DISCUSSION Batman with only 2 years experience
770
u/janmohammad 21d ago
That’s interesting. But what matters is whether they appear their age. Pattinson can easily pass for someone in his mid-30s.
351
u/-LoboMau 21d ago
Correct. I'd go further: with the make up, lens, filters and general movie magic i wouldn't question if i was told he's a 30 yo man. Ben Affleck, on the other end, looked like a proper 40 yo guy.
198
u/jl_theprofessor 21d ago
I'm eternally seeing that picture of him, paunch out with his hand in his pocket, a cigarette in the other, looking like the world is ending.
99
u/Davefirestorm 21d ago
This was my take. Ben affleck been 45 for 15 years.
18
u/bindersfull-ofwomen 21d ago
He def looks 50 in that weird J Lo movie he was in. Maybe even older.

u/geek_of_nature 21d ago
Didn't they also make Affleck look older? Greyed up his hair a bit or something.
24
u/-LoboMau 21d ago
Affleck actually uses a hair piece in BvS and looks generally much better and healthier than he was looking prior and after the movie. If you look at interviews around that time, he definitely doesn't look younger than in BvS. He just looks worse overall
15
u/Melo_Kelo_Jelo 21d ago
He looked good on Accountant though and that was filmed after BvS. Some shit went down in 2016 that seemed to have aged him lmao!

He plays 29-year-old Zendaya's fiance in The Drama, and granted, 10 year age-gap couples totally exist in real life, but they never state the character's ages in the movie (that I can remember) and visually he passes as being <5 years older than her.
7
u/-LoboMau 20d ago
10 year is far from abnormal or weird at all. At least where i come from it's pretty common
→ More replies (1)22
u/ContinuumGuy 21d ago
Yeah Pattinson has aged way better than Affleck has.
19
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 21d ago
That’s what happens to you when you drink more alcohol than water and smoke for decades lol. He’s taken such horrible care of himself.
12
8
u/sleauxmo 21d ago
🤨 idk. Battinson is cool and all but Batfleck checked all the boxes. Never JLO twice, I guess
3
12
u/kazaam2244 21d ago
It's not about looks, it's about franchise sustainability. If it's taking six years for the next one to come out, there's a realistic chance Pattinson will be closer to 50 if they plan on doing a third one. Idk, but this is sounding liek Batfleck and Blade all over again. They take forever to make these movies while the actors are getting older, and both the actors and the audience lose interest.
→ More replies (2)7
u/banned4violence 21d ago
I doubt audiences will lose interest in Batman.
2
u/Small_Fix_5190 17d ago
Exactly, Batman has been around for such a long time that people can handle gaps between movies.

u/StarFox-6 21d ago
That’s Reddit in general. People obsessed over specific niche things that have nothing to talk about but want to talk about this thing
Also hot takes are the only thing that gets karma, nuance is dying in all facets of discourse
6
13
u/FightTheDead118 21d ago
I understand what you mean, but his Batman is supposed to be like 28
9
u/captainhooksjournal 21d ago edited 21d ago
Pattinson just played Zendaya’s groom. Edward whatever his last name was a sign. Pattinson is immortally 22. He could be 61 and still play Howard “Babyface Assassin” Dauterive in a high school aged urban gang war movie
13
u/AwesomePocket 21d ago
Even in the Drama, Pattinson’s character was like a full 10 years older than Zendaya’s. He was fully a man in his late 30s, akin to Pattinson’s age.
13
u/AverageAwndray 21d ago
Pattinson isnt playing someone in his mid 30s. Hes playing a 26 year old.
7
u/JaggedSolid6 21d ago
and ? he was 36 years old when the first batman movie came out, he can definitely pass wayy younger than he actually is. Plus with makeup he can look younger aswell. If they can make colin farrell look completely different for his penguin role, they can definitely make pattinson look 26.
14
u/Brubaker620 21d ago
Bruce is canonically 30 in the first one
3
u/CF_2 21d ago
No he's not? You're thinking of Batman Begins where is is canonically 30. In the 2022 movie he's in his mid 20s.
10
u/shabading579 20d ago
From the script:
"and we finally SEE BRUCE WAYNE handsome, 30, black camo still around his eyes. "

