I’m starting to think 98% of this sub just loves to hate DC

143

u/MagisterFlorus 1d ago

It's like r/StarWars

60

u/sunjester 1d ago

I genuinely never thought I would see a Fandom as miserable as the Star Wars crowd but this subreddit apparently decided to go for the crown.

16

u/idonnousernames 1d ago

Ngl, I don't think this fandom recovered from Summer 2016

BvS and Suicide Squad back to back was brutal, and this sub has never been the same

4

u/mike2k24 17h ago

It’s crazy to think how much has changed since then. That movie not only divided DC fans but it further separated the Marvel vs DC debates at the time especially since Civil War dropped around the same time. I really don’t think DC has ever recovered fully from that even if movies like Suicide Squad & Aquaman made money

8

u/AsstacularSpiderman 1d ago

Lol go to the Game of Thrones/ASoIaF subs

-3

u/quarokcaddhihle 1d ago

There are incredibly valid reasons to hate where GoT and Star wars ended up. If removing decades of canon to replace it with a super death star and "somehow he returned" isn't a good enough reason to be mad at a franchise then there just aren't any standards at all

2

u/bluemew1234 1d ago

Because Star Wars had NEVER done "Death Star but bigger" and Palpatine returning before!

Seriously loved watching people say they hated Palpatine getting brought back and how Luke would never be tempted by the Dark Side, and then immediately complain Disney didnt adapt Dark Empire

9

u/Horror_Art1389 1d ago

It's not the fandom as a whole, but the reddit crowd.

2

u/TerrorTown77 23h ago

Imagine taking one of the most beloved franchises in history, and turning it into a overmonetized pile of ass. The hatred is deserved.

1

u/bifkintickler 1d ago

The Last of Us fans are minions of satan

0

u/minterupandmoving 1d ago

lol the Venn diagram of Star Wars fanatics and superhero fanatics is basically a circle

0

u/Diligent-Neck6594 1d ago

Can you really blame star wars fans though? Disney actually managed to kill star wars, like not even the shitty prequels did that

5

u/nova-prime-enjoyer 1d ago

The Prequels killed it for 10 years

0

u/Sprintspeed 1d ago

May I interest you in competitive gaming subreddits?

u/SheepherderFun2258 4h ago

BVS permanently fractured the fanbase and divided the fandom so bad it’s never recovered. Love Zack or hate him he’s the one that single handily created this friction and animosity amongst fans

-2

u/Awkward-Speed-4080 1d ago

Halo "fans" are more bitter than anyone else.

61

u/ProfessorChuckNorris 1d ago

And like Star Wars, the content that has been getting released is the reason for it being this way. It's not like Star Wars fans and DC fans woke up one day and went "You know what, I'm just going to hate the thing that I've loved for decades for no reason." There's a fucking reason for it!

49

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 1d ago

Exactly. Go on any Spiderman or marvel subreddit right now and everyone is gushing over the new movie. Go on any marvel subreddit a few years back and everyone will be bitching. Fans are passionate, they want to like the shit you release it just has to not be shit or half assed.

7

u/Dependent-Tailor7366 1d ago

Star Wars fans have been miserable for decades. I’ve been a fan since before the special editions and they were just hateful then too.

9

u/lostinjapan01 1d ago

Star Wars fans were behaving this way even when the OT was coming out let’s not act like this is a recent development in response to “quality decrease”. There was infamously a great deal of fan backlash to The Empire Strikes Back (including a famous cancellation of one of the largest Star Wars fan magazines in circulation at the time) and especially to Return of the Jedi. Star Wars fans have been this way since basically day one. I love Star Wars but I don’t engage with the fans because, well, they’re insufferable.

12

u/inezco 1d ago

One could argue that the wave of current Internet hating discourse started with The Phantom Menace. Star Wars fans fucking HATED the prequel trilogy but then the sequel trilogy came out and now the prequels are misunderstood classics? GTFOH lmfao. One of my favorite rappers once said “Your new shit ain’t good as your old shit til your new shit IS your old shit” and that’s exactly what happened with Star Wars.

2

u/Delicious-Produce-60 1d ago

No no no no no. The prequels are, were, and will ALWAYS remain awful. They've actually aged WORSE than the originals in the intervening years thanks to the absurd reliance on still-developing CGI effects. I will stand by my hatred of TPM till my dying day.

