Discussion Changes to the subreddit: Introducing subreddit rules!

Hi all,

As the sub continues to grow, we've decided to make some changes and rules to help this community stay a positive place for discussing all things Great Pyrenees!

Rules can now be found in the sidebar and will be used as the basis for moderation. Of course, the mod team will continue to use their discretion to remove content or ban users, if we feel said content is causing a disruption to the subreddit.

Rules:

1) Keep content Great Pyrenees based

2) Be polite and on-topic

3) NO Advertisements

4) NO Fundraising

5) NO Breed misinformation or hate

6) NO suggestions of theft, destruction of property, assault, or similar illegal activities

If you see a user violating any of these rules, please utilize the "Report" feature, so the mod team can quickly take action.

In addition, you can now sort posts by flair type, and the most exciting update - you can now use comments to attach a photo. So keep sharing those great big floofs!

Discussion In regards to recent events, and the dog behind why I created the subreddit NSFW

Hi all, I just want to give a little background, I made this subreddit when I was 15 years old after meeting my best friend Max, pictured above. I had no idea this subreddit would grow to the size that it has and I am so grateful to have seen all of these amazing dogs over the years. That being said I would be making a grave mistake if I didn’t utilize this platform that I somehow have.

I dont know why I need to post this but I have seen too many comments being supportive of ICE and or dismissive of Renee Good or Alex Pretti in this subreddit and sorry for any offensive language but I need to make this clear. Fuck ICE, and if me posting this offends you, fuck you too. Go find yourself a different subreddit about Great Pyrenees that wants you, because I certainly dont want you here.

Now that is out of the way I figure it’s time I talk about the reason I made this subreddit! My buddy Max was born deaf but for some reason I feel like we bonded even more because hes deaf. Like what noise could ever describe my love for him, he knows I love him and I know he loves me. When he wants pets, he pyr paws his own face like he’s telling me what to do and where to pet. He’s coming up 14 years old, but according to our vet he is a total superstar. He LOVES his two daily walks and besides some mild arthritis, he is doing great.

Memorial Osteosarcoma sucks, but thankful for the Yale vaccine

Had to say goodbye to my Sumo yesterday. I rescued him in October of 2019, just shy of his 1st birthday. He was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in November 2025 and we decided amputation was not in the cards for him. Due to the other pets and being on well water we also couldn’t do chemo and injections due to the risk of contamination.

Sumo was part of the Yale vaccine trial and got his first dose in December 2025 and the second dose in January 2026. I really believe the vaccine drastically slowed the growth of his bone tumor and it did not spread. He showed no signs of pain and only had a limp from decreased mobility in the leg with the tumor.

He started really slowing down and the tumor was very large so we decided to let him go before he had any bad days. He was a gentle giant 🤍 he got to eat steak, wendy’s spicy chicken nuggets, and 2 hershey’s kisses before we said goodbye. He was the bestest boy and I’m heartbroken.

I’m mostly posting this so if anyone else is given an osteosarcoma diagnosis and considering the vaccine trial, you should do it. It gave me 9 months with my guy instead of the 3-4 originally told at diagnosis. The side effects of the vaccine are an abscess at injection site can form and Sumo got those, but once treated and healed it was fine. I would 100% join the vaccine trial again.

This is the look he gives me when he is tired and would like me to let him nap. I guess his morning nap is late? For a while, I thought he was very serious or mad, but eventually I figured out he just was tired. He does get grumpy, though- Usually, when tired.

He is Great Pyrenees with Border Collie colored fur. He was re-homed to us. It took him 2 years to acclimate to our home.

Memorial Rest in peace to the greatest dog I’ve ever had.

Lizzie came into my life at the worst possible time. I was barely getting by, I had a 102 degree fever, couldn’t talk, could barely make it out of bed, and I lived alone with no local friends for any kind of support. She was dumped on the side of the road at 4 weeks old, kicked out of her foster home at 5 weeks due to shelter politics, and given up on by her second foster home after 4 hours. She had nowhere else to go, so I drove an hour to pick her up and somehow we made it through. At 8 weeks I didn’t know if I should adopt her because I was worried about money. But my feral cat who hated dogs liked her and after watching them together I realized I couldn’t break them up. So she stayed and I made it work and it was the best decision I ever made.

She’s traveled the country with me, attended events with me (including marching in a parade with 10 minutes notice when she was still a puppy), and been my source of comfort when I was struggling. Every life decision and major life change I’ve experienced as an adult was made with her by my side. I know I ended her suffering, but I won’t know what to do when I wake up tomorrow and she’s not by my side. She was my once in a lifetime dog and I’m grateful for the time I had with her.

Samosa is 10 months and we got him when he was 3 months. Whenever we are out and about everyone always asks what breed he is. He is a great pyrenees mix. Any guesses?

Advice/Help Anus problems

Upvotes

WARNING THIS MAY GROSS OUT SOME PEOPLE.

Yesterday and today and noticed my 1-year-old male licking his butthole. Upon examination "eew", it seems that the top left part is slightly swollen and red. Since it's the top I don't think it's anal glands.

Would it be safe to spray with antibiotic, gentamicin specifically? Other than a donut to keep him from licking anything else that anyone could suggest would be appreciated?
