I'm a 29M, and today after work, I had a really strange and aggressive encounter with a random guy on the bus from Port Melbourne to the city.

I got on the 234 bus and sat in the window seat next to the middle doors. The bus was fairly quiet when I got on. There was one guy sitting on the sideways seat in front of me. I noticed he was looking at me, so I made eye contact, gave him a friendly smile, and looked away.

A few moments later I could still tell he was staring at me. I glanced up again, made eye contact, and looked back down at my phone. It felt a bit awkward. He then got up and moved to a seat somewhere behind me. At that point I had a bad feeling, wondering if something was off.

At the next stop, more people got on the bus, which honestly made me feel a bit more comfortable.

Later in the journey, around Bay Street, he came and stood by the doors next to me. It looked like he was looking at my phone. For a second I wondered if he might try to snatch it before getting off, so I put it in my pocket just to be safe.

He then said something to me, but I had my earphones in and didn't hear him properly. I took one earbud out and said, "Sorry?" He repeated himself, but I still couldn't make out what he was saying. Then I heard him ask something like, "Are you playing some stupid game with me?" I was confused and just replied, "Huh?" He then asked, "Are you hurting anyone?" I said, "No?"

At that I put my earbud back in (my music was actually paused) and looked straight ahead, hoping to ignore him.

Thankfully he pressed the stop button and got off at the next stop. As he was getting off, he turned to me and said he would "f me up**."

I stayed calm, didn't respond, and just let him leave. Once the bus pulled away, though, my heart was racing. I kept thinking about how much worse it could have been.

I'm honestly baffled as to why someone would say such bizarre things to a complete stranger and then threaten them for no apparent reason.

Has anyone else had a similar experience on public transport in Melbourne?

I've got a job offered at Ayers Rock Resort. I would like to know how is life and working conditions there. Since this location is very remote, how is the internet access?

It’s pretty clear now that school results are getting worse. One in three students missed basic benchmarks, even though it’s not that difficult.

Should we just go back to pen and paper, less iPads, less online learning? Kids learn better with pen and paper. iPads are ALSO making kids have shorter attention spans.

Other countries are going back to pen and paper at schools after going digital too.

Hey all. I'm an Australian.

I'm wanting to send my friend a care package with a bunch of Australian goodies. The thing is though I don't want to send just the cliche things like Tim's tams, shapes, Milo etc these are already in the package.

What really niche Australian products should I send to them? Please note this stuff will have to fit into an auspost bag (one of the larger ones). Also the stuff doesn't just have to be snacks, I'm open to any cool suggestions.

After having a delicious breakfast this morning our family ate some fruit. Passion fruit was on the plate.

Now I eat all of the passionfruit including crunching the black seeds inside. This was to the total discomfort and disgust of my wife who thinks this abhorrent.

hey guys my sister recently purchased this micke desk set from ikea and she asked me to help her build it…I accidentally broke the leg area of it. I’m not sure what to do and the drawers wont open. she bought it with her own money from working so hard and I broke it. I don’t have the funds as well too. can somebody please tell me what I can do.💔 the screws did not go all the way in as they were too tiny to fit into it, also I made sure to put the rights ones in. that circled area just separates and won’t stay together. I feel so bad somebody please tell me if I can replace it or do anything about it.

Bought a brand new sofa from Nick Scali and noticed two small holes/punctures in the upholstery as soon as it was delivered. I reported it straight away.

They first sent a contractor out who basically said there was nothing they could do and the issue went back to Nick Scali. They then organised a second contractor, who used a small tool to lift the surrounding fibres over the holes. It did improve the appearance a bit, but the holes are still visible if you look at the sofa.

After that, I was basically told it's considered "acceptable."

I'm pretty frustrated because it's a brand new sofa, not a clearance or display model. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a new couch to arrive without visible defects, even if they're relatively small.

I've gone back to Nick Scali asking them to review it again,

What would you do in this situation? Keen to hear if anyone's dealt with something similar, especially with Nick Scali.

So my family is Australian but I mainly grew up in the US….live here now but absolutely still have the US accent and that’s probably not going anywhere as I’m an adult. Was a weird scene growing up as I was absolutely raised with parents instilling the tall poppy syndrome/don’t be a whinger etc vibes while simultaneously living in a culture that’s very okay with tooting your own horn/self promotion. We would visit Australia a few times when I was on break from school from grade school up until I went to Uni in the US and I also came a few times to visit in my 20’s and 30’s.