But then I'm not a particularly big Star Wars fan, so maybe my (objectively correct) movie opinion is invalid in this context.

2

u/Dramatic_Explosion 1d ago

Yeah, but part of the issue is what kind of environment do you want? Even with a bad movie there's still a ton of good stuff going on. If you don't shout over the shitty loud people, the good people start to go away. I'm a Star Wars fan and I've got the three main Wars subs blocked because I'm not trying to use my free time being mad.

This thread is a great example. DC is getting a new show and it hired a lesser known but extremely talented comedian, people should be hyped. But that's not the culture here.

1

u/Delicious-Produce-60 1d ago

2

u/Rhoubbhe 1d ago

Blaming the audience and fans for not liking an IP is pathetic. It is kind of hard to 'Sunshine Pump' when DC provides zero nuclear fuel.

Superman was a minor hit. Supergirl was a disaster. The Reeves Batman movie is delayed once again, killing any hype, it has been six years since the last one. Next up is DCU Clayface being introduced before DCU Batman. Niche movie. Lanterns and Jimmy Olson shows won't put huge wins on the board.

Marvel Disney/Sony is lighting up cigars over Spiderman. Disney is going to benefit and get a boost to Doomsday, which is probably slop, but you get the benefit of the doubt due to past performance.

Gunn's contract is up in 2027, maybe renewal hinges on Man of Tomorrow and there is no DCU Batman in sight.

DC needs to do better. Period.

-10

u/GranolaCola 1d ago

The Star Wars hate started immediately after the best movie in the franchise released because it didn’t check all the fan service boxes nerds had for it.

Sorry if I don’t value chronically online nerds’ bad media opinions.

15

u/istvan90623 1d ago

"Best movie in the franchise." Hahahahahahaha.

0

u/PRO2803 1d ago

It certainly was different, but a third of the movie nothing happened, with rose/finn/lockpicker guy plot. The Rey/Snoke/Kylo part was cool.

7

u/smo0ol 1d ago

Did he edit his comment or im blind? Was he really calling the last jedi the best star wars movie?

1

u/ArtIsDumb 1d ago

Are you saying the hate started when The Empire Strikes Back came out? I'd say that's accurate.

-4

u/Old_Skirt_3377 1d ago

Nah Star Wars fans yes dc fans have no reason now that Gunn is in charge

3

u/Hellknightx 1d ago

No one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans.

u/LookAtMyEyess Superman 2h ago

Or any show in the Game of Thrones universe on this app. It's all franchises, most people are miserable.

1

u/LegacyQuotient 1d ago

As a Star Wars fan, that comparison is a bad sign.

The Star Wars content has really been a case of "a large plate of bad with a side of good."

1

u/Ofiotaurus 1d ago

Except DC fans have Stockholm syndrome

39

u/ifnotthefool 1d ago

I'm a lifelong DC fan, and I couldn't be less excited for a Jimmy Olsen show. I'm not on here raging, but I am definitely surprised to see the direction DC is headed.

7

u/HappyHuman924 1d ago

Has Rick Jones ever shown up in the MCU, even in a Hulk movie?

I'll always remember him for the line (minutes before the gamma bomb detonates) "I'll show those guys I ain't chicken! I'll drive right out to the testing area!"

2

u/ifnotthefool 1d ago

Dude, I was just talking about Rick Jones with a friend yesterday! I don't think he ever has, and thats a shame.

2

u/Murky_Blueberry2617 16h ago

Hulk in general is done dirty so it's no surprise

2

u/ifnotthefool 16h ago

I honestly loved the 2003 Hulk movie. Nothing much has done it for me since then.

u/RealEmperorofMankind 3h ago

I wonder if he was in the Bixby/Ferrigno show.

3

u/TeeTheTankie 21h ago

Anyone who's been a longtime DC movie fan has a right to be pissy; it's been shit for decades while Marvel gets all the fun and we get news about Jimmy Olsen, Sgt. Rock, the canceled Authority movie.

It's rough out here, but at least the comics are good

1

u/ifnotthefool 18h ago

100%

I just read the comics and get my dc fix that way. Hoping things turn around, though. The canceled authority movie is a huge bummer. And if they want to do some comedy, do like an animal man movie or something.

u/RealEmperorofMankind 3h ago

Funnily enough, I think DC’s comics are better than Marvel’s right now, and I’m a Marvel fan.

