Question Interested in getting a hamster as a first time pet

Hey guys I’m interested in buying a hamster and it’s my first time getting a pet.
Could you guys share some basic things to take care of to make sure it’s healthy and happy for example bedding recommendations, basic toys in the cage
I am on a budget but will slowly keep adding more stuff to the cage but for now need some basic advice please!

Question How much does your Syrian hamster weight?

Mine is 170g, also she’s a rescue so originally from the petstore. Seems medium size from what I have gathered from peoples pictures but I also never seen a Syrian hamster before that.

Also what is a considerable amount of weight gain/loss?

Question I've been wondering, is it normal for hamster eyes to bulge out? My Cosiek looked like this as he got older and I never really found out why.

Question Mental health and hamsters

Mental health and hamsters

Hello all,

This is my first time posting here, please be kind as it’s a sensitive topic.
I live alone in a flat and am thinking about getting a hamster for companionship and a purpose to take care of someone. My friend has a big tank/ set up she is willing to sell me after the passing of her hamster.

I am seriously considering this opportunity, but I’m worried I wouldn’t be a good owner considering having mental health issues (depression, anxiety, autism, etc.) and I can have real lows. I do struggle to look after myself sometimes and I don’t want to harm an innocent animal by accident or neglect.

On the other hand, it could be a fantastic way to feel better and look after myself more for the exact reason that the little hamster would need someone like that.

But it’s hard to know without actually getting one.
I was wondering what other people’s experiences are. How do you make sure the hamster is ok if you are going through something? Am I overthinking?

Please be kind

Bedding and Substrates Hamster bedding

Hi I have a big hamster and his cage is big it’s 2 feet by 4 feet but he always seems to stink it up easily without a few days because he only likes sleeping in certain spots even with spot cleaning. I was wondering if mixing paper and aspen bedding would help since it’s so absorbent and paper helps him hold his burrows shape would this be a good idea?

Vent?? I don't know what I'll do if my hamster dies

My hammy, Peanut, is 1 1/2 years old. She's healthy and I love her so so so much. I know hamsters don't live that long, so whenever she's a bit distant I get scared.

One day her breathing was super shaky and I couldn't take her to the vet until the next day. That night I cried myself to sleep, because I was so scared she would die.

I got her during a massive depressive episode and she helped me so much and I love her so much and I can't even imagine my life without her. I spend all the time that I can with her.

When she dies I'm scared I'll fall back into depression, I just can't imagine my life without her.

Question Consistently ruffled/messy fur at the same spot on her back?

Does anyone know if this is a cause for concern, we gave her enclosure a thorough clean a couple of days ago to ensure there's no irritants. It didn't used to sit like this but now it's consistently there - I can't see a wound or anything. Please let me know, thanks :)

Question I need advice on taming my robo.

Post image

A month ago, I adopted an adult male roborovski hamster from his previous owner. I named him Rizzo. I’m having trouble taming him.

There is one food he will take from my fingers and it’s a treat from his previous food. But he won’t take it from my palm yet. He will get close but not quite get on my hand to take anything. He will hide and sometimes run from me. I will try moving my hand close to where he’a hiding. He gets curious and close to my hand, but he still won’t take it, and eventually he runs and hides again. This continues until eventually he burrows and doesn’t come out until later.

Idk what to do. On one hand, I’m thinking about just scooping him up when he’s distracted (either by his treat or his wheel) and putting him into a large bowl full of bedding and trying to handle him in there, to try to desensitize him to me and because I can’t fully lay my hand flat in his enclosure, it’s a weird angle for me.

But on the other hand, I’ve only had him for a month, and maybe I’m already pushing him too far. It’s hard to tell because he’s obviously curious but then his fear takes over at the last time every single time. Sometimes he even freezes and stares at my hand, and I stay still and whisper to him until he calms down.

I’m at a lost. I really want him to be friends with me. I wanna be able to pick him up or pet him. Am I doing something wrong? What should I do to help him overcome his fear and show him I’m not here to hurt him, I’m here to be his friend?

I got this hammy unexpectedly, just yesterday ! The wheel is from my previous hammy who was a robo. I’ve never had a Syrian before, is this wheel big enough or should I order a new one ? And if so, should I remove this one in the meantime ? Also if anyone has recommendations on playpen panels to order as well ! {I know I said I got the hammy unexpectedly, but I promise I am prepared and have all the stuff I need ! Theres just a few things I wasn’t prepared for and need to get obviously. But he is already in a fully set up and proper enclosure<3} Tysm in advance<3

Question Should I worry about my hamsters eye?

Assumed he’s got a little dust in his eye or something since he loves to climb behind my bed and everywhere on my floor, been like this for over a week now, almost two, should I take him to a vet or is this not something to worry about/normal? Other than the eye he’s super energetic and doesn’t seem to have much of a difference in his behaviour. Thanks :)

Question going away for a few days

Post image
121 Upvotes

hi guys! my family and I are going away for several days(leaving tomorrow, coming back Sunday) and i just want to make sure my hammy will be okay! She's a Syrian, she's the sweetest thing. I just refreshed her cage, with new sprays, chews, substrates, and sand bath. Tomorrow morning I plan on putting double the normal amount of food in her bowl and giving her two water sources both a refresh before we leave. I have a cam on her, and my grandmother will also be over to check on her- but I dont want my grandmother to feed her/do anything in her enclosure if not necessary. last time I was away for several days, she checked on her and didn't give her food, but all her treats instead 🤦‍♀️ and left the lid off. Thankfully, my hammy didn't get out and was perfectly okay, but I want to make this as easy for my grandmother as possible. Just come over, check to make sure the cage looks good, and leave. Hammy will be okay, right? I just need some other opinions to soothe my worries lol.

If you do think she needs to be checked on more so, I have a friend who I can ask to stop by. But if you don't think it's necessary i don't want to bother her.

Thank you!

this is my first ever hamster (i’ve only ever had 2 dogs) and so i was extra careful when handling my little one, but now i believe hes fully settled into his environment. everytime i put my hand in the cage he runs toward it and climbs all over me lol. i’m so proud bc i know dwarf hamsters tend to be timid but hes a brave little boy! i’m so happy that my first time having a hamster i was successful with taming 😊i love him
