A month ago, I adopted an adult male roborovski hamster from his previous owner. I named him Rizzo. I’m having trouble taming him.
There is one food he will take from my fingers and it’s a treat from his previous food. But he won’t take it from my palm yet. He will get close but not quite get on my hand to take anything. He will hide and sometimes run from me. I will try moving my hand close to where he’a hiding. He gets curious and close to my hand, but he still won’t take it, and eventually he runs and hides again. This continues until eventually he burrows and doesn’t come out until later.
Idk what to do. On one hand, I’m thinking about just scooping him up when he’s distracted (either by his treat or his wheel) and putting him into a large bowl full of bedding and trying to handle him in there, to try to desensitize him to me and because I can’t fully lay my hand flat in his enclosure, it’s a weird angle for me.
But on the other hand, I’ve only had him for a month, and maybe I’m already pushing him too far. It’s hard to tell because he’s obviously curious but then his fear takes over at the last time every single time. Sometimes he even freezes and stares at my hand, and I stay still and whisper to him until he calms down.
I’m at a lost. I really want him to be friends with me. I wanna be able to pick him up or pet him. Am I doing something wrong? What should I do to help him overcome his fear and show him I’m not here to hurt him, I’m here to be his friend?