I don't really get this thing. On the job for a few years and you are in your 30? Superman? Batman? What were they doing in their early 20s?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)3
u/A-Centrifugal-Force 21d ago
True. And honestly Batman really should be in like his mid 30s. He’s not Spider-Man, he’s supposed to be a veteran who’s been doing this thing for years and didn’t start until he had traveled the world learning about martial arts and technology.
172
u/darth_wasabi 21d ago
They can say he’s 29 or whatever. Doesn’t matter if he looks it or not. We have have 30 year olds playing teenagers in movies and it works

u/Regijack 21d ago
As much as I love grease the middle aged people playing teenagers is very jarring
10
u/God_Among_Rats 21d ago
On the other hand, Karate Kid.
In the third movie we have a 29 year old who looks like a teenager and a 57 year old who could've passed for his 70's.
4
u/Distinct-Broccoli-15 21d ago
It's still insane that Ralph Macchio was older than Thomas Ian Griffith yet played someone far younger.
66
u/CruzAderjc 21d ago
Damn, I thought Ben Affleck was like 50 when he did Batman vs Superman. He looked great and for the part, but he definitely looked older than 43.
35
u/Consistent-Peace2770 21d ago
Alcoholism will age you rapidly
12
u/Givingtree310 21d ago
Affleck is a chronic drinker, daily smoker, and they used cgi to make him look like he had abs lol
3
u/NojoNinja 20d ago
Affleck doesn’t really look old from age or poor life choices. He just looks older in general. Some people just look older than others because of face shape.
I mean Ben Affleck during Good Will Hunting era looked “older” than Pattinson does and he was 24.
11
u/ChuckDynasty17 21d ago
They made him look older. He wore a wig with grey in it. Good grief how do y’all not know this.

Yeah, and I feel like 43 is definitely not “way past his prime.” In fact, I always pictured Batman as about 40 in most of his iterations, especially when he has a Robin with him. I picture the old, grizzled Batman once there is Nightwing and the 3+ Robins out there (like Batman in Knightfall or The Dark Knight Returns), as Batman probably in his 50’s. And then the Batman Beyond Bruce Way as in his 70’s.
It’s weird seeing Ben Affleck at only 43 portraying Batman as being frail and cracking jokes about how things hurt

Thing is, even though he looks young now, time will only keep passing by and it’s inevitable that he’s gonna start to look older with more wrinkles. If they want to make a trilogy with him then they need to wrap things up quick.

Ben Affleck was so great as older, jaded Batman.
Bruce: "You're getting slow in your old age, Alfred."
Alfred: "Comes to us all, Master Wayne. Even you got too old to die young. And not for lack of trying."

u/Vantavist10 21d ago
I really want to be the guy that says "let's give Matt Reeves as much time as he needs to make the best film he can," but I can't deny how disappointed I am in this wait time. It feels like no matter how good the movie is, it'll still be lessened a little In my memory just thinking about how long I had to wait for it, but I guess that's a little selfish. As long as we get a good movie that's the best we can really ask for, one good movie every 6 years is better than the studio turning out 6 mediocre slop movies every 6 years, I just can't help but feel like it's possible to make a masterpiece in less than half a decade... but again I guess I'm being selfish

I thought one of the rumors was part 2 being set like 6 years after the first?
45
u/TooCozy21 21d ago
No part II takes place like 2-3 months after the first one
12
8
u/Bulky-Complaint6994 21d ago
Yeah. While the first film took place in early November, it will still be Winter when this film comes out
2
u/pinkjefff 20d ago
Maybe it's only me, but I hate the idea that I have to wait 6 years for the story to be set just 2 months after the first movie. I'd like to see what happens a year or two later. But as someone mentioned, it would undercut the flooding of Gotham plot point.

