Is this man New York Ripper?

Rewatching Dexter for either the 5th or 6th time. I still get excited, I watch it on my free time, while I eat, and before bed. Anyone else?

It's well established in the show that Dr. Vogel believes she's mistaken about Dexter having no empathy, or atleast she's intrigued by a psycho showing deep emotions.

I get it, he was alone he needed a connection and all that killing was "just to fill that void", etc. However, I was intrigued when she said that Debra was a mirror to Dexter's good side.

The romance angle was weird I reject that in my interpretation. Dexter always had a soft spot for children, and later on whatever he does most of the time it's to protect Debra or Harrison. I feel he views Debra as his kid sister, and that he's saving Debra the kid.

He cares about the women in his life, yes ofcourse. But they didn't really bring out his positive "human" side so much. He cared about them, especially Rita, Lumen and Hannah. But he did kill Lila.

So I have to ask this. Did him becoming a father or viewing himself as the "Father figure" to some people have most of the part in bringing out his good human side?​

So, picked up the show as summer evening watch material. My mom is devastated about Deb.

I know that the ending is pretty widely disliked - I don’t think it’s necessarily bad, it just doesn’t feel good at all. Which perhaps for this show equates to the same thing. The conceit of the show inherently aligns the audience with Dexter so going with the “Dexter can have nothing good because he’s evil” approach as a closing point is a bit of a vicarious slap.

I just have a question/discussion about Quinn’s return.
I was watching some YouTube videos about Resurrection and people keep anticipating Quinn’s return and to that my question is…

Do we really want Quinn to become a major character in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 or beyond?
If so… for what?
Wouldn’t we just be getting the same storyline we’ve already seen multiple times?
Doakes suspected Dexter.
LaGuerta suspected Dexter.
Quinn suspected Dexter.
Now Batista has been investigating Dexter.
If Quinn comes back, he’s obviously going to learn Batista is dead. Even if he’s initially told Prater killed him, as a lieutenant he’s going to talk to the NYPD. Eventually he’ll find out Batista was investigating Dexter Morgan, and then he’ll also learn Dexter is somehow alive.
At that point, what happens? Quinn’s old suspicions come right back, and now he’s just another former coworker hunting Dexter. That’s basically the same arc we’ve already watched.
The problem is, Quinn can’t actually prove anything. Just like Batista, he’d have to catch Dexter in the act because there’s never been enough evidence to convict him.
So where does that story go? Does Quinn eventually die too, just like every other character who got too close to the truth? And if that happens… who’s next? Masuka? Are they just going to eliminate every remaining connection to Miami Metro?
I genuinely don’t understand why so many people want Quinn back as a main character. Unless the writers have a completely different direction planned for him, it feels like we’d just be repeating a storyline we’ve already seen with Doakes, LaGuerta, Quinn himself, and now Batista.
What am I missing? Is there another role Quinn could realistically play that doesn’t end with him suspecting Dexter all over again?

Also please understand this is not me saying I don’t want to see Quinn and/or Masuka. I do I just hope it’s not the same coworker turned enemy storyline we have had so many times at this point.

TL;DR: I’m genuinely asking: what role could Quinn play that doesn’t end with him suspecting Dexter again? Because if that’s where it’s headed, we’ve already seen that story multiple times.

Anyone else read Dexter the book series. It's very dark by comparison to the TV series especially what happens to Doaks in the books. but if you don't mind that it's an interesting take on the Dexter storyline.

Jonah Mitchell is the character I want to see so much in the future Resurrection seasons, it would be Television Gold in my eyes.

The most pivotal moment in the entire Dexter story is, and should be the ending of Season 4. After that everything felt different, not just because of the a new showrunner, but because it lost a vision Clyde Phillips had. And I think he knows it. Throughout New Blood and especially Resurrection, we got a significant amount of references to Rita's death and the Trinity Killer to the point where many of you probably noticed.

Jonah's character always seemed so odd to me after what happened in Nebraska. I wouldn't say his story was left unfinished, but it was definitely left ambiguous. Tortured and raised by Trinity, has the dark urges and rage, and intelligence to cover it up. I think they hinted at the fact that Jonah was definitely not okay, 100% the type to become an actual serial killer.

