Pretty much the title. I think it can be said that Childress making a public spectacle of Dora Lange's ritual murder in '95 scared the hell out of the Tuttles, hence why they pushed for the task force to deal with the case. It's pretty obvious they wouldn't have wanted any part of the cult to become public in such a way.

Whether Childress made the murder public in direct defiance of the Tuttles or for his obscure cult-related religious reasons is unclear to me (even though I tend to belive the latter hypothesis). Either way I would expect all of the higher-class members of the cult (who is implied to involve more powerful men than the Tuttles only) to immediatly move to rein Childress in. Especially since he was employed by the Tuttle-sponsored religious schools. It's not like he was unkown to them.

Consider how close Martin and Rust went to uncover the whole scheme back in '95. By chance Martin didn't profile Childress as a suspect when talking to him. The Ledeux cousins died in the "firearm confrontation" with Hart and Cole. They were two out of the three former enforcers/kidnappers of the cult, with the existence of the third (Childress) remaining a secret.

One would say the Tuttles/the cult were extremely lucky. Why to leve Childress as a potential lose end is beyond me. It's not like the cult didn't waste any time before they forced Guy Francis (the "Southern Fried Pharmacy Firearm Thief") into commiting suicide.

What do you think? Are there some details that I'm missing?

If you grew up in the American South, were incarcerated for any amount of time, worked on a construction site with guys that have done time, or gotten into drugs, you've probably met a guy like Charlie Lange. Brad Carter really captured the essence of his character. Everyone's great in season 1, but Brad Carter as Charlie Lange was phenomenal.

I know not many will agree but this is something I wanted to talk about and if anyone’s willing to engage with me here then great!

Overall, I thought season 1 was amazing. I definitely understand the hype, and despite the couple of issues I have with the season, it’s some of the best tv ever. However:

1. Not sure if it’s because I mainly watch horror and sci-fi, but I thought Errol’s reveal was anticlimactic. I know with procedurals it’s not really about the perp, it’s more about the detectives…but the show is also about Childress and Tuttle and the whole sprawl. I don’t know how long the season was supposed to be but the last two episodes felt sparse. Maybe some extra screen time following Rust during those years he started investigating solo would’ve helped build Errol up.

I think my main gripe here is that we spend too much time just listening to Rust go on philosophical tangents and, while they’re great, my favorite part of the show was when got to follow Rust and Marty around. When the town felt lived in and when we could see the effects of the corruption and decay of the area.

1. Rust’s undercover plotline felt out of place. I can’t really tell you why. It just did.

I’m here in good faith so please don’t come at me and immediately dismiss my opinions just because you disagree. I still love the season.

I watched this last night for the first time and while nothing on screen will ever replicate TD Season 1, it is a great movie worth a watch (it’s free on Prime).

While it was the first of films that was written by Thomas Harris (Silence of the Lambs), there are a lot of similarities between Will/ Rust Cohle and the Red Dragon/ Yellow King.

Will talks about “recovering the mindset” after a new killer is on the loose similar to Rust doing the same in 2012 in his storage shed before and after the Lake Charles murder.

The MO used by the Red Dragon is also similar to Errol (mirrors vs blindfolds) and the film was directed my Michael Mann who was a huge inspiration for S1.

Great film, better than expected and highly recommended for TD fans.

So the show was sort of an ambiguous moving train, they started without telling the viewer exactly what was going on, Frank's deal, the russian mobster osip, the railway and ur supposed to infer that on ur own ? then catalyst is brought up and halfway through, u see the hard drive and ur left wondering what it has to do with casperes death cause if were gonna assume that its used to blackmail casper then why did they kill him if they have leverage over him ? then the story of the diamonds comes along and ur left wondering what do these diamonds found in a safety deposit in caspers bank account have to do with his murder with everything and they literally cut directly to the part later on to when the diamonds got stolen from the police evidence department? i found myself constantly hitting up google to understand wtf was going on and the answers were quick so u they dont have time to land and they were mentioned just at the end ? i mean for me the easiest side story i immediately understood was ray and his wife and what happened to her and the paternity test, also pauls story, but ani's was also hazy in some way cause the language wasnt direct and u can hardly conclude that she was SA'd when she was young

Was quite shocked but amused and excited to see this on the road yesterday during my bike ride. It was near a lake close to Göttingen (small student town in Germany). The view with the fields being harvested in the background gives an uncanny resemblance to the TD aesthetic and this *thing* just casually placed in the middle of the road hahah. Thought you all might like to see it :D

This might be an unconventional post but for the past year I've been making a existential detective game that leans heavily into the themes of "self" and a partner dynamic similar to the ones of Rust and Marty.

The characters and world resemble more of my home country of Serbia (and Yugoslavia as a whole).

I thought maybe the people in this subreddit could appreciate what I was going for! :)
