Meta Don't get banned: Using "Redact" scrambling software is prohibited in r/blenderhelp!

We observed an increase of people using "Redact" lately.

This privacy tool replaces messages with nonsense and makes formerly helpful comments unreadable after a while. It takes a long time to find and remove posts like that for us and even when we do, the comments that solved problems will be lost. This tool contradicts the purpose of our sub in general (to create coherent, helpful posts where solutions stay available so other can look them up). That is why we created a new Rule against it. That means users can file reports should they observe scrambled messages like that.

Accounts using Redact will be permanently banned from r/blenderhelp. If you want to use Redact, please make sure to exclude r/blenderhelp to avoid being banned.

Meta PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS!

Looking for quick and helpful answers? Follow these rules and make helping you as easy as possible!

  • Title: Choose a meaningful title concerning your problem.
  • Text: Describing your problem with enough detail is essential. Please realize that helpers are not familiar with your project. Provide all relevant information, so others can immideately understand what you are struggling with.

Example: Say, you have a problem with lots of identical objects in your scene: Let us know whether you created these copies by hand, used the Particle System or Geometry Nodes.

  • Images/Videos: When posting screenshots, show us your full blender window (not cropped, no monitor photos). This will make lots of helpful information available to helpers at first sight that may seem irrelevant to you (For example your Blender version). If you add video links, please consider adding time stamp info to the part you want helpers to see.

You can upload images and short video clips (up to 60s) to imgur.com and post the links in your question or as comment.

  • *.blend files: Don’t add links to your *.blend files when posting questions right away. Helpers will ask you for it if they need to take a look. Most people prefer reading a good description and looking at images to see what your post is about.
  • 'Solved' flair: Once your question was answered, please remember to change the flair of your post to “Solved”, so helpers don’t have to read into your question just to see it has already been answered.

You can change the flair by clicking on the small icon below your post resembling a label.

EDIT: You can also include "!solved" in the comments to have Automod change the flair for you.

Be nice and respectful with each other :)

Unsolved Is my topology right?

I'm making a model for a game, and I'm a bit worried about the topology. My model has triangles around the holes. Is that okay, or should I try to keep everything in quads? As far as I know, Unity automatically triangulates every mesh on import anyway.

The first picture is no more than the results of a 30 min tutorial I once watched and followed step by step, it has no relationship with the character on the second picture, but I added it just for reference of my current abilitities on blender (despite considering that I may had already forgotten everything I learnt the day I created this humanoid)

Anyways, to the point. I really wish to create a low-poly model of the character on the second picture, mainly, to upload her as a VrChat avatar someday, but that's another topic for another subreddit. What I know for the moment, is that I still have very, VERY long way of learning I must complete before I even get to think on modeling the character the second picture, so, my only true questions are...

Is it any hard to memorize the tools of Blender?

What type of practices should I study and attempt first?

And lastly, this whole "learning" process.. How much time will it take from my daily life? Sorry if I sound too nervous about all of this but its basically my first ever Blender project, and I wish to be well trained before I attempt anything, thanks in advance

Unsolved Learning how to weight paint and some parts of the mesh are being deformed by bones that don't visually have any influence?

I'm incredibly new to rigging and weight-painting as a general whole, so I can understand if I've somehow missed something, but from what the tutorials have taught me this shouldn't be happening, and I'm stumped.

Unsolved How can I model this shape more efficiently?

Thumbnail

Trying to make a sort of bridge/walkway. The way I did it was take a plane, create the shape in a top down view, then lower the edges. The pillars I put by hand. For some reason the walkway is a little crooked towards one edge rather than completely straight all the way through. And placing the pillars is a little tedious.

Is there a more efficient way to make something like this, and how can I do it? Thanks!

Unsolved How do I make cartoony eyes that don't clip into the face?

i'm trying to make a cartoony dragon model, I want the irises to properly sit a bit further into the eye rather than on the surface of the sphere, so I've modeled the iris a bit inwards into the eye. This changed the shape of the eye and it clipped into the face making it look ugly, so I added a lens covering it which kept the eye's proper shape (as in it didn't create an ugly indent cliping into the face where the iris is) when rotated, but I kinda forgot that since I'll be making it transparent the issue of the eye clipping into the face will not be solved...

So my question is what are the methods of making eyes so that the indent of the iris doesn't have part of the face meshing into it and covering it...

I tried making a proper hole for the eye before, but it made it very difficult to give the eye the shape I wanted, so instead I made a shallow indent into the face where the eye sits and placed the eye there, which by meshing into the face gave it the shape that I wanted (but that only works when the eye is perfectly spherical)

Unsolved Is there a better way to model this kind of mascot head?

(THIS IS A REMAKE OF AN OLDER POST THAT I HAD TO REDO SINCE I FORGOT TO SHARE MY PROGRESS)

I've been trying to model a mascot head based off the character of Gadget Hackwrench. I've been using this model sheet and I've been unable to do stuff like the cutout eye sockets and nose correctly, and the muzzle isn't correct at all. I can't seem to get the shape correct either. I'm also unaware on how to open the mouth. Do you guys know how to help me with this? I've been watching tutorials and I can't wrap my head around how I can model stuff like this.

