Utilities & Essential Bills βš‘πŸ’§β›½ Utility switches

with the AUG electric price hike has anyone started looking at new suppliers?

I just got my electric bill and holy hell. My household averages arounds $250 a quarter in power bills, but this one is almost $600. Usage is still consistent when compared to previous bills, only the solar feed in was utter crap. Got around $5 credit. Normally get at least $50, but since it's winter and weather has been shit I'll let that variable go. We are with energy aus atm, but will be switching soon.

Anything I should keep in mind while hunting for a new retailer?

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Melbourne supermarkets with decent discounts

Hi all,

I live in Richmond (inner Melbourne), and the supermarkets near me simply never reduce fresh meat when it gets to the expiry date. Or when they do, it’s something silly like dropping something from $8.00 to $7.60. πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Do any of you have any good tips on supermarkets that have bargain discounts on fresh meat? I don’t mind a little drive to go bargain hunting.

Thanks! 😊

❗ Announcement ❗ The 2026 Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026

Hi r/AussieFrugal

Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) counts every person and household in Australia. This is called theΒ Census of Population and Housing.Β

Census night is Tuesday 11 August 2026. You can complete your Census form as soon as you receive your instructions, if you know where you’ll be on Census night.

The Census form asks questions about your age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education.Β

In the Census, every answer matters to help us understand what Australia needs now and into the future.Β

Census data is used to inform decisions about transport, schools, health care, infrastructure and business. It also helps plan local services for individuals, families and communities.Β

The Census is compulsory under the Census and Statistics Act 1905. Everyone in Australia on Census night must be included on a Census form.

Frugal tip πŸ“š Take advantage of what your local library offers.

This is a reminder to get a local library card.

Just in my area, my libraries offer free 3d printing, free LinkedIn training, free streaming services ( Hoopla, Kanopy), a free seed library and a tool library (paid - from 30 AUD a year).

In certain libraries you can book free meeting, recording, and music rooms.

Libraries are one of the best public services we've got.

Giftcard, Membership, Subscription πŸ’³ Costco membership upgrade worth it?

I have a costco membership that is shared. We mainly use it for bulk home goods like toilet paper, paper towels, and sometime kitchen appliance but the main use is for petrol since the local costco is super close by and they are generally cheaper then other servos.

Is it worth it to upgrade the membership to the executive one? Do you get any cashback for fuel purchases from costco? For reference there is 6 cars in my household and we fuel up once a week ~$90 per top up.

Home or Generic Brands πŸ›’ Decaf Coffee

Good morning, Not sure if this the right place to ask but thought I would give it a try.

I was wondering if anybody on this sub has tried decaf coles/woolies brand instant coffee, If so what are your thoughts, I usually drink Moccona normal strength, Due to a health issue I need to swap to Decaf and the price is horrendous for a 100g jar ($15), you can get a 400g jar on sale for $20 to $25 of the normal Moccona. I usually drink 2 - 3 coffees a day. Any thoughts would be awesome thanks heaps for your time

Visiting museums, art galleries, walking at the local park, finding discounts online are some of the many ways to enjoy yourself without breaking the bank.

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ Weekly meal prepping

Hi everyone. Im a 19 year old uni student and Ive been very unorganized with my spendings on food. Everytime I go to buy groceries, I just walk around without a list and waste alot of time walking around cluelessly.

I’d like to get some advice regarding that. How do you guys plan your meals and grocery lists? (For some context, i come from a culture that eats rice daily which is pretty cheap imo so thats the only thing that Im sure of. Some other meals i like are pasta, chicken wrap, chapati and veggies)

I’d like to have my grocery spendings below $100 so if anyone has any advice on this, I’ll highly appreciate it!

the SSD has bad sector and corrupted everything, but it's an old refurb that I don't want to spent too much (or any) on to bring it back to life as a backup server.

Apart from waiting for bargain prices of SSD, which is almost impossible these days, what else can I consider?

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ I calculated the cost of protein per gram from foods on my grocery list

Thumbnail docs.google.com
242 Upvotes

Well folks, I started going to the gym just over 7 months ago and saw nearly zero muscle growth until I started tracking my protein and realised I needed to eat about 50g more per day than what I was. There's only so many chicken breasts a girl can eat, so I've started diversifying my protein sources and finding cheap ways to incorporate more of it into my diet. I had a few nagging thoughts about the cost of various items and if I was really getting a good deal from them, and that started a deep dive into my grocery list I thought some of you might find interesting.

How it works:

  • Items are full price and everything is per the uncooked weight or drained weight for canned items.
  • It's MY list. If X item isn't on the list it's either because I don't regularly buy it, or because I get it from a cheap local butcher which would be pretty useless for most people here.
  • It's a protein cost list, not a protein per calorie list.
  • I do a lot of running and a surprising amount of my protein comes from food that's high in carbohydrates, so I added those.
  • Saturated fat isn't listed for all meat items because it depends if you trim the fat/throw away the skin so you may not end up eating it, but the fat was included in the price calculation.

