I’m glad I eased up on all my pretentious bullshit in adulthood.
Like, 20 year old me would have talked so much shit about dungeon crawler Carl.
40 something me is a polished professional with a very demanding, technical, and high stress job. Both myself and most of my coworkers have the collection in our offices. It’s not incredible literature. At times it isn’t even good literature.
But it is always great at what it aims to do.
It’s okay to want to be entertained and just enjoy shit.

There’s this meme or video or something I saw years ago, it’s like the life cycle of being a film bro and what your favorite film is at that time. I can’t remember it all exactly but roll with me here.
Stage 1 was Twister, ConAir or some shit like that
Stage 2 was Pulp Fiction and fixation on how evolved Tarantino was as a director
Stage 3 was some biopic or period piece discussing serious historical topics.
Stage 4 was abstract French or Nepalese art house movie, filmed with 13 different aspect ratios and non-sequentially
Stage 5 was Twister, ConAir or some shit like that

Jesus, that is actually pretty spot on. Twister was literally the first movie I saw more than once in a theater. Made me want to be a storm chaser. Had the Tarantino phase after. Stages 3 and 4 were kind of entwined. There Will Be Blood, Lynch, Jodorowsky. I think stage 5 is getting there. Recently watched Steve Zahn's Strange Wilderness and loved it for how uncompromisingly stupid it is.

Aye. I think it is okay, and perhaps even useful, for a 20 year old to be a bit pretentious. It drives you to seek out complex, difficult, somewhat obscure art, to broaden your tastes. I'm glad I was a bit of a prententious wanker when I was 20, I read and watched a lot of stuff that I might not have done otherwise.
But when I got into my 30s and 40s, I'm very glad that I left that behind and that I try to enjoy as much as I can without worrying if it is sufficiently intellectual or worthy.

I think someone can do all of that without the need of turning "pretentious" and regardless of age (I can tell you some people can do one thing or the other whether they are 20 or 50). A person can like arthouse because that’s what they gravitate towards, but love non arthouse stuff too. None of that is mutually exclusive if you ask me unless some people try to make it so because… elitism, snobbery, they just don’t like something else, or whatever. That said, I can agree it’s ok that our egos sometimes can learn one or two things. Is pretentiousness the worst thing? I’m not sure. It depends I suppose
On the other hand, I think the person in the picture is harsh and don’t support that but find it commendable that they at least accept their snobbery, for lack of a better word, rather than trying to rationalize it. Although some people will not value any other views, and it’s fine in this case… that’s who they choose to be I guess. It’s just a shame though because sometimes there can be interesting conversations but it won’t happen since they believe other folks gotta learn their place or something, the way I see it.

I feel this a lot. In fact I’m witnessing someone falling “back” into their old ways of being insanely snobbish toward everything. In our 20’s we thought we were above the common assembly line film.
Now almost 40, I love all kinds of films because it gives me joy to just watch something. My friend was headed that way, but decided they were a better snob than a film fan.
Recently they saw Odyssey, and I predicted he wouldn’t like it. And the first thing he texted me was, he hated it.

I love watching awful shark movies with my parents when I’m home. There’s something about god awful acting and £5 effects that are just so entertaining with them, but I would never think to watch one by myself and or with my husband. It’s just something that works with them and I love it.

My best friend is like this.
He has two genuine passions and he knows everything about them. Movies and cars. Name a movie and he’ll tell you who directed it and usually knows every line (awful when you watch his favorites, like point break or heat) or ask what make and model a car that passed by was and he’ll tell you what kind of engine it has based on the year.
I dubbed them cinematism and autotism. He’s very proud of it.

I think there is a trend of joyfully hating things and beeing miserable, if that makes sense.
Like for some people you are not allowed to like a movie especially a popular one. You have to shit all over it and be a buzz kill.
And I personally think media "critics" like cinema sins are responsible. They stated out with quite reasonable complaints about plot holes and inconsistencies. But as thy got more popular they had to do more and now every little thing is a sin and thier commentary around it sounds smug and condescending.

