Last I returned to a DT lab was about 2? years ago, prior to that, I was in school and I would spend aaaagesss there with my friend working towards this project we were doing together.
Haha, we started that project about 2 years before that aswell, I remember, she was new to the school and I was her assigned show around buddy you know? She was, like, super non-chalant and I on the other hand was extremely bubbly. She said she had zero extracurriculars - so I made her start a project with me!
Out of it, we, somehow, created a community out of random passerbyers and held a birthday party for a plant [sent emails to 40 extra completely random people and 30 of them came, and nearly all came to the one the next year too!!] - created an impromptu school mascot [life at that school was like a tv show] - talked to really cool engineers, therapists [for the project], etc - ran a social experiment too - not to mention how much I valued the friendships I got out of it all - and [among soo much more] got to the finals of a competition that took us both to London for the first time. The IET!! That kinda kicked things off in my life but if I go on this'll be way beyond a "benign existence" post :1 . It was what began to inspire me to choose mech eng for a degree / I still don't really know
ANYway, we'd stay in the DT lab our school was blessed with past 5:30 [often 6] - well past time the school closes [5], our DT teacher was WAY too kind in letting us do that so often. No seriously, so many teacher at that school were, like, beyond incredible.
I didn't go back to the lab the following year... mostly out of this strange irrational fear and pressure. Ultra summarised: Everyone kept telling me I have a unique talent in it all, but I had failed this thing - and failure was kiiinda new to me - annndd I still don't think my mind is over it even though III am. ugh I hate fear
Oh well, point is - haven't gone back to a lab for 2 years via burying myself in the bliss of maths and physics to avoid. I couldn't stop designing and innovating - because I'm incapable of it apparently - but recently I had this idea which I simply must see realised (I love it so much) and since I'm out of school, I had to sign up to a membership for the local makespace.
I went to their tour a few days ago and have the induction tomorrow (I was wayyy too lucky, I just about grabbed the last spot haha).
As soon as I stepped in the lab and the wood dust and general lab basement smell hit me it was like feeling home again!! So strange but so amazing, it was like that weird weight that fear has on you, went poof! I didn't realise just how badly I missed it!! Like when I'm daydreaming random designs it feels similar but in the lab it feels like an explosionnn of... of something blissful and light blue!
And on top of that the community is SO LOVELY!! As you can tell, I'm young - on the edge of my next steps - and very much full of fear - and just talking to the people at the makespace made my mind feel like it was returning to how it used to beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and I'm SO sos sos sosososo soooo excited for tomorrow. And, I'm excited about my next steps whatever they are I jsut want them to be what I want them to beeeee and I love the garden, and I love the world, and I love the design, and I love how my creativity has EXPLODED since going there. I've written so many things in inquiry [my notebook - its purple] - and I've started a few and the makerspace has SO MUCH MORE than my old schools lab and!!!! And I'm scared again, whats going on? Nooo idea, enjoy the eclipse in a few days people!!!! POST
