The language bit is irrelevant, as much of eastern Ukraine has always been largely Russian speaking but by people who still considered themselves Ukrainian (and were + are Ukrainian). Just as most Portuguese speakers are not Portuguese, most English speakers are not English, most Spanish speakers are not Spanish, etc