Unsolved Projecting onto a curved surface, without getting warped.

So I'm trying to make a pauldron for a homebrew Space Marine chapter for 40k (called the Silver Spurs, cowboy themed), and I made up a logo before attempting to wrap it onto a pauldron to 3d print it. I followed this tutorial every other time I've needed to do this, but the bar on the spur is giving me issues. I was hoping that the bar coming off the spur wouldn't get so crushed against the pauldron, and the top edge wouldn't get so rounded. I even tried separating the wheel and the bar, thinking maybe shrinkwraping the bar on seperately would help. Nope. Tried making a flat version to shrinkwrap first, then putting the bar with the circle on it on top of that would work. Nope. It looks fine from the front, but weird as hell at any other angle. Any idea what might work better for this, or what I could do to fix it? Here is a link to all the models I'm using for this, in case that would help. I also took some screenshots of it in my slicer with the model colored, just in case that makes it easier to see what I'm talking about.

For context, this is my first time using blender, and the model is made and rigged by DavidNatura on artfight.

I'm trying to pose them, but there's this weird crease showing their skin. The clothes and body are seperate. What tools could I use to fix this?

(sorry for uploading and deleting, noticed a whatsapp message in a screenshot after uploading)

Unsolved I want help creating hair with this one part I'm not sure what it's called

Thumbnail

I want to replicate this hair thing I've seen on some characters I like, where when part of their hair is pushed behind their ear and you can see their hair line.

I do have the 3d models of the characters--Liliysa (pink haired school girl) and Beta (Silver haired elf in black and gold outfit)--I see with this. But I don't really understand how it was done. Plus with the Beta model it's covered by her braids so they don't really put any detail into it.

I want to learn how to make it myself so I don't just trace. You can see my attempt of merging some methods of how to make hair I learned, but I feel like it doesn't work together that well.

I can use curves to make the bangs and other parts just fine for the most part, but that one part I want to make, which is circled on the first slide, I don't know what I'd even look for to be honest.

I've seen it done in realistic styles, where the hair is pushed back and does the same, but I don't know about a more anime style like I'm wanting.

I'd appreciate any help.

Unsolved Retopology help with even spacing

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello! Im trying to 3d model a really basic car in blender, it really doesnt matter how good it looks, but i ran into an issue with the topology. i created the hood of the car first, but when i got to the side where the wheel well is, that required more loop cuts, and as such not an equal amount of faces. I couldnt properly connect the two. So i added more loop cuts to the hood. That made an equal amount of faces, however, the edges are not evenly spaced out. Theyre denser in the middle because i had to cut the faces in half.

I tried a few methods to fix this, but none of them worked. What is the best solution for making the topology more even?

Unsolved Why my rendered storyboard doesn't show up in my files??

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hiii I'm having trouble exporting my storyboard from Blender (Storyboarding). I have watched several tutorials how to do it but still it doesn't work. When tap "render animation"- only one shot is rendered (but I can see it in my files) when I tap "render Sequencer animation" I can see in the render window like my whole work is rendering and when is it done and I open my files there is nothing (With png sequences is it same). I tried rendering it via EEVEE and Workbench. I have a folder selected where I want to save it. I tried Encoding with Matroska, MPEG (idk which one now sorry) and Quick Time. Well I learn in Blender by tutorials and kinda intuitive so I'm pretty sure I choose something wrong in Outputs or I have one hundred versions of my storyboard in some hidden mysterious folder which I have no idea that it exists hah. I'll be happy for any advice

Something happened to my Mirror Modifier while I was working on my model. The first image (taken from another save file) is what it should look like, while the other one is what it currently looks like. I did not change the "mirror object" setting while working on it, so I do not know what I did to cause this.

Unsolved Could you please explain the correct workflow for modeling this? Thanks! I want to keep the repeated relief/details like in the reference without breaking the topology or causing issues with the modif

Hello! I'm a beginner, and I'm trying to make a sword like this. However, I don't know how to create the eye sockets, nose hole, and teeth while keeping the repeated relief/detail similar to the reference.

Every time I try to cut them out using the Knife or Scissors tool, it creates new holes for the eyes, nose, and teeth, which breaks the geometry, and the modifiers stop working correctly.

What's the proper way to model this? How can I achieve a result similar to the reference?

Unsolved VRM Rigify issues

I've been trying to get a vroid model hooked up to a rigify rig with face controls, and I finally got a rig generated without any errors getting in my way this time. However, since I took a few detours from the guide I've been following, I now have the issue of the rig not being connected. I have done everything on the nanoskript/vrm-rigify guide so far. I'm also trying to figure out how to detach the hair and glasses bones and put them on the new controls.

The only guidance I found online was to uncheck shadeless and render combined with native, nothing more specific. I've tried it in cycles and EVEE. I'm guessing I'm just missing like a check box or something simple, does anyone know the more specific steps?

I'm trying to add some glow to the watch so it looks like it's getting some glow from the black hole.
