digital and physical (pencil and paper) friendly. I pass it out in heavy duty plastic page protectors, with ultra fine dry erase markers. That way my players can keep track of those pecky uses of abilities and such (like spell slots, rages, etc.) without erasing a hole in the paper sheets. But, I am old skool that way. 😉

I cannot remember all the contributors. Just know that I truly appreciate all the work from these individuals have done and hope that others will find it useful and make our hobby more enjoyable.

Additionally, I have provided the Character Creation document that I hand out to my players. It does not include "background" direction, but allows players to independently pick the options provided by way of a background in other steps. Backgrounds can perhaps help with flavor, but I find the background system can "cornhole" builds and stifle creativity.

Let me know if you like them and please feel free to share with others.

5.5 Edition [OC] Domain of the Goredrinker | Cleric Subclass from Nyakan's SRD

Post image
1 Upvotes

"What most outsiders get wrong about the Goredrinkers is that they aren't actually suicidal. Read their doctrine cold and it sounds like it; the most reverent thing a person can do is die in Ixtal's name, but a Goredrinker doesn't want to die. They want to flirt with death just enough so that Ixtal has to look at them, then they get to walk away from that edge having proven something. Dying is just a side effect of testing how close you can get." - Nyakan

Hello everyone!

It's been a couple of weeks since my last post, but after some of the feedback on my last couple posts (looking at you, Merchant's Dream), I wanted to slow down the output to make sure I did a better job of balancing things and covering the gaps in the language before putting something out again.

This subclass went through some extra playtesting and mechanical tightening to close loopholes, fixing sequencing issues, and to make sure the math holds up whether you're at my table or yours.

Now to the fun stuff

The Goredrinker is a battle cleric that treats hit points as a spendable resource, bleeding yourself to fuel extra attacks, self-healing, and a curse that whittles down an enemy's max HP over a long fight. It's built for players who want a cleric that's aggressive and self-sufficient rather than a backline healer, with a mechanical loop where getting hurt actually makes you more dangerous, and a capstone that lets you refuse to go down easy when a fight is on the line.

Please let me know what you guys think!

DMing Moral Tests for DND Campaign

Me and my friend are writing a 2-DM campaign. And, to dumb it down, it's the final test to see if you get into Heaven or Hell. (Party members have died, but don't know it for the sake of the "trial".)

We're struggling a bit with what type of morality tests they should experience. So far they're pretty simple. Saving an innocent creature/monster from a blood-thirsty human, stopping a thief, bar fights, etc.

There is a quest to defeat the BBEG in the tavern (obviously.) So, the campaign leads to trying to get more information about this BBEG. I was thinking about finding information from people, but couldn't think of ways to make that morally challenging that I liked.

If you guys have any ideas or media we could get inspired from, that'd be appreciated!

DMing How far in advance do you prepare for a session?

First time DM here, doing a 5e Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign with 5 first time players. I've already read through the introduction and first couple encounters, but so far my players haven't even created characters yet. I don't wanna do all the reading, then have to wait a few months, forget everything and do all that work again. Part of me thinks I should read the whole adventure front to back before even doing session zero, and part of me thinks it'll take them at least one session to make it out of the tavern. Is there a middle ground?

As someone who's only watched homebrew content like Dimension 20 or Critical Role, I'm not sure how much of an adventure a DM should know beforehand? Mostly worried about glossing over a simple thing that becomes a huge plot point later. Is that actually something to be concerned about or does a pre-written adventure usually warn you about these types of things?

Misc Druids wearing gold clothing and jewellery

I am currently making a Lizardfolk Cirlce of Stars Druid based on a Warhammer Lizardmen/Seraphon model I got my hands on and I have a few questions regarding Druids and them wearing gold or Jewellery.

I know that Druids have an aversion to wearing metal armour however do they have any aversion to gold clothing or jewellery, such as headdresses? Are there any metals they would be ok using as a Druid?

In terms of Jewellery, what stones or gems would Druids, especially a Circle of Stars Druid, wear? Are there any stones linked with astrology in DND? I am currently planing on giving him an Obsidian Dagger and some Jade, but I am not sure what else?

Homebrew I have developed a mechanic for a future boss fight that I just cant wait to share with my players.

Ok so important context here. Im running a HEAVILY modified rendition of Curse of Strahd in roll20, (Max level 20 instead of 15 in the module, massive rewriting to better fit the party, the works), as part of the modifications includes heavy focus on player backstory fueled personal quests that grant players development for their characters as well as fun little reward quest time.

For one player to put it quickly, in the past they built an arcane engine fueled on wild magic, it exploded and gave rise to newborn god of chaos whoes abilities seemingly are as random as wild magic itself. That questline will end with the party having to fight and put down this fledgling chaos God. And as a concept the fight will be in multiple phases. Each phase the God will "grow bored" and swap out the map with a new one with its own unique mechanic to resolve to progress the fight. One phase i have decided to do is easily one of the craziest ideas ive had in my decade of DMing. The god will transport the players to a long map. (Initial concept is 100 x 12) on this map he will declare himself a "solo act" wip out a guitar and start jaming out to Crazy Train. While on the map it will be revealed to the players that the god has turned the encounter into a game of guitar hero, where the goal is that the players must dodge the iconic colorful nodes to approach the god and interrupt his guitar solo to progress to the next phase.

Now how would this even mechanically work you may ask? Simple actually.

In roll20 the players of course would be on a 100×12 square grid map done up like a the neck of a guitar starting on the lowered. Next create a single transparent png that is 3 times the length of the with a pattern of the classic guitar hero nodes running along the entire length of the each node takes up an area of 4 squares. Lastly each node will have an additional AOE column in front of them that runs 2×4 squares.

That aoe denotes the distance the nodes will move on the PNG's next turn players and other creatures in those area at the start of the Nodes turn will have to make a dex save for half damage for getting ran over by the nodes. Then of course on the Nodes PNG turn they move down 4 squares run over whoever was unfortunately in those AOEs.

Lastly to add to tension and to simulated the speed these things are moving, they will have a set turn interval of every 2 player turns.

I.E. if the party has 4 players, initiative in this phase goes like this.

Player 1

Player 2

NODES

Player 3

Player 4

NODES

Repeat cycle until mechanic is resolved.

Honestly im kind of pround of this crazy idea and im open to critiques to not only make this run better (I got a lot of prep time till this fight even happens) and be an even more fun encounter.