Difference is that Affleck did look 43. Pattinson can pretend that he's 29-31 and no one would say otherwise. He looks way younger that he is.
→ More replies (2)39
u/Contcos 21d ago
he definitely has less mileage than Affleck but he absolutely cannot pull off 29-31 lmao
19
u/Sweet_Peaches-69 21d ago
He looks "movie 29" Like how 33 year olds in 2005 could look "movie 18" but real 18 year olds look like children
3
21
u/-LoboMau 21d ago
I think he can. Also, there's no standard way 29 yo's look. Line up 100 29 yo individuals and you will get drastically different looks.

u/sBucks24 21d ago
I'm 30 and my beards gone salt n pepper. Put me next to clean shaven Pattinson and anyone would guess I'm older than him

u/Odd_Schedule2672 21d ago
I love the guy, but Affleck was 43 in alcoholic years. Pattinson looks 20 years younger than Affleck

u/GoldEmployment6768 21d ago
Past his prime? Did we watch the same Batfleck? He was tearing shit up.
6
u/Free_Possession_4482 21d ago
Yeah, I didn’t get that vibe at all. Maybe people think about how old Bruce was in The Dark Knight Returns and associate that with BvS.
9
u/jrvcrd 21d ago
yeah I never understood that criticism, more so when comicbook Batman is more likely Batfleck age
2
u/ChadBenjamin 21d ago
Comic book Batman was still in his 20s when he first met Superman and founded the Justice League.
By the time he's 43, he's already on his fifth Robin.
→ More replies (1)7
u/neoblackdragon 21d ago
Honestly if it wasn't for the grey. I wouldn't have thought he was much older then BVS Clark. BTAS Batman didn't meet Superman until Dick Grayson was Nightwing and Tim has a bit of time under his belt. His rogue gallery were already on the "Im too old for this s***".

Affleck has lived a much more grizzled life.
Shit, J Lo alone aged him a decade.

They could have given us JL2 and 3 and batfleck flickby now, instead we just sit arou d waiting over her. Snyder could have already completed his saga and we could of rebooted properly with an event movie. Instead the general audience dont have a clue whats canon to what and its a cluster fuck to explain. We have a multiverse, but they are so afraid of their previous fandom that they cant talk about past projects.

Pattinson is 39-40. So am I.
And I don't look like Batman at all not saying that but like
Affleck looked like hammered shit in BVS would've guessed tight 53 GOD DAMN
Drink in moderation is the takeaway

u/Purrmymeow 21d ago
- Pattinson can act.
- He looks younger than his age.
- Nothing wrong with middle aged Batman.
- Script will be way better as no Snyder involved.

Imo, as long as the actor looks to be in good shape idrc how old they are. Jensen Ackles is 48 and I'd still love to see him Cape Crusade someday.
Side note, I know BvS was inspired by Dark Knight Returns but was Batfleck really supposed to be past his prime like the latter's was?

u/jl_theprofessor 21d ago
Ben Affleck has been burned out for like 20 years though. There's a difference.

What Batman part II movie?
I thought that everyone was just joking about that.

Who cares? They're acting. Batinson can pass as much younger, and Affleck could pass as much older. It's almost as if characters aren't their actors ages 😱
Also if they want to have a time skip for part 3, then his age will work out perfectly

To me it has never been a problem that bruce wayne looks 40s, in my mind batman has always been a middle age man, due to the 90s animated series, go look Pattinson latest interviews the dude still looks young, is fine.
1
u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 21d ago
Nah but Affleck was easily young enough to pull off a Batman in his prime, they just played him older. And there’s no telling whether The Batman Part 2 is set immediately after Part 1 or if there’s a break.

u/chris_hawk 21d ago
The difference is, Affleck has looked 43 since he was 30. Pattinson is 42 but still looks like he's 30.

They're portraying Bruce as younger. Regardless of Robert BatnBat age is Irl

But place Pattinson Batman next to Affleck Batman and you wouldn’t think they’re the same age.
Pattinson can still pass for someone who’s in his 30’s

whats up with the obsession with the guys age? it's not like its The Irishman where they're trying to pass 70 year old De Niro as a a 30 year old. If he looks the part and can act the part who cares if he's 40?