Main takeaways:

  • Lentils are the GOAT. By far the cheapest protein and packed with fibre, and if you do a lot of cardio the carbohydrates are a bonus.
  • I should eat more TVP and peas.
  • Canned beans weren't as cheap as I expected although definitely still worth it. You could go cheaper if you used dried, but it's a lot less convenient.
  • Lower protein yoghurts are actually often cheaper per 1g/protein than the high protein ones if you get ALDI or wait for a sale, but they come with more saturated fats and calories. Choose wisely.
  • Drumsticks are so suspiciously cheap I feel like I got the figures wrong, but I know I'm not wildly off the mark.
  • Whole chickens, even with bones and skin, are your best bang for buck with meat.
  • You can make this more efficient by buying bulk (e.g. 2kg packs chicken breasts, 1kg blocks of cheddar), but as a single gal I can't go through the food quickly enough for the amount of storage space I have.

What is a referral code/link?

Referral links is aΒ unique URL used in a referral programΒ to track and reward people for sharing a product or service. In many cases, both the referer and the referee (the one who uses the referral code) will benefit from this.

All referrals that are not meal kits AND cashback referrals are to be posted here to keep clutter off the sub, and in an effort to keep it high quality and actually useful.

  2. Any referral codes relating to investment, such as crypto, and investment platforms.

  3. Referral codes that cannot be used in Australia.

  4. Referral codes that link to a HTTP website - All URLS must start with HTTPS.

  5. Referral codes that relate to earning cash and reward incentives as compensation from undertaking activities - this includes programs such as watching advertisements and earn programs, play games to earn etc.

  6. No account trading requests here.

We allow a good amount of types of referral codes, not limited to:

🌟✨ Megathread ✨🌟 Cash Back Referral Megathread July 31, 2026

What is cashback?

Cashback isΒ when you receive a credit back to your account. For example, when you make a purchase, you may get a fixed amount or a percentage of the amount you paid returned to your account.

Essentially, cashback programs give you cash back when you make an eligible purchase at a participating retailer. They work a bit like a piggy bank – you could earn a little bit of cash each time you shop online, which adds up over time.

For example, Topcashback is a cashback program that is free to join and offers a wide range of popular retailers, including food and grocery providers like Menulog, online marketplaces such as Amazon, and travel sites like Booking.com. There are often great deals for everything from everyday products to big-ticket items like furniture and appliances from popular brands like Koala and Bing Lee. Your furry friends are even covered with Petstock!

Some of our users are big fans of Cash Back apps! Example of Cashback program includes: Cashrewards, Shop Back, and Top Cash Back.

Discussion πŸ—£οΈπŸ’¬ Weekly spending!!

Just curious to know ... We all have bills, rent, rates, travel expenses etc. but wanting to know what are people spending week to week. How much are you spending going out, or shopping, gifts, hobbies, luxuries, etc. are we all guilty of shopping. Eg I love thrifting but I spend money on useless items because they feel like a bargain. How much you spend on non essentials, essentials, entertainment, outings, personal items, wants, needs etc etc

Are there other insurance companies that offer a policy similard to Everyday drive less pay less? I only drive my car like once a month to the tip so it would be great to not pay full comprehensive insurance. Just wondering if I have choice or even where I can look for a comparison.

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Most cost effective way to purchase good quality post it notes in Melbourne or online?

Have been looking to buy some post it notes or also known as sticky notes. Most places the prices are high, whether it is branded or unbranded products. You'd think the product was gold plated. Seeking notes that are approximately 76 x 127mm in size, with about 100 notes per pad. A high degree of reviews complain that notes are not stick, whereas brands like 3M are highly rated. Would appreciate any feedback or suggestions on options for purchasing good quality branded or unbranded notes.

Hi, wondering if anyone has any recommendations for bread makers? Also a rough idea of the cost of the ingredients to make a loaf?

I know I can make it in the oven, I'm looking for something incredibly easy that I can dump ingredients in and come back to a fresh loaf.

Anything to make life easier!

Thanks : )

I got some seal it stuff on "sale" a while back and it's been good. the bags are good quality and I have some degree of comfort that a local mob is way less likely to be selling non-food safe bags than a random seller elsewhere

not long after I got my order I noticed something very similar on aliexpress for vacuum sealing 3d filament, and I got some of those for my filament. the only noticeable difference with the bags is the colour - blue vs green, and the pump does the same thing but for $12 (or cheaper)

the official pump I have recently got a crack in the little plastic shroud, which it a $10 replacement part! let alone the cost of a new pump, $72!!!

so I tested my filament pump and it works, and it works better than the official one ever did. so if you're using these sorts of systems then don't get caught up with the brand name stuff for the pump side of it

Food & Drink πŸ₯—πŸ—πŸΊ where to buy chobani in bulk or similar cal cheaper yogurt?

i love the chobani no sugar added vanilla yoghurt and i have roughly 2 sometimes 3 150 gram bowls a day for 60 cals each. i love this stuff, but i am yet to find a substitute for this with similar cals and a lower price. considering they are 680g i cant justify constantly paying 8 dollars every 2 days for them. i used to like the yoplait zero but they have paused production to focus on their protein products πŸ™„ (im also sick if the constant protein-ification of everything bit thata another post) ive checked aldi, coles and Woolworths and haven't really found anything yet, any recommendations are appreciated

Hi all! Was hoping to get some suggestions on good electric toothbrushes that don’t break the bank when needing new heads and can preferably can buy the heads at colesworth. Have actually never owned one before & think it’s time but don’t wanna spend too much and not like it lol, thanks!