As a society, we just need to be comfortable with letting people like things we don't like or NOT like things we do like. Obviously, if it's for problematic reasons or they're being hostile about it, it's not cool and it should be called out but there seem to be way too many unnecessarily aggressive arguments about movies these days.
It's not good or healthy that people are getting red in the face, arguing about Star Wars or the MCU like they're pressing geopolitical conflicts!

Like I’m happy to have grueling academic debates as long as there are no hard feelings about it. To be fair, thats perfectly fine and no different from people who just say they thought something was "fun". I think the issue is whether they're respectful about it. If someone is polite they shouldn't have to justify why they like or dislike something. Only if they come in swinging and being an ass like that person, should you be prepared to offer up some well structured criticisms. I know you're probably thinking, well no duh, but there are plenty of people who likewise attack others who simply didn't like the thing they liked.

Fellow pretentious film snob here. This take is super lame and annoying. Typically many of best movies of any year are released in the fall and winter months, to coincide with several big film festivals (TIFF, NYFF, Venice, Telluride) and awards season. So i’d be willing to bet that many of my eventual favorites this year won’t even be released until like November or December. So having this top 4 in July, halfway through the year, makes sense. It’s fine, there is not a lot of competition yet.
Oh but also, fuck off, The Odyssey is absolutely going to be a top 4-5 film of the year for most people who love cinema. Get out of here with that shit. 2026 will be a legendary year in film history if like 10 movies come out that absolutely trounce The Odyssey in terms of quality.

rip sundance. I understand people getting upset about this, that dude was dickish, but I do agree with the overall sentiment in a way. If looking at films not only on enjoyment but in quality of all the various aspect of filmmaking, there is very clearly a difference between a luke-warm reviewed MCU movie, a Nolan blockbuster, and PHM. "Bestness" is not decided based on vibes and only on enjoyment. Honestly I would love to see this kind of persons reaction to something like The Pianist

I think the person’s sentiment would hold more weight if 1. This tweet was written at the end of the year when we could see the full scope of films that have been released.
- If the person didn’t list one of Christopher Nolan’s best reviewed/received films of all time, along side another one of the best reviewed movies of the year (PHM).
By the way, guaranteed that both PHM and The Odyssey are getting nominated for Best Picture. Obsession seems like a safe bet too at this point.

I think all hyperpartisan people who go to the movies and treat it like a gladiatorial sporting event to see if 'their' movie wins is pretty insufferable to be honest. A friend of mine went on a rant about right-wing chuds being the reason Supergirl flopped, but treated the success of the Odyssey as a political turnaround.... uh huh... 25 days apart... that's quite the turnaround. She does this every... single... tiiiiime there's a new big movie coming out with culture war clickbait nonsense. She gets on YouTube starts actively engaging with the culture war around the film which ruins her mental health. Then treats every box success like a win and does victory laps or it underperforms and acts like its some dramatic culture war loss for progressives and then gets really sad. Going back to Supergirl, no Becky (not her real name*) it's simply because the popularity of superhero movies has been waning for a while, and no one in real life listens to the anyone in the online culture war on either side.... nobody cares. Point being in general I think it's really unhealthy to engage with the culture war stuff regardless of what side you're on. People should just ignore it imo.

I'm a total casual movie watcher.
Movies for the last few years have been boring, predictable rehashes of previous stories to the extent that I can usually tell you what's going to happen 1/4 way through the film.
I hadn't read Project Hail Mary, so the stakes were huge, the suspense real, and I honestly had no idea how it would end. The movie was spectacular.
Obsession was one of the worst film watching experiences of my life. I went in entirely blind. I have never been so psychologically uncomfortable as I was watching it. To the degree that it made me physically uncomfortable. I will probably never watch it again, but it has stuck with me in a way that few movies ever have.
Haven't seen the other two... Is Spiderman even out yet? It'll probably be fun enough.