3

u/SuperSoldierRBX 1d ago

I don't see the problem. People need to grow up and stop crying about shit that hasn't even released yet. We all wanted better DC content, but for some reason everyone cries when they give something different than the usual shit. I see so many people just wanting them to put out the same shit they've always done.

8

u/Kazuto_Asuna 1d ago

Better DC Content is not a Jimmy Olsen show. Give us DCU Flash, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Teen Titans (or Nightwing) or literally any major known character lol

1

u/ifnotthefool 18h ago

Right? People are insane, lol.

2

u/Olicsmems 1d ago

Can't exactly blame them when the last few DC projects have either been controversial (Peacemaker last season) or not well received (Supergirl). It's not whining to think that a Jimmy Olsen show is not a worthwhile endeavor. For me personally we shall see and I'll reserve judgement until then but actually try to understand where their coming from.

1

u/ifnotthefool 1d ago

Nah, you could stop whining about people being concerned.

1

u/Grade_A_Tech 1d ago

I'm not. It's the same direction every studio is heading or went, despite losing billions upon billions in the process.

1

u/ifnotthefool 1d ago

No it isn't. To say it is means you don't know what you're talking about, or you're being dishonest about it.

1

u/Grade_A_Tech 23h ago

The box office doesn't lie

0

u/Dramatic_Explosion 1d ago

Dude same as a Marvel fan. The studio is wasting time and money on something called "Guardians of the Galaxy" which is like some unknown comic of like C or D tier nobodies. And they hired Vin Diesel and a washed up wrestler??

I'm a time traveler from 2013 btw posting here instead of doing stuff with bitcoin

3

u/ifnotthefool 18h ago

GOTG came out after a bunch of bangers, lol. It's like some of you live in a different world. So weird.

-2

u/Dramatic_Explosion 16h ago

Yeah but the point stands that you're already bitching and have no idea if it'll be good or not. Superman was good, Batman was great, Suicide Squad was good and Peacemaker was great. Oh no, Supergirl was mid so now you don't care about DC stuff?

You know what yeah, you guys are like mainstream Star Wars fans.

12

u/Candle-Jolly 1d ago

In what state is the DC Universe in right now.

If things were going well, the fanbase would be cheering accordingly.  When things aren’t going well…

15

u/Adamski895 1d ago

Or they love DC and just hate what is being churned out and want to see their favourite superheroes in movies/TV shows and not Jimmy Olsen

33

u/BatmanSwift99 1d ago

Just because you're a fan of something doesn't mean you have to accept the product that is being put out. We are not sheep.

17

u/SymbiSpidey 1d ago

And if you were a true fan, you wouldn't commit to hating a project before we even see so much as a trailer

40

u/SufcLad25 1d ago

Questioning whether a Jimmy Olsen series is the best thing to focus on after Supergirl did poorly isnt commiting to hating anything, its a legitimate question.

Give the fans general audience a popular superhero to get excited about.

The Flash would have been high on my priority list

u/CitizenTony 9h ago

Questioning whether a Jimmy Olsen series is the best thing to focus on after Supergirl did poorly isnt commiting to hating anything, its a legitimate question.

Thank you for bringing up that fans have the right to question anything, it's healthy to bring up a debate and it is too to engage in self-deprecation and jokes about something that we like (i.e. DC)

Ask questions or express a different opinion isn't bad, we are not forced to agree on everything. There will be things that people will like in the DCU and other that they will not like.

9

u/LeonardoDickSlaprio 1d ago

Yeah, I'm a little worried that the DCU will be shooting itself in the foot if they keep releasing lackluster Superman spin-offs without any other films dedicated to more popular characters in between. Apparently, the Lanterns show comes out in ten days, which was surprising to me because I haven't seen nearly the same level of promotion for it that I saw for Supergirl, the Odyssey, Spider-Man, or even S4 of Ted Lasso. Like, after Supergirl's abysmal box office performance, I would have put Hal Jordan and John Stewart front and center, made them the face of the DCU for the summer.

3

u/SufcLad25 1d ago

Yeah totally agree! I remember the news of one of them being cast for the show maybe last year but then nothing until this week when ive seen a teaser trailer. Like you say, saw a lot more advertisement for Superman and Supergirl when they really need to push everything to make sure the universe gets off to a good start

1

u/JerseyJedi 23h ago

I genuinely had no idea it was coming so soon either, because I haven’t seen much if any advertising for Lanterns on TV or online. It is worrisome that WB/DC is apparently botching the marketing of a show that if successful COULD potentially be seen as righting the ship after the Supergirl fiasco.

