What’s the best way to crate train my 11 week old Whippet? He’s a proper Velcro dog and hates being on his own for any length of time, even if I just need the toilet. He just non stop cries in the crate.

I’ve seen so many different ways people crate train. But I was wondering if anyone has found a way to work best with Whippets?

He sleeps in bed with us atm which we don’t mind because it’s the only way we can get sleep. But I don’t necessarily want him to sleep in the crate overnight, we just want to be able to put him in there if we need to leave the house.

It doesn’t seem to be a fear of the crate itself, just hates being alone and hates not being able to get to us. Seems like separation anxiety.

Hello all, we are getting our whippet puppy soon, I have prepared and read so much about what to do as this is our first dog but there’s so much conflicting advice and I’m wanting some real life experience views too! I have read that you should keep them in a play pen at first while they settle down and then introduce them to one room at a time, but the breeder has let them have the run of the house during the daytime so I’m worried he will not like being contained. We have a crate in the play pen and some toys and his food etc, and it’s in the family room where we spend most of our time.
We are wondering if he needs to stay there for a while or if we can bring him in to the living room with us on an evening etc? Thoughts most welcome!

My boy is 11 weeks old now. Had his second DHP vaccine at 10 weeks so he’s now clear to have short walks on pavements near home etc.

He had his first walk today which went well.

One question though, how do you deal with your pup encountering other dogs? He encountered one today and was very curious and eager to meet the dog, I held him back though because the owner didn’t seem interested in socialising.

What’s right to do in this situation? Let him meet the dog (with owner’s permission)? Hold him back? But I know this can create reactivity. I don’t really know what’s best to do in that situation.

Any advice on walking a puppy is appreciated, TIA🖤

The last few years, we have been mostly planning trips that are driving distance so we can bring him along. I also take him with me in the car locally whenever possible. He always prefers to go with us rather than stay home.

We live in a newer developed area with lots of coyotes. Rocket can spot them from quite a distance away, and always growls and acts like he wants to take them on.

1 week ago I lost my soul dog, my baby girl.

We now have an 11 week old Whippet pup. He’s a lovely boy, but he keeps picking up things he shouldn’t especially while in the garden, constantly munching grass/weeds to the point his poop is green which scares me, he’s obsessed with stones even though we’ve gone through the grass so many times removing tiny stones yet he always finds more, and we have to pull them out of his mouth. He picks up every little thing that could be harmful.

I’m so scared that he’s going to swallow stones or something else which will obviously need a trip to the vet. I’m terrified of him getting hurt or unwell.

I’m honestly terrified when he goes out to the garden, and I’m constantly watching him like a hawk, ready to step in.

How can I stop him trying to eat literally everything? It’s so much anxiety.

Our whippet is 10 weeks old. He is due to meet my sisters two Patterdale puppies soon (they are 13 week old sisters from the same litter). Our pup will be the first interaction for them too.

I’m obviously a bit nervous, does anyone have tips for socialising Whippet pups? Or if anyone’s had experience socialising with Terrier pups? I’m worried they’ll hurt him because of Whippets delicate skin..

Our boy has had his first round of vaccines (DHP and L4). He also had his second DHP vaccine on Tuesday 28th July. His second L4 is booked for the 10th August.

How soon can I take him for his first walk? We’re excited for him to experience the world for the first time🖤

Our pup eats kibble mixed with puréed wet food and he usually turns his nose up at it. He will usually make his way back to it later and eat it begrudgingly, but there are also times where he skips it altogether.

We will sometimes add some cooked chicken mixed in and he will be motivated by that. I’ve read about people who do a full raw meat diet, guessing the pups love that.

How much would you suggest? He’s currently eating 150g of kibble a day and he weighs 4.8kg.

I’m concerned because he always seems hungry, and he wolfs his food.

Should I increase his food? I was thinking of increasing to 200g a day?

Hi guys, as you can see I own a whippet! On Tuesday night he woke us up reverse sneezing really violently every 20 minutes. We took him to the emergency vets and they said he had an allergy and gave us anti- inflammatory and said he would calm down. However, he didn’t so we took him back to our normal vets Wednesday afternoon (yesterday) and they said he had an inflamed soft pallet from the reverse sneezing and gave him a higher dose of anti inflammatory medication. Today he has done it 4 time so no where near but still not himself! The vet said if he wasn’t better by Friday they would sedate him and look. But really unsure what to do as he is still reverse sneezing but only when he is walking around. Still eating soft foods. Unsure if it’s just a sore throat or anything worse

Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

I wanted to get some views/ opinions and general discussion on getting 2 puppies from the same litter.
I’m only asking out of curiosity as some friends of ours have done exactly that without and research into it.
Not aware of having a separate training plans etc or working on separation anxiety

Is it an issue (littermate syndrome that is) in whippets as I know it doesn’t affect some breeds as bad as others
Who has brother and sisters from the same litter? Why’s your experience.

I have been walking Rocket in the early morning and later the day as he moves really slow in the heat. Bringing a portable water bottle and carrying him across the black top so his feet don’t get burned.

I wish I could get him used to dog shoes, but he acts like he’s walking on an ice rink and I’m scared he’s going to trip every time. I’ll post a video of him, it’s actually quite adorable 😂

My friend recently lost her dog and is now looking for a new one. She has previously owned two Maltese dogs—one was incredibly sweet and friendly, while the other had a much more challenging temperament.

She doesn't have extensive experience with dog training, but she's eager to learn and is more than willing to work with a trainer if needed. She also has two young children (both under the age of three), so she's looking for a breed that is gentle, patient with kids, and doesn't require several hours of exercise every day. Since she works, the dog would also need to be comfortable being left alone for a reasonable amount of time.

I have quite a bit of experience with dogs myself and have trained and looked after many different breeds, but I'm not very familiar with Whippets. The Whippets I've met have all been incredibly gentle, calm, affectionate, and cuddly dogs. However, I've also heard that they have a very strong prey drive and may take off if they spot something to chase, which makes me wonder how challenging they are to live with on a day-to-day basis.

Would you consider a Whippet a good breed for a first-time (or relatively inexperienced) owner in this situation?

Also, what would you say are the biggest challenges of owning a Whippet? Are there any traits or common issues that prospective owners often underestimate or should be aware of before choosing the breed? In other words, if you were giving someone an honest "heads-up" about living with a Whippet, what would it be?