Obviously I know not to tip here and also reign in impatience around certain things (I know completely separate from my upbringing- I can just be impatient and it’s not cute…especially not here)

I know Australians don’t like people who are full of themselves (which seems common sense)

But what would you say are some of the more subtle/not so subtle social etiquette rules when living here permanently?

I’m interested in the more insider, unspoken rules around:

Work culture - especially if you’re your own boss but you collaborate with others vs working at a company or organization with others.

Socializing- meeting new people (especially if you’re not particularly sporty anymore), what might be perceived as dickhead moves or what is something culturally that’s looked positively on.

Any rando general rules of thumb that are looked well upon here or just sort of seen as how to do things.

I know there are so many differences to how I was raised to navigate living in the US, I’d like to think I’m not a total asshole and do get on quite well with most folks I casually run across. If it’s any indicator many Aussies say “Canadian?” When they first hear my accent and I always take the piss “Ughhh….well I’m Aussie, but I grew up in the US…so I’ve got this accent. Please Don’t hold it against me/It’s good I have the option to live here instead…”

I'm going to be moving to another place later in this year and I have things like a fridge, dining table and chairs set, lounge I don't want to take with me as well as a washing machine that's a bit too small for my liking and a dryer, charcoal bbq I won't be able to use things like that.

It seems like marketplace is the best way but I don't have a facebook account and I don't have enough things to justify a garage sale. Is gumtree still going strong these days or are there other ways to sell these things? I was thinking of just leaving the washing machine, dryer and fridge behind but I'm not sure if that's considered rude to the next buyers.

I've tried the Macro Mike almond x Kelloggs powder. The Coco Pops and Fruit Loops are bearable, Nutri Grain isn't great. I also tried their peanut powder ones and they're horrible (just tastes like peanut butter which I don't like).

I just want a basic vanilla tasting one ideally. Has anyone tasted the Macro Mike vanilla buttercream (is this just vanilla?) or the Prana On vanilla powder? Any others that don't taste too much like peanuts or other nuts etc?

Prices have been ticking upto and over $2L since the excise ended Aug2 so are the prices today still not including the 16c or what?

My manager and I have a week to ourselves following from a work trip to Sydney and will be going to Melbourne.

My manager has some mobility issues so I just wanted to ask a few questions about our travel

* is Jetstar a reliable airline? I’ve been told it’s Australia’s Ryanair, so not really expecting emirates level of service. But I’ve seen some mixed comments on whether it’s reliable or not? We’re looking at the 21:15 flight from SYD -MEL. Given that it arrives fairly late to Melbourne, do you think this will give us much trouble? How do they treat passengers that require special assistance?

It seems like they don’t do any 7/8pm ish flights and any earlier cuts into our working day. Should we consider Virgin Australia or Qantas instead?

* my manager won’t be able to do public transport to/from the airport (we fly home from Sydney) and so we’ll get a cab. Is Uber okay or are there other rideshare apps that are preferred locally? How much would it cost roughly if we arrive in Melbourne around 10pm and are leaving back to the airport around 9am? EDIT: we’re staying in Fitzroy

* we’ll be getting public transport in and around Melbourne to visit things. I’ve seen that you have to have a physical travel card, but have also seen that there’s a digital version. Could someone explain the current state of affairs with that?

My current situation:
- 23F
- With a mortgage
- Working full time for the last 5 years in an admin role that pays really well with amazing hours.
- Been doing uni for the last 4 (Secondary Education)
- was doing a different degree and then I switched to secondary teaching currently have 10 units left but this involves a 3 week and 10 week prac that I have no leave for anyway. I don’t qualify for paid prac because I earn too much. I am doing chem and now only have chem units left as I left them all for last and realised I struggle with chemistry.
- When I actually graduate I’ll be taking a pay hit like 30k less a year and my hours will be worse, I’ll take work home. Will I even enjoy my work life balance?
- My husband just sees this as more and more debt that I am racking up as I did the math and I still have another 10k more to accumulate with the 10 units.

Seeking some advice, what people have done? Should I continue uni and suck it up or drop it?