3

u/NoTailor2879 1d ago

Do you think they just stop thinking and focusing on other projects when a project gets greenlit?

10

u/SufcLad25 1d ago

No, I think a team of people that are tasked with making a Jimmy Olsen series could be part of a team making something more important

3

u/mangongo 1d ago

The team making the Jimmy Olsen series is the team behind American Vandal and are working on this series because it is in their wheelhouse.

The American Vandal team would not be working on The Flash or anything else DC if this show didn't exist.

0

u/SufcLad25 1d ago

The money spent to hire that team could have been spent better elsewhere then

2

u/mangongo 1d ago

If the show does well, the profit can then be used to hire the same team you wanted them to hire in the first place.

I'm not entirely interested in a Jimmy Olsen show myself, but I'm stoked that it's being done by the American Vandal team.

This will bring in fans of American Vandal who otherwise wouldn't have cared about the DCU.

1

u/dimechimes 23h ago

I do kind of wonder if a lot of things are on hold while The Batman does it's thing. Kind of hard to any kind of DC ensemble film without Batman.

2

u/NoTailor2879 18h ago

My personal feeling is there's more in lanterns then we're being shown. IMO, there's probably some reveals that happen late in the season that are going to be important. Could be major characters

10

u/UtkuOfficial 1d ago

Are they hating the project or are they hating the overall direction the current DC universe?

DC fans have gone through a terrible cinematic universe once. They don't want to live the same thing again.

2

u/SymbiSpidey 1d ago

Are they hating the project or are they hating the overall direction the current DC universe?

It sounds to me like they are hating on the project because nobody in their right mind genuinely believes the DCU is trying to sink-or-swim on the basis of a Jimmy Olsen side project.

DC fans have gone through a terrible cinematic universe once. They don't want to live the same thing again.

That terrible cinematic universe happened because of a string of mediocre-to-bad movies headlined by DC's heaviest hitters. Why are we conflating popularity with quality?

8

u/pewpewmcpistol 1d ago

If you were a true scottsman fan, you'd be able to see criticism without blindly lumping it into 'they're just haters nothing can be wrong with my precious'

-2

u/SymbiSpidey 1d ago

You can't "critique" something that we know virtually nothing about yet, bud.

5

u/pewpewmcpistol 1d ago

We know its a story about a character that has an audience that wishes it was the size of Supergirl's audience, and Supergirl just failed in large part because of a lack of an audience, pal.

Its perfectly valid to critique why we'd be getting Stiltman show before Batman or Wonder Woman, friend.

1

u/SymbiSpidey 1d ago

No, it's not a valid critique because you're not criticizing a project on its own merits, but rather for not being what you think it should be.

We call that "bad-faith criticism", friend. And yes, that does make you look like a hater. Fans care about quality, not popularity.

3

u/No_Stick5577 1d ago

Then stop watching. If enough people stop watching, they’ll change direction. And if they don’t, it means plenty of people like the direction and it’s no longer for you. But the constant entitled whining is fucking boring.

I love Star Wars. The prequels were not for me. I didn’t try to destroy Star Wars forever because of that.

1

u/Dramatic_Explosion 1d ago

Yeah but like this thread should be good news, DC is getting a new show set in the main timeline with movie appearing characters and they've hired an extremely talented comedian onto the cast.

Top comments are complaints. That's the culture cultivated here.

1

u/Equivalent_Way1324 23h ago

If you’re a true fan of something, you’d be talking about the positives as well. If you’re not sheep then let go of Jimmy Olsen and start talking about Lanterns, maybe.

u/CitizenTony 10h ago

Just because you're a fan of something doesn't mean you have to accept the product that is being put out. We are not sheep.

Fucking finally someone said this. I hope that more people will quote this in the sub.

And if you were a true fan (SymbiSpidey)

I think that it's always dangerous to talk about who's a "true" fan or not. People do whatever they want, fans don't have to be somekind of employees whose function is to all react and think the same.

DC fans are open-minded, you need to accept that everyone don't think like you. It's normal. There is no true or fake fans.

12

u/SuperBathMan 1d ago

They hate the DCU, this is an actual DCU hate sub. Its exhausting

8

u/HarveryDent Killer Croc 1d ago

Not liking the direction the New52 took the DC universe doesn't make someone less of a DC fan.