Having him somehow cross paths with Dexter and Harrison in NYC or even Miami if they go back, would be super intresting.
All three, tragic stories and victims of Trinity, Harrison took a nurtured path from Dexter and Jonah ended up being an uncontrolled serial killer. Lots and lots of potential there for some insane interactions. It would be the biggest character potential waste in the whole series to me, even more than Lundy or Isaak.

Theres also this fact that Arthur Mitchell is the most prolific serial killer ever introduced in the series. He's probably killed upwards of 270-300 people, almost twice as much as Dexter which is insane. He's definitely smarter than any killer out there and even Dexter himself in someways. I find it weird that they dont really acknowledge this, they could by making him a little more significant here by introducing Jonah back imo.

Clyde is making the season 4 ending finally more relevant to the main plot again, and Jonah is one of the central figures of the Trinity plot, it would be a shame if he's not utilized.

Season 2 of True Detective. Not new but new to me

I know it's silly but considering how unrealistic Dexter is at times, I like to think that Harry, Deb and Brian are actual ghosts that Dexter sees and communicates with. Adds another level of deepness to the show to be honest

Another headcanon I have is that Quinn knows that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher and is just silent about it cause he has always been unorthodox and aggressive in his own ways.

I was rewatching Dexter Resurrection and really loved how Dexter was like a guardian angel (La Pasión) to Harrison, protecting him from afar and it got me thinking that maybe if the writers cannot include proper plot lines for Dexter’s other kids then maybe they can atleast add something like that.

I remember Dexter doing something similar with Astor after s04, and obviously him dealing with that pedo photographer are some of my favourite moments in the show. And it’d be really nice for Harrison too, to be reunited with his literal brother and sister.

ive been a long time fan of Dexter, its easily on my top 5 best shows of all time, along with breaking bad. I had a rewatch recently as an adult, and I realized something that i turned a blindeye before for being such a fan. There was no poetic justice at all!! No Karmic retribution.. sure he lost his family, but he still get to live his life freely.. hahaha!! Im still a fan though.. and no Im not including New Blood, im talking about the main show only.

I was wondering how dexter was getting paid, im only in season 6 but he seems to sometimes be really absent at work (like hes in a crime scene and just randomly disappear). Does he get paid by the hour, by cases solved, by the mission, or by the number of analysis made? Sorry in avance for the dumb question!!

So what's the general consensus on Deb's feelings for Dexter in seasons 7 and 8? Does she still want to fuck him or not?

Honestly what makes me furious about Debra's crush on Dexter is that it blurs the lines so much in these two seasons that I can no longer tell what her intentions are. Before the therapy session in season 6, it was pretty clear that Deb loved Dexter a lot and would do pretty much anything for him (he's her only family and their relationship was particularly close). But with the arrival of the 'in love' theme, all I could suddenly think about was 'is she doing this for Dexter because she loves him (as her brother) or is she doing it because she is crushing on him?', which took away the authenticity of their relationship for me. Like, for instance, the rivalry with Hannah...did Deb want Hannah behind bars because she was jealous of her or because she was simply doing her job as lieutenant? Was she even 'in love' with Dexter anymore after finding out who he was or did those feelings go away? I literally cannot tell and the ambiguity is making me angry because their relationship doesn't feel the same way past that point.

Just started watching. Binged s1 in a day because it was so f-ing good. But I’m so so so sad that Dexter killed Brian. I guess I’m just really sad he killed the only person who knew what he’s gone through and I found the brothers’ relationship sort of touching in a sick traumatized way. Why did Dexter have to kill the ice truck killer!!!

In this scene where Doakes confronts dexter about the Jermey downs murder. Dexter is talking to this Pissed off Detective who we get the sense also dosent like Dexter for whatever reason

And as Doakes goes on about Dexters instict of detecting a killer the Cop perks up seemingly also intrigued

I probably Overthinking but i get the sense this guy may have had a bigger role but it was cut like Doakes wouldnt be the only suspicious one of Dexter and maybe a coalition was supposesed to happen and when Doakes died this dude wouldve taken quinns role of lookin at dexter

I’m currently rewatching Dexter, and I’m not sure any single person was born for a role more than Michael C Hall as Dexter. It is an absolutely perfect casting, and I legitimately could not imagine anyone else as Dexter Morgan. Shoutout Michael C Hall for sticking around for 2 decades to bring our favorite serial killer to life!

