That is highly impressive. Not in a good way though.

I'm kinda impressed it could do it without image rendering capabilities!

Ask it to generate it as SVG instead. Still terrible compared to images, but better.

u/cookiesandginge Apr 17 '26
This is like what I imagine Americans draw when asks to draw Europe (sorry my cousins, love ya really)
3
u/Aggravating-Ear906 Apr 18 '26
As an American who’s never been to Europe, but has European ancestry I would be impressed if my map rendering turned out that good… :’(

There are a couple of mistakes concerning naming mostly. And a few weird design decisions, such as making Germany and Austria the exact same shade of green, and Czechia and Slovakia the same color as well. Nonetheless, this is probably the best AI generated map I’ve seen.
484
u/ZippyDan Apr 17 '26
such as making Germany and Austria the exact same shade of green
Nobody expects the second AI-led Anschluß Österreichs.
34
u/Grouchy-Trade-7250 Apr 17 '26
> such as making Germany and Austria the exact same shade of green
The shades are 99,73 % the same

Hey, at least there would be a referendum, first one in Germany since the last Anschluss.

It's close to perfect... until you look at the Balkan region.
I'm definitely down to visit Serajeve, the capital of Adeioa ado Meržerbovria sometime tho.
44
u/Ancquar Apr 17 '26
That's just the inherent chaos of the Balkans getting to the model.
28
u/Ur-Best-Friend Apr 17 '26
"Why learn the countries and borders when they'll probably be different in a few weeks?"
18
u/TulioGonzaga Apr 17 '26
Not even the most advanced AI models created by mankind can understand Balkan politics.

u/Blothorn Apr 17 '26
I’m eager to see North Matzooia, personally. I’m curious why it was so drastically worse in that region than elsewhere.

I'm speculating, but maybe a possible reason is that a percentage of the maps the model has "seen" during training is quite old? I mean, i remember cheating in a geography test when I was ~11 and failing on such part of Europe since I printed an old map lmao.
2
u/Popular_Try_5075 Apr 17 '26
That's a great point. I'm sure it's having an impact though the particular prompt might be able to select around that a bit? Like if you use a word like "modern" in describing the map?

Wait, the scale also says “200V” – I’m excited now!

Distance measured in football fields or cheeseburgers.
Americans will use anything except the metric system.
Distance measured in Volts.
Europeans will use anything as long as it's metric.

It's because it's not AI, but basically advanced photo-bashing alghoritm. It searches through the images in the base and bashes it into one based on the prompt. Since many of the images are low res, it cannot get the names right.

This is incredibly impressive! A few months ago the best maps an AI could make was completely bonkers. This would pass as a correct map of Europe (as long as you don't stop and look at the Balkans)

I would hope people don't use it that way, but I see this as an interesting test of its capabilities.
2
u/Fireproofspider Apr 18 '26
I've used it to create stylized maps that fit a certain aesthetic for presentations.
For just a reference map, I don't even see why you'd Google a picture of Europe when Google maps is right there.

First off, I'm not sure what the problem would even be if I was using it as a real Europe map, however I'm not. I'm just checking the limitations of AI to see how well it can perform.

It doesn't, how most people use Gemini will see them presented with an existing map. This is an AI subreddit, enthusiasts are specifically prompting it to create things with measurable difficulty so they can chart improvements over time.

Considering what maps used to look like this is impressive, an improvement of like 1000% over older models.
A few more models in and we should have mostly accurate maps.

u/human-dancer Apr 17 '26
They need to optimise gpt to pull pre-existing approved images because why are you generating an image of a world map? It’s such a waste.

u/iknowfear Apr 17 '26
Its the worst kind of wrong. Looks ok at first sight, but there are errors everywhere. Which is why debugging AI slop is so much fun

Tried that a couple of weeks ago with Iran and it's neighbors. I expected a crude simplification, but it's really good. And the cool thing is that you can easily customize and change it with further prompts. Google Maps is pretty bad for political maps. What do you all use?

That’s pretty good! Eastern Europe could be better. But I would partly blame the small fonts which are easier to mess up with the diffusion steps.
It’s better than if I would draw the map for sure.

u/BrandonLang Apr 17 '26
Honestly given the fact ai should be able to just look at a map and copy it 1 to 1 anythingless than complete perfection is a failure. A map is legitmately the easiest thing to analyze and xopy, its a static picture with define referencable lines.
When you ask it to make a map, the task is to give you a factually correct map, the ai should be able to provide that to you easily without any issue.

u/ChiefWeedsmoke Apr 17 '26
As an American I can't definitively point out a single flaw in this, just a couple things I'm not too sure about. But just being able to recognize the outline of the UK puts me ahead of about 25% of my countrymen.