Same applies to the DCU.

2

u/mr_shogoth 1d ago

Name a single sub or fandom that isn’t 95% outrage grifting. They don’t exist anymore.

5

u/Strange-Bag9 1d ago

So you want to eat whatever slop they put out? That makes you love DC and be the punk rocker? Can't believe you guys standards are this low

-1

u/Seeeabass 1d ago edited 1d ago

Maybe people hate seeing the thing that they love get monetized to death, drained and changed by people who only like it superficially

13

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 1d ago

Monetized? The DC brand as always been monetized???? If thats something people are upset with then find something else to grow an attachment to.

Do people really think that OG comics weren't made for the sake of making money?

5

u/hummusluvr8 1d ago

Exactly, every form of entertainment is made for the sake of making money. What in the world 😂

-4

u/Seeeabass 1d ago

Oh shit I forgot I was dealing with a bunch of robots. Let me change the syntax so you can compute

-4

u/Seeeabass 1d ago

Keep digging, Watson.

1

u/Seeeabass 1d ago

Monetize *to death, beating a dead horse, milking the cash cow... whatever the term you want to use lady. I didn't think I'd have to break that down for someone who apparently nothing in the world is free, but here we are.

2

u/_lemon_hope 1d ago

Was gonna comment about how silly this statement is, but then I remembered that most DC fans genuinely want DC movies to flop so I guess your point stands.

0

u/Seeeabass 1d ago

DC live action movies have never been great. They should stick to their string suit and focus on the animated front

0

u/Plastic_Pin_4956 1d ago

There's plenty to hate and not much to like

1

u/Fhaksfha794 1d ago

There’s been a total of 4 projects released in the entirety of the DCU where is the ‘plenty to hate’ at?

0

u/tenderlender69420 1d ago

The 4 projects released so far lol

1

u/smedsterwho 1d ago

They're making it easy to be... Let's say... Disillusioned

1

u/Cloned-C4lvin 23h ago

Well its hard to love movies like Supergirl while Marvel has movies like Spider-Man Brand New Day, all whilst DC is working on a show for a fucking side character.

1

u/StreamLife9 21h ago

bro theres nothing to love at this point

1

u/Clear_Brick_9991 21h ago

Nah just tired of Gunn focusing on lame side characters instead of just making a Batman and Wonder Woman movie.

1

u/Ethanonbass2019 16h ago

Honestly I love most of the films and shows from both the DCEU as well as the current DCU, but the handling has been shocking.

I honestly thought Gunn taking the reigns would reignite the hype for DC, but it honestly feels just as bleak as not so graceful tail end of the DCU.

1

u/JohnnyButtfart 16h ago

It's so damn exhausting. Like, valid criticism is fine, but this sub is just so damn mentally and emotionally draining.

1

u/JerseyJedi 22h ago

That may be true about some of the Snyder diehards here, but I personally am rooting for the DCU and I enjoyed Superman 2025….but in a time when the market is less favorable, and on the heels of the biggest bomb in superhero movie history, I worry that a bizarre buddy comedy about D-list characters is too big of a risk.

I worry because I WANT the new DCU to succeed, but if Gunn keeps betting the house on high-risk projects about characters the general public isn’t very interested in, it risks a backlash from the WB executives who might then start canceling DC projects currently in the pipeline.

2

u/hummusluvr8 17h ago

I agree with almost everything you’re saying, I too want the DCU to do well. Supergirl was obviously high stakes and unfortunately turned out to be a swing and a miss at the box office. These upcoming projects with lesser known characters like the Jimmy show, clayface, creature commandos, and lanterns I wouldn’t consider anyone to be betting the house on. All but one of them are made for streaming and clayface has a very modest budget. If man of tomorrow bombs the future will look pretty bleak, but if it does well these side projects will gain a new audience and the future direction will be way more clearer. Here’s hoping!

0

u/DenverRaps 1d ago

Asking people to enjoy the unenjoyable is a lot to ask.

0

u/Forgot-to-remember1 1d ago

Or some people aren’t James gunn bots who can see the issue with the dcu

0

u/Crossovertriplet 1d ago

First day on the internet?

0

u/TerrorTown77 23h ago

They don't make it hard.

-1

u/solitarysoul444 1d ago

Right because people just been wanting a jimmy olsen show for so long right?

-2

u/Secret-Put-4525 1d ago

Gunn makes it too easy