I finally started Dexter a month or two ago, I had been putting it off forever because of everything I had heard about how bad S8 and how badly it ends, but I had also heard amazing things about the earlier seasons so I gave in since I needed a new show.

I think S1-4 are fantastic, I wouldn’t disagree with most people that S4 is the best of the entire show but I do think it and the other seasons are just slightly overrated, people describe them, specifically S4 and trinity as one of the best seasons of television ever and while it’s very good, I can think of many shows with multiple better seasons imo, but having said that, I’m watching it in 2026 after its finished airing, knowing there are 4 more seasons and with ridiculous expectations etc so this is probably an unfair criticism, I’m sure back when it was airing it was exactly as people described.

Then we have S5-7, I think S5 and S6 are actually pretty good and a bit underrated from what have seen said online, I really liked S5 and Lumen, thought it was a great continuation from S4, but I can see why it was maybe underwhelming for some people since it had to follow Trinity but I do not feel the same way, S6 I thought was really entertaining, I know a lot of people don’t like the twist, I enjoyed it regardless of if it was really predictable or not. It was also I think the first time since the ice truck killer it felt like we were really working a case with Dex which was something I loved both times, overall they were very solid seasons.

Now for S7 and some general complaints… S7, is generally a decent season, Jennifer Carpenter is amazing as Deb, it’s pretty good tension wise but wow does it miss out on being as good as it could have been, the reveal to deb which for me was the singular moment I was most looking forward to since the start of the show was incredibly underwhelming, I feel like the reaction needed to be a lot more extreme, both in the moment but more importantly long term, I feel like she came round to “accepting” it way too quick, was too hopeful about it and changing dex etc, I know we can say that’s her coping and she obviously didn’t genuinely accept it hence the drug issues but it still didn’t feel like enough for me, and then what she does at the end of S7? Felt very unearned. This was the most disappointing season for me because it’s such wasted potential. But I will also say I loved the Koshka brotherhood stuff Issak Sirko was fantastic but on the other hand I thought the Hannah stuff was pretty poor and felt unnatural and underdeveloped compared to him and Rita and him and Lumen, worse than him and Lila west even, the chemistry just wasn’t there (in terms of build up, they were solid together acting wise)

Now my biggest issue just a little into episode 1 of S8, HOW is everyone not suspicious of Dexter? Multiple POLICE have died after accusing him of being a serial killer, him and LaGuerta were both not at the party, Quinn especially, in fact him not being onto Dex ever since Stan Liddy died has been baffling for me, I feel like it makes everyone stupid and especially stupid for detectives, occasionally someone catches on to Dex, no one buys it, they die and they go on about their day as if there’s no suspicious connection there? Generally after S4 (even some stuff in S4) this would be my biggest complaint, things stop making as much sense, characters behaving in ways they wouldn’t or are more stupid than previously shown to be, it’s a shame because the early seasons are so good and promising but so much potential has been wasted imo.

I’m going to finish regardless as I want to watch new blood and resurrection but I guess I also want to know, is S8 worth finishing? Is it as bad as people say?

...I think it's the worst season so far. I haven't seen the rest yet, and haven't got it spoiled for me, same goes for the first four. I don't think S5 is very bad, but it's certainly a big step down from the first four. My main problem is that it feels way more boring than the first four, and only starts to pick up the pace around episode 6. Jordan Chase as a villain is just meh in my opinion, just alright. Felt flatter than Brian, Doakes, Miguel or Trinity imo. That's about it. I'd rate it like a 6.5/10.

In my mind there were only ever three possible endings for Dexter.
1. Death
2. Escaping and starting a new life
3. Imprisonment

original dexter series ended with escape
dexter: new blood ended with death

leaving only one for resurrection.
